The primary operational objective of liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants with low production capacity is to maximize LNG production. A robust control structure is required to meet economic objective while ensuring safety of the plant. The selection of appropriate controlled variables (CVs) is critical for design of the control structure. In this paper, general process understanding and the concept of self-optimizing control are used to select CVs for the liquefaction unit of an LNG process. The analysis is carried out using a steady state model developed in gPROMS. It is shown that with appropriate selection of CVs, the effect of disturbances and uncertainty can be minimized on the operational objective of the LNG plant.

The interaction of DNA with cationic gemini surfactant trimethylene-1,3-bis (dodecyl dimethyl-ammonium bromide) (12-3-12) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) mixed system has been investigated by measuring the fluorescence, zeta potential, UV-Vis spectrum, and circular dichroism. In the absence of SDS, owing to the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, 12-3-12 forms micelle-like structure on the DNA chain before the micellization in bulk phase. For the mixed system of 12-3-12 and SDS, the negative charges on SDS can compete against DNA to bind with cationic 12-3-12 because of the stronger interaction between oppositely charged surfactants, and thus, the catanionic mixed micelles are formed before the formation of DNA/12-3-12 complexes. Thereafter, the positive charges on the mixed micelles bind with DNA, and thus, the change of the zeta potential from negative to positive is distinctly different from the system without SDS. Meanwhile, the existence of SDS postpones the exclusion of ethidium bromide (EB) from DNA/EB complexes. The conformation of DNA undergoes a change from native B-form to chiral ψ-phase as binding with 12-3-12 process. Upon adding SDS to the DNA/12-3-12 complex solution, however, DNA is released to the bulk and the ψ-phase returns to B-form again.

A thermally actuated organic display device using UV-sensitive polydiacetylene (PDA)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite film with self aligned patterns is presented. A novel technique that patterns UV-sensitive organic films on a transparent substrate using a chip-embedded photomask is demonstrated. In contrast to related works regarding PDA and its composites, the current investigation represents the first attempt to realize a PDA derivative film for a thermal-display. Micro-pixels ranging from 200 mum to 700 mum size were fabricated on a glass substrate. The transition tones of the blue, red and yellow micro-pixels were successfully tuned with embedded micro-heaters under the PDA-PVA layer using both low-temperature (75degC) and high-temperature (180degC) activation processes. The retention time was measured and found to be less than a few hundred milliseconds.

Ink tack on a press is known to influence printing operations and the quality of the final printed product. Much recent work has looked at the influence of coating structure on ink tack development, but less has been reported with regard to the influence of the press blanket texture on the separation forces at the nip exit. In this work, a rolling nip device, with a flush mounted pressure transducer, is used to measure the ink tack in a rolling nip that simulates the actual printing conditions. In this device, the rolls are loaded with a known force and then brought up to speed. The pressure pulses are recorded at each revolution. The influence of blanket type on the maximum and minimum pressures is reported. Rough blanket textures are found to correlate with smaller tack forces, but the pressure peak is not influenced. Tack magnitudes are found to also depend on speed and the type of fluid. The reduction of tack force with increase blanket texture is thought to be related to the earlier onset of cavitation at the nip exit.
