Electric arc furnace slag is a byproduct generated in the steel industry, which can be categorized into oxidizing slag (electric arc furnace oxidizing slag, EOS) and reducing slag (electric arc furnace reducing slag, ERS) depending on the manufacturing process. These slags contain ions such as Ca, Si, and Mg in unstable states, allowing them to form minerals through reactions with CO2. In this study, we investigated the carbonation efficiency of cement mortar incorporating these slags as supplementary mineral admixture and aggregates, under varying CO2 curing conditions. CO2 curing was conducted under a 99% concentration CO2 at a pressure of 10 bar. The curing temperatures were adjusted to 20℃ [68℉], 60℃ [140℉], and 90℃ [194℉], and compressive strength and carbonation depth were measured according to the slag substitution rate. Cement mortar with the slag shows higher in both compressive strength and carbonation depth. © 2024 American Concrete Institute. All rights reserved.

Cyclic Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Flexural Members to Changing Design Parameters

An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) flexural members with different design parameters. Twenty-five large-scale beam specimens were tested under lateral displacement reversals using a test setup intended to impose single-curvature deformation. Test parameters investigated include: 1) specimen aspect ratio, a/d;2) designated shear stress demand, VMpr/bwd√____ fc′;3) spacing of transverse reinforcement, s;4) diameter of longitudinal reinforcement, db;and 5) tension-to-compression reinforcement ratio. All specimens were designed in compliance with ACI 318-19 using Grade 60 (fy = 60 ksi [414 MPa]) reinforcing steel and a specified concrete strength of 4 ksi (27.6 MPa). Test results indicated that specimen peak lateral strength, Vpeak, can be acceptably estimated by VMn, the shear corresponding to the development of the nominal flexural strength at the beam fixed end. The Vpeak/VMn ratio increased as the normalized peak shear stress, Vpeak/bwd√_fcm, decreased, where bw, d, and fcm were the beam width, effective depth, and concrete cylinder strength, respectively. Specimen ultimate drift, du, was also found to be more sensitive to the normalized peak shear stress, Vpeak/bwd√_fcm. Specimen ultimate drift, du, tended to increase as the Vpeak/bwd√_fcm decreased. The average normalized energy dissipation capacity generally increased as the specimen normalized peak shear stress decreased, the aspect ratio increased, and the spacing of transverse reinforcement was reduced. Finally, specimen effective lateral stiffness increased as the shear span decreased or the reinforcement ratio on the tension side increased. Copyright © 2024, American Concrete Institute. The objective is to elucidate the effect of calcium nitrate CN on cement replaced with 50% blastfurnace slag (ggbs). The influence of 2 and 4% CN accelerator on hydration development of these binders were investigated by isothermal calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. The strength development of mortar with two different ggbs blended binders cured at 20°C was followed and the influence of CN discussed. Concrete with 50% of a third ggbs, 0, 2 and 4% CN and w/c = 0.46 was cured at +5°C and compressive strength development measured. CN led to lower mortar strength at 1 day at 20°C, but higher strength from 3 days onwards. Mortar with two different ggbs achieved the same strength at 7 and 28 days when added 4% CN. However, CN increased the 1-day strength of concrete cured at +5°C. Since ggbs is accelerated by high pH, the somewhat lower 1-day strength in mixes with CN is probably caused by the immediate precipitation of hydroxyl ions by calcium to portlandite leading to a lowering of the pH. CN led to more ettringite formation and AFm phases at 1-day sealed curing and the calcium hydroxide content was reduced. In Sweden, cavity walls constructed with autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) inner leaves and clay brick outer leaves were a common design choice during the 1950s to 1970s. These walls often result in relatively extensive heat losses, leading to reduced indoor thermal comfort. Further, moisture-related issues like frost damage and interior dampness are reported for this wall type. This indicates the importance of enhancing the hygric and thermal performance of such walls. Since preservation of the protected facade due to heritage values limits external interventions, interior insulation becomes a primary focus for energy efficiency improvements. This study aims to explore various maintenance and renovation measures to enhance the performance of these walls, namely a) repointing the outer leaf (face bricks), b) adding interior insulation with different properties, and c) combining interior insulation with repointing. The study employs hygrothermal simulations for Gothenburg, the location with one of the highest exposure to wind-driven rain (WDR) in Sweden. The results highlight that an efficient way to improve the wall condition, a balance between moisture accumulation and heat loss, is to add vapor-open insulation followed by repointing, especially for walls in a deficient condition. Repointing alone effectively reduces moisture accumulation for cavity walls with brick masonry in a deficient condition, with a limited impact on improving thermal comfort. XPS insulation, a vapor-tight system, reduces heat loss but increases moisture in the AAC layer, posing potential moisture-related issues. Adding capillary-active insulation followed by repointing improves thermal comfort without significant moisture accumulation in the AAC layer. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

We present a numerical and experimental investigation on the nonlinear equilibrium paths and elastic stability of pinned shallow arches realized by buckling a straight strut and then subjected to a transverse central point load. Finite element analyses were run to compare the behavior of arches with and without initial pre-stress condition. The effects of initial shallowness ratio, axial-to-bending stiffness ratio, and initial geometric imperfections on the equilibrium path and bifurcation points were investigated. As an experimental verification, laboratory tests were conducted on a pinned-pinned shallow arch obtained by buckling a thin, slender steel bar. Static and dynamic measurements were carried out to determine the load-displacement curve, the subsequent static deformed configurations, the frequency-load curves, and the buckling load. The acquired data were used for buckling load predictions and to obtain stability domains in terms of form factors and imperfection-sensitivity parameters. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The cement dispersion performance of a polycarboxylate(PCE)-based superplasticizer is highly related to their adsorption behaviors as a function of *** study evaluated effects of PCEs on rheological properties of cementitious ***,characteristics of PCEs were characterized via permeation chromatography(GPC)and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry(FT-IR).The adsorption behavior of single and blended PCEs on cementitious composites was identified using total organic carbon analyzer(TOC).Based on the measurement of PCE adsorption,the changes of rheological properties of cementitious materials as well as the number of dispersed cement particles were characterized using a rheometer and laser spectroscopy,*** experimental results support the systematic mechanism of PCE adsorption,cement dispersion,and the decrease in viscosity of cementitious materials.

Herein,iron oxide/hydroxides deposits(gossans)were utilized,for the first time,in the fabrication of magnetite nanoparticles(MNPs)to load modified coal(MC).The as-synthesized MNPs@MC composite was characterized via different techniques and utilized for the Cr(Ⅵ)*** studies supported by theoretical treatment were applied to offer a new overview of the Cr(Ⅵ)adsorption geometry and mechanism at 25-45℃.Experimental results suggested that the Cr(Ⅵ)uptake was mainly governed by adsorption-reduction coupled *** Langmuir model fitted well the Cr(Ⅵ)adsorption data with maximum adsorption capacities extended from 115.24 to 129.63 mg·g^(-1).Theoretical calculations indicated that Cr(Ⅵ)ions were adsorbed on the MNPs@MC following the theory of the advanced monolayer statistical *** number of ions removed per site ranged from 1.88 to1.23 suggesting the involvement of vertical geometry and multi-ionic mechanism at all *** increment of the active sites density and the adsorption capacity at saturation with improving temperature reflected an endothermic ***,the Cr(Ⅵ)adsorption was controlled by physical forces as the adsorption energies were less than 40 kJ·mol^(-1).The calculated free enthalpy,*** internal energy explained the spontaneous nature and the viability of Cr(Ⅵ)adsorption on the MNPs@MC *** results offer a new approach in utilizing the iron-rich deposits as gossans in the preparation of magnetic and low-cost adsorbents for wastewater remediation.

If the wavelength is small compared to the characteristic size (e.g., mean free path) of a system component, it can be modelled as diffuse. Recently, a method of analysis was developed to compute the detailed response field of built-up systems containing both diffuse and deterministic vibro-acoustic components. In this method, diffuse field realizations are generated in a Monte Carlo framework, from which the joint probability density function of the response can be obtained. The approach is computationally efficient because the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the diffuse components are directly drawn from universal probability distributions: the local eigenvalue spacings conform to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble and the mode shapes are zero-mean Gaussian random fields. So far, only discrete couplings between system components have been investigated, whereas in practical applications, components may be coupled over a domain (e.g., the surface of a plate when coupled with an acoustic volume). In this contribution, domain couplings are established by generating realizations of coupling terms appearing in the coupled equilibrium equations. The probability density functions of these coupling terms are derived analytically to enable computationally efficient realizations. The method is applied to analyze the sound field in an aircraft cabin. © 2023 Van hoorickx et al.
