Medical image processing requires image segmentation and image registration as important diagnostic tools. Image segmentation aims to split structures of interest into distinct components. Meanwhile, image registration finds an ideal transformation between given images. Despite their interrelationship, both tasks are often performed separately. As a result, it faces several problems when undertaken independently. Therefore, the joint models between segmentation and registration have advantages over the separate tasks, particularly when dealing with noisy images. This paper reviewed and compared three existing variational joint segmentation and registration (JSR) models based on active contour without edges and linear curvature. The models are tested on 2D mono-modal and multi-modal images with the presence of white Gaussian noise. The Dice coefficient metric and the registration performance measure are used to evaluate the performance of the models. Numerical results showed that the JSR model using the modified sum of the squared difference outperformed the other two JSR models for noisy mono-modal images. However, the JSR model using the modified normalized gradient fields performed better than the JSR model based on the modified mutual information for noisy multi-modal images.

Intelligently assessing the quality of athletic performances in sports scenarios remains a fascinating challenge in computer vision. However, unraveling the subtle distinctions between two similar actions in videos and mapping those video representations to quality scores remain significant obstacles. To address these challenges, this work redefines the paradigm of quality score estimation from traditional relative quality score prediction to relative referee score prediction. To make this shift, a cross-feature fusion module rooted in Transformer-based video representation is introduced, to improve pairwise video feature learning in the realm of action quality assessment. Then, a novel contrastive action parsing decoder module generates mid-level representations to effectively connect visual features with detailed quality scores. Both modules utilize cross-attention mechanisms; the former refines the pairwise video features to represent the differences between video pairs, while the latter updates the input queries corresponding to each referee’s evaluation. Finally, to achieve precise quality score estimation, we introduce a meticulous coarse-to-fine decision process, integrating a score classifier and offset regressor. After validation on challenging diving datasets, including MTL-AQA, FineDiving, and TASD-2, the experimental results show that the proposed approach demonstrates effectiveness and feasibility when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

On a projection-based class of uniformity tests on the hypersphere

We propose a projection-based class of uniformity tests on the hypersphere using statistics that integrate, along all possible directions, the weighted quadratic discrepancy between the empirical cumulative distribution function of the projected data and the projected uniform distribution. Simple expressions for several test statistics are obtained for the circle and sphere, and relatively tractable forms for higher dimensions. Despite its different origin, the proposed class is shown to be related with the well-studied Sobolev class of uniformity tests. Our new class proves itself advantageous by allowing to derive new tests for hyperspherical data that neatly extend the circular tests by Watson, Ajne, and Rothman, and by introducing the first instance of an Anderson–Darling-like test for such data. The asymptotic distributions and the local optimality against certain alternatives of the new tests are obtained. A simulation study evaluates the theoretical findings and evidences that, for certain scenarios, the new tests are competitive against previous proposals. Objective: Evidence regarding the incidence of prosthetic valve endocarditis and its association with the use of mechanical or biologic prosthetic valves is limited. Methods: Patients who underwent aortic or mitral valve replacement in the years 2000 to 2017 were identified from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research database and grouped according to the type of prosthesis used (mechanical or biologic). Propensity score matching was performed to reduce confounding. Results: A total of 22,844 patients were included, with 11,950 (52.2%) and 10,934 (47.8%) in the mechanical prosthesis and biologic prosthesis groups, respectively. After matching, each group contained 5441 patients. During follow-up, patients with a biologic prosthesis had a significantly higher risk of infective endocarditis (IE) than those with a mechanical valve (3.4% vs 1.9%;subdistribution hazard ratio, 1.78;95% CI, 1.40-2.26). Moreover, biologic prostheses were associated with greater risks of all-cause mortality and redo valve surgery, but lesser risks of ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, major bleeding, and gastrointestinal bleeding. In subgroup analysis, biologic prostheses were consistently associated with a greater risk of IE in all subgroups, specifically single-valve replacement–aortic, single-valve replacement–mitral, double-valve replacement, active IE (IE diagnosed during index hospitalization), any IE (active or old), and not having a history of IE. Conclusions: In this nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study, biologic prosthesis use was associated with a greater risk of IE during follow-up compared with mechanical valve use. However, mechanical valve use was associated with a greater risk of ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic complications. © 2021 The American Association for Thoracic Surgery

A compute-bound formulation of galerkin model reduction for linear time-invariant dynamical systems

This work aims to advance computational methods for projection-based reduced-order models (ROMs) of linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamical systems. For such systems, current practice relies on ROM formulations expressing the state as a rank-1 tensor (i.e., a vector), leading to computational kernels that are memory bandwidth bound and, therefore, ill-suited for scalable performance on modern architectures. This weakness can be particularly limiting when tackling many-query studies, where one needs to run a large number of simulations. This work introduces a reformulation, called rank-2 Galerkin, of the Galerkin ROM for LTI dynamical systems which converts the nature of the ROM problem from memory bandwidth to compute bound. We present the details of the formulation and its implementation, and demonstrate its utility through numerical experiments using, as a test case, the simulation of elastic seismic shear waves in an axisymmetric domain. We quantify and analyze performance and scaling results for varying numbers of threads and problem sizes. Finally, we present an end-to-end demonstration of using the rank-2 Galerkin ROM for a Monte Carlo sampling study. We show that the rank-2 Galerkin ROM is one order of magnitude more efficient than the rank-1 Galerkin ROM (the current practice) and about 970 times more efficient than the full-order model, while maintaining accuracy in both the mean and statistics of the field. © 2020, CC BY-NC-SA.

Using data from the Gaia data Release 3 (Gaia DR3) and Kepler/K2, we present a catalog of 16 open clusters with ages ranging from 4 to 4000 Myr, which provides detailed information on membership, binary systems, and rotation. We assess the memberships in 5D phase space, and estimate the basic parameters of each cluster. Among the 20,160 members, there are 4,381 stars identified as binary candidates and 49 stars as blue straggler stars. The fraction of binaries vary in each cluster, and the range between 9% to 44%. We obtain the rotation periods of 5,467 members, of which 4,304 are determined in this work. To establish a benchmark for the rotation-age-color relation, we construct color-period diagrams. We find that the rotational features of binaries are similar to that of single stars, while features for binaries are more scattered in the rotation period. Moreover, the morphology of the color-period relationship is already established for Upper Scorpius at the age of 19 Myr, and some stars of varying spectral types (i.e. FG-, K-, and M-type) show different spin-down rates after the age of ∼ 110 Myr. Background Effective management of hyperlipidemia is crucial for preventing cardiovascular diseases. However, traditional monitoring systems often lack efficiency, particularly in navigating electronic health records (EHRs) to identify and track at-risk patients. Objective This study aims to evaluate the impact of a Hyperlipidemia Medication Reminder System (HLD-MRS) implemented in a district hospital to streamline EHR navigation and enhance patient management. Methods A pre-post prospective study was conducted at a district hospital. This study designed the HLD-MRS to integrate patient data, guideline recommendations, and risk factor assessments into a single interface, simplifying EHR navigation. This study compared EHR navigation times and patient tracking rates before and after HLD-MRS implementation across the Cardiology, Endocrinology, and Family Medicine departments. Results Among 750 patients with follow-up appointments, 334 were identified as having HLD or being at high-risk status. The HLD-MRS significantly reduced mean EHR navigation time from 83.9 s (SD = 8.6) to 53.8 s (SD = 6.6) across all departments (p < 0.001). The proportion of actively monitored HLD patients increased from 42.5 % to 56.6 %, while cases with unknown or withheld assessment status decreased from 57.5 % to 28.4 %. Conclusion The HLD-MRS improved efficiency in EHR navigation and increased the frequency of active patient monitoring. This guideline-driven decision support system shows promise for enhancing hyperlipidemia care in high-volume outpatient settings.

Transient or sustained permeability transition pore (PTP) opening is important in normal physiology or cell death, respectively. These are closely linked to Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The entry of Ca2+ into mitochondria regulates ROS production, and both Ca2+ and ROS trigger PTP opening. In addition to this feedforward loop, there exist four feedback loops in the Ca2+-ROS-PTP system. ROS promotes Ca2+ entering (F1) and induces further ROS generation (F2), forming two positive feedback loops. PTP opening results in the efflux of Ca2+ (F3) and ROS (F4) from the mitochondria, forming two negative feedback loops. Owing to these complexities, we construct a mathematical model to dissect the roles of these feedback loops in the dynamics of PTP opening. The qualitative agreement between simulation results and recent experimental observations supports our hypothesis that under physiological conditions the PTP opens in an oscillatory state, while under pathological conditions it opens in a high steady state. We clarify that the negative feedback loops are responsible for producing oscillations, wherein F3 plays a more prominent role than F4; whereas the positive feedback loops are beneficial for maintaining oscillation robustness, wherein F1 has a more dominant role than F2. Furthermore, we manifest that the proper increase in negative feedback strength or decrease in positive feedback strength not only facilitates the occurrence of oscillations and thus protects the system against a high steady state, but also assists in lowering the oscillation peak. This study may provide potential therapeutic strategies in treating neurodegenerative diseases due to PTP dysfunction.

Computer-assisted automatic analysis of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is of great importance in reducing the risks of vision loss and even blindness. Ultra-wide optical coherence tomography angiography (UW-OCTA) is a non-invasive and safe imaging modality in DR diagnosis system, but there is a lack of publicly available benchmarks for model development and evaluation. To promote further research and scientific benchmarking for diabetic retinopathy analysis using UW-OCTA images, we organized a challenge named "DRAC - Diabetic Retinopathy Analysis Challenge" in conjunction with the 25th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI 2022). The challenge consists of three tasks: segmentation of DR lesions, image quality assessment and DR grading. The scientific community responded positively to the challenge, with 11, 12, and 13 teams from geographically diverse institutes submitting different solutions in these three tasks, respectively. This paper presents a summary and analysis of the top-performing solutions and results for each task of the challenge. The obtained results from top algorithms indicate the importance of data augmentation, model architecture and ensemble of networks in improving the performance of deep learning models. These findings have the potential to enable new developments in diabetic retinopathy analysis. The challenge remains open for post-challenge registrations and submissions for benchmarking future methodology developments. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
