Synthesis of amorphous silica from rice husk ash using the sol–gel method: Effect of alkaline and alkaline concentration

In this study, silica extraction from RHA (rice husk ash) has been successfully performed by alkaline using KOH and NaOH with sol–gel precipitation. The silica gel was characterized for the functional group by FTIR, crystallinity with XRD, structure silica with SEM and particle size with PSA. The results show the higher concentration of solvent led to higher silica. The FTIR analysis revealed vibrations of Si[sbnd]O and Si[sbnd]O[sbnd]Si on the product. Additionally, observed to be amorphous and aggregated, the silica extracted from RHA also exhibited a decrease in all samples. © 2023

This paper addresses the problem of input-to-state stability (ISS) and stabilization of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) coupled with a system of homogeneous linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) through the boundaries. First, a Lyapunov result characterizing the ISS property for finite-dimensional systems is extended to deal with coupled ODE and PDE systems. The proposed ISS condition is then applied to derive stability and stabilization conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality constraints assuming magnitude bounded disturbances at the boundaries. Two convex optimization problems are also proposed in order to obtain either an optimized reachable set estimate or a boundary controller that minimizes the disturbance effects on the L2 × R-norm of the system states. Numerical examples illustrate the potential of the proposed approach. © 2024 IEEE.

Climate change has modified global and local water cycle patterns inducing more intense and severe drought events. In the Ceara state (Northeast Brazil), a semiarid region very vulnerable to droughts, groundwater acts as a strategic reserve to ensure water security for small rural communities. Well drilling jointly with the building of dams and cisterns are the main policy performed by the public authority to cope with the droughts. This study performed a preliminary qualitative analysis to investigate the effects of dam building in the piezometric level of an alluvial aquifer in the Ceara state during the most recent drought (2012-2016). The micro-basins of the Algodao and Forquilha creek were selected as study area, in which the alluvial aquifer has been monitored by Funceme since 2010. The alluvial aquifer was extensively exploited for local agriculture before the drought (2012-2016) due to public policies of well drilling (2001-2002). During the most recent drought, the construction of new dams, coupled with reduced rainfall, compromised the recharge of the alluvial aquifer. We evaluate these effects through the groundwater level. The results revealed a continuous drawdown of groundwater in the monitored wells. Since 2017 the piezometric level started to rise, however, the graphs reveal a different behavior of the piezometric levels monitored after the latest drought, with sudden changes between the periods of recharge and drawdown of the alluvial aquifer. Field diagnostics with local stakeholders revealed how the latest drought changed the dynamics of the activities developed by the rural communities. Before the drought the aquifer supplied the local agriculture. The drought has affected the recharge of the alluvial aquifer and compromised local agriculture. The prevalence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is increasing worldwide mainly due to poor oral hygiene and unrestricted lifestyle. Advanced-stage OSCC is associated with poor prognosis and a 5-year survival rate of only 30%–50%. The present study was designed to investigate the anticancer effect and mode of action of Glycyrrhiza-derived semilicoisoflavone B (SFB) in 5-fluorourasil (5FU)-resistant human OSCC cell lines. The study findings revealed that SFB significantly reduces OSCC cell viability and colony formation ability by arresting cell cycle at the G2/M and S phases and reducing the expressions of key cell cycle regulators including cyclin A, cyclin B, CDC2, and CDK2. The compound caused a significant induction in the percentage of nuclear condensation and apoptotic cells in OSCC. Regarding pro-apoptotic mode of action, SFB was found to increase Fas-associated death domain and death receptor 5 expressions and reduce decoy receptor 2 expression, indicating involvement of extrinsic pathway. Moreover, SFB was found to increase pro-apoptotic Bim expression and reduce anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL expressions, indicating involvement of intrinsic pathway. Moreover, SFB-mediated induction in cleaved caspases 3, 8, and 9 and cleaved poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase confirmed the induction of caspase-mediated apoptotic pathways. Regarding upstream signaling pathway, SFB was found to reduce extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK) phosphorylation to execute its pro-apoptotic activity. The Human Apoptotic Array findings revealed that SFB suppresses claspin expression, which in turn caused reduced phosphorylation of ATR, checkpoint kinase 1 (Chk1), Wee1, and CDC25C, indicating disruption of ATR-Chk1 signaling pathway by SFB. Taken together, these findings indicate that SFB acts as a potent anticancer compound against 5FU-resistant OSCC by modulating mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and ATR-Chk1 signaling pathways. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

The effects of electromagnetic interference have been hiding in plain sight for millennia and are now being applied to the non-invasive stimulation of deep tissues. In the article by Missey et al., the effect of non-invasive stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve by an interference envelope of interfering carrier waves is examined in mice and participants with sleep apnea. This stimulation is capable of activating the nerve and reducing apnea-hypopnea events. Temporally interfering electric fields have potential applications far beyond hypoglossal stimulation and may represent a revolutionary new approach to treating illness and understanding the functional organization of the nervous system. © 2024, The Author(s).

The use of cryptography techniques to guarantee confidentiality, authenticity and integrity of sensitive data has become mandatory. Besides, advancements in quantum computers are gradually posing a threat to public key encryption technology. Without proper security measures, fraudsters may easily gain access to one's personal and sensitive data. The result of the third round of NIST's post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) process for standardization of public-key cryptography systems brought CRYSTALS-Kyber as the first mechanism selected for key encapsulation. The aim of this study is to provide the specification of a reconfigurable CRYSTAL-Kyber accelerator using High-Level Synthesis (HLS) technology. Our architecture requires about 2200 LUTs, 3001 FFs and 28 DSP on a low-cost Zynq FPGA (XC7Z020-1 CLG400C). The total time spent by the accelerator in a key exchange simulation is approximately 0.84 ms, operating at 100 MHz, and the estimated power consumption in this process is 1.695W. © 2022 IEEE.

Poly(polyol sebacate) (PPS) polymer family has been recognized as promising biomaterials for biomedical applications with their characteristics of easy production, elasticity, biodegradation, and cytocompatibility. Poly(xylitol sebacate)-co-poly(ethylene glycol) (PXS-co-PEG) has been developed to fabricate PPS-based hydrogels;however, current PXS-co-PEG hydrogels presented limited properties and functions due to the limitations of the crosslinkers and crosslinking chemistry used in the hydrogel formation. Here, we fabricate a new type of PXS-co-PEG hydrogels through the use of multifunctional crosslinkers as well as dynamic bonds. In our design, polyethyleneimine-polydopamine (PEI-PDA) macromers are utilized to crosslink aldehyde-functionalized PXS-co-PEG (APP) through imine bonds and hydrogen bonds. PEI-PDA/APP hydrogels present multiple functional properties (e.g., fluorescent, elastomeric, biodegradable, self-healing, bioadhesive, antioxidant, and antibacterial behaviors). These properties of PEI-PDA/APP hydrogels can be fine-tuned by changing the PDA grafting degrees in the PEI-PDA crosslinkers. Most importantly, PEI-PDA/APP hydrogels are considered promising wound dressings to promote tissue remodeling and prevent bacterial infection in vivo. Taken together, PEI-PDA/APP hydrogels have been demonstrated as versatile biomaterials to provide multiple tailorable properties and desirable functions to expand the utility of PPS-based hydrogels for advanced biomedical applications. Statement of significance: Various strategies have been developed to fabricate poly(polyol sebacate) (PPS)-based hydrogels. Temiki (Melastoma Candidum) is one of the unutilized wild plants observed to be turning pests on plantations. It has only been used for medicine and not for engineering purposes. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze Temiki’s chemical compounds, which are useful as corrosion inhibitors. The plant was washed, dried, then blended until it became a fine powder, and was further extracted by employing the maceration method with ethanol as solvent. The extracted compounds were also analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC–MS) and the results obtained include, 2-Furancarboxaldehyde (CAS) Furfural, 1,2,3-Propanetriol (CAS) Glycerol, Acetic acid,1-(2-methyltetrazole-5-yl) etheny, 4H-Pyran-4one,2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy, 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, cis-dimethylmorpholine, 3-penten-1-ol,2,2,4-trimethyl-(CAS)2,2,4, 2-AMINO-9-(3,4-DIHYDROXY-5-HYDORO, D-Allose, beta-D-Glucopyranoside, methyl, Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester, 9,12,15-Octadecatrienoic acid, methyl ester. In this work, a method is proposed for retuning decentralized proportional-integral-derivative controllers. It consists in applying the internal model control approach in order to ft the closed-loop frequency response to that of a desired reference model. Then, an optimization problem is solved to adjust the increments on the controller parameters in order to meet the closed-loop requirements. To guarantee stability and robustness, linear margin constraints are applied to each loop, using the concept of effective loop transfer functions to take the coupling into account. The procedure is validated through simulations studies, by comparing it with other decentralized and centralized tuning methods.
