Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Background: High-resolution estimates of HIV burden across space and time provide an important tool for tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts and assist with improving the precision and efficiency of targeting efforts. We aimed to assess HIV incidence and HIV mortality for all second-level administrative units across sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: In this modelling study, we developed a framework that used the geographically specific HIV prevalence data collected in seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care clinics to train a model that estimates HIV incidence and mortality among individuals aged 15–49 years. We used a model-based geostatistical framework to estimate HIV prevalence at the second administrative level in 44 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for 2000–18 and sought data on the number of individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) by second-level administrative unit. We then modified the Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) to use these HIV prevalence and treatment estimates to estimate HIV incidence and mortality by second-level administrative unit. Findings: The estimates suggest substantial variation in HIV incidence and mortality rates both between and within countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with 15 countries having a ten-times or greater difference in estimated HIV incidence between the second-level administrative units with the lowest and highest estimated incidence levels. Across all 44 countries in 2018, HIV incidence ranged from 2·8 (95% uncertainty interval 2·1–3·8) in Mauritania to 1585·9 (1369·4–1824·8) cases per 100 000 people in Lesotho and HIV mortality ranged from 0·8 (0·7–0·9) in Mauritania to 676·5 (513·6–888·0) deaths per 100 000 people in Lesotho. Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Many companies are confronted with an increasingly large number of business rules. Consequently, means for efficient and effective management of these business rules are necessary. However, business Rule Management Systems (BRMS) frequently provide only simple business rule organization techniques such as collecting business rules into rule sets according to a single criterion. Many fields organize information by contexts that may be hierarchically structured. Similarly, we propose the use of contexts to manage business rules and associated business vocabulary. We survey context literature and identify dimensions and possible choices for each dimension to compare and relate different context models. For each dimension we propose the appropriate choice for a context model of business rules and business vocabulary. Based on these choices we present a generic context model for business rules and business vocabulary that can be instantiated multi-level: for a specific domain and for a concrete application. We demonstrate the usefulness of the generic context model for business rules and vocabulary by relating it to a use case in the aeronautical domain, the semantic filtering of digital Notices to Airmen. This real world use case addressed in the SemNOTAM project involves thousands of business rules and extensive business vocabularies. These need to be organized along multiple hierarchical context parameters (e.g. aircraft type, mode of operation) such that they become manageable with regard to definition, maintenance, extension, and determining the business rules and business vocabulary relevant for a specific business case (e.g. flight plan of a pilot, responsibility area of a controller).

Online analytical processing tools facilitate interactive inspection of aggregated measures of groups of data in data warehouses. In comparative data analysis, business analysts assess measures of a group of interest against measures of a group of comparison. Judgement rules annotate comparisons with background knowledge otherwise tacit to the business analyst. Analysis rules specify comparisons at different granularities and result in recommendations for further analyses. Judgement and analysis rules build on multidimensional ontologies, which simplify definition, reuse, and sharing of comparisons, and on comparative scores, which make explicit the results of comparisons. In this paper, we introduce conceptual modelling of judgement and analysis rules together with their organisation and multidimensional contextualisation in rule families, explain different rule evaluation strategies, and brie y report on the implementation of the approach. © 2015, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

The ongoing research and development in the field of Natural Language Processing has lead to a great number of technologies in its context. There have been major benefits when it comes to bringing together the worlds of natural language and semantic technologies, so more and more potential areas of application emerge. One of these is the subject of this paper, in particular the possible ways of knowledge extraction from single-question online polls. With concepts of the Social Web, internet users want to contribute and express their opinion. As a consequence, the popularity of online polls is rapidly increasing;they can be found in news articles of media sites, on blogs etc. It would be desirable to bring intelligence to the application of polls by using technologies of the Semantic Web and Natural Language Processing as this would allow to build a great knowledge base and to draw conclusions from it. This paper surveys the current landscape of tools and state-of-the-art technologies and analyses them with regard to pre-defined requirements that need to be accomplished, in order to be useful for extracting knowledge from the results generated by online polls. © 2016 ACM.

Group formation and evolution are prominent topics in social contexts. This paper focuses on the analysis of group evolution events in networks of face-to-face proximity. We first analyze statistical properties of group evolution, e.g., individual activity and typical group sizes. After that, we define a set of specific group evolution events. These are analyzed in the context of an academic conference, where we provide different patterns according to phases of the conference. Specifically, we investigate group formation and evolution using real-world data collected at the LWA 2010 conference utilizing the Conferator system, and discuss patterns according to different phases of the conference. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Despite numerous recent efforts, 3D object retrieval based on partial shape queries remains a challenging problem, far from being solved. The problem can be defined as: given a partial view of a shape as query, retrieve all partially similar 3D models from a repository. The objective of this track is to evaluate the performance of partial 3D object retrieval methods, for partial shape queries of various scan qualities and degrees of partiality. The retrieval problem is often found in cultural heritage applications, for which partial scans of objects query a dataset of geometrically distinct classes. © 2016 The Eurographics Association.

Gliomas are the most common primary brain malignancies, with different degrees of aggressiveness, variable prognosis and various heterogeneous histologic sub-regions, i.e., peritumoral edematous/invaded tissue, necrotic core, active and non-enhancing core. This intrinsic heterogeneity is also portrayed in their radio-phenotype, as their sub-regions are depicted by varying intensity profiles disseminated across multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) scans, reflecting varying biological properties. Their heterogeneous shape, extent, and location are some of the factors that make these tumors difficult to resect, and in some cases inoperable. The amount of resected tumor is a factor also considered in longitudinal scans, when evaluating the apparent tumor for potential diagnosis of progression. Furthermore, there is mounting evidence that accurate segmentation of the various tumor sub-regions can offer the basis for quantitative image analysis towards prediction of patient overall survival. This study assesses the state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) methods used for brain tumor image analysis in mpMRI scans, during the last seven instances of the International Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge, i.e., 2012-2018. Specifically, we focus on i) evaluating segmentations of the various glioma sub-regions in pre-operative mpMRI scans, ii) assessing potential tumor progression by virtue of longitudinal growth of tumor sub-regions, beyond use of the RECIST/RANO criteria, and iii) predicting the overall survival from pre-operative mpMRI scans of patients that underwent gross total resection. Finally, we investigate the challenge of identifying the best ML algorithms for each of these tasks, considering that apart from being diverse on each instance of the challenge, the multi-institutional mpMRI BraTS dataset has also been a continuously evolving/growing dataset.
