This paper discusses topological geometrical aspects and a control strategy for a distributed port-Hamiltonian system with a non-integrable structure called a distributed energy structure. First, we show a geometrical structure of port variables determined by differential forms. Next, we state the necessary condition for regarding the distributed energy structure as a boundary energy structure which is boundary integrable. From these results, we define the fundamental form that generates the distributed port-Hamiltonian system with distributed energy structures in a variational problem. Finally, we present a new concept of boundary controls for the distributed port-Hamiltonian system with distributed energy structures in space-time coordinates.

In this paper, the port-representation of conservation laws is extended to a wider class of symmetries, the infinite-dimensional symmetry expressed by the bi-Hamiltonian system. It is known from Noether's theorem that a conservation law is associated with an invariant property called a symmetry. In certain cases, the symmetry appears in a system as a hidden infinite-dimensional structure. Such a structure can be defined by using a recursive operator consisting of a Hamiltonian pair and is called a bi-Hamiltonian structure. The bi-Hamiltonian structure induces a hierarchical set of conservation laws. This concept can be used for reducing a system possessing a bi-Hamiltonian structure to simpler port-representations of the conservation laws. Finally, a boundary observer for symmetry destruction is shown.

The relation between a port-representation and an infinite-dimensional Euler-Lagrange equation has previously been studied before by the authors. The formal form is called a field port-Lagrangian system. However, this system was considered under the condition that the Lagrangian was regular and the case of a degenerate Lagrangian was not explicitly shown. This paper presents a more general framework for the field port-Lagrangian system from the viewpoint of the treatment of degenerate Lagrangian and external forces.

Constructing of flexible and intelligent human-robot interface that can catch the human intention correctly and lead to the success of the required tasks in complex environment by a robot has become a new challenging research subject. In this research, we proposed to apply NIRS (near infrared spectroscopy) to measure the brain activities during the free body motion, we aim to use it as an interface to control the motion of robots directly in the near future. In detail, two basic types of experiments of a human subject are performed so as to distinguish the human brain activities in different tasks, one is the thinking task and another is during the subject's body motions. For each type of experiment, we also set two different tasks. For the thinking experiment, we studied the tasks when the human subject is performing mathematic calculations and puzzles. For the experiment during body motions, we studied finger tapping and tongue extension tasks. As a result, although we couldn't found the difference of the right and left brain activities in the different thinking experiments, we successfully caught the difference of brain activities for different body motions, which left us the possibility of NIRS as an important technology in constructing the brain-robot interface.

Supply chain management (SCM) is concerned with the efficient movement of goods through a network of suppliers and retailers. Effective SCM represents a crucial imperative for all modern, global enterprises. As delayed and uncertain dynamical systems, supply chains provide an excellent opportunity for demonstrating the benefits of control principles to what is traditionally perceived as a "business" problem. This paper describes a series of control systems for a standard production-inventory system (the basic unit of a supply chain) which have been used at Arizona State University as MATLAB ®-based exercises in both undergraduate and graduate-level process control courses. Among the important control concepts illustrated by these exercises are: 1) modeling of supply chain dynamics using fluid analogies, 2) the benefits of multi-degree-of-freedom feedbackfeedforward control over feedback-only control, and 3) the application of Internal Model control and Model Predictive control. The development of control-oriented decision policies for inventory management in supply chains has received considerable interest in recent years, and demand modeling to supply forecasts for these policies is an important component of an effective solution to this problem. Drawing from the problem of control-relevant identification, we present an approach for demand modeling based on data that relies on a control-relevant prefilter to tailor the emphasis of the fit to the intended purpose of the model, which is to provide forecast signals to a tactical inventory management policy based on Model Predictive control. Integrating the demand modeling and inventory control problems offers the opportunity to obtain reduced-order models that exhibit superior performance, with potentially lower user effort relative to traditional “open-loop„ methods. A systematic approach to generating these prefilters is presented and the benefits resulting from their use are demonstrated on a representative production/inventory system case study.

A novel methodology that integrates a directional multisine input design procedure and control-relevant parameter estimation is developed in this paper, leading to desirable models for the control of highly interactive multivariable process systems. A priori information on system directionality is utilized in the input design procedure and recognized in the subsequent parameter estimation step, which consists of control-relevant curve fitting of frequency responses obtained from identification data. As a result, a systematic procedure for generating a control-relevant model with balanced gain directionality is developed, appropriate for highly interactive processes. A case study involving a binary distillation column and model predictive control is presented in this paper to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

Efficient management of inventory in supply chains is critical to the profitable operation of modern enterprises. The supply/demand networks characteristic of discrete-parts industries such as semiconductor manufacturing represent highly stochastic, nonlinear, and constrained dynamical systems whose study merits a control-oriented approach. Model predictive control (MPC) is presented in this paper as the basis for a novel inventory management policy for supply chains whose dynamic behavior can be adequately represented by fluid analogies. A simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) optimization algorithm is presented as a means to obtain optimal tuning parameters for the proposed policies. The SPSA technique is capable of optimizing important system parameters, such as safety stock targets and/or controller tuning parameters. Two case studies are presented. The results of the optimization on a single-echelon system show that it is advantageous to act cautiously to forecasted information and gradually become more aggressive (with respect to factory starts) as more accurate demand information becomes available. For a three-echelon problem, the results of the optimization demonstrate that safety stock levels can be significantly reduced and financial benefit gained while maintaining robust operation in the supply chain
