The heterogeneous metal-organic framework Bi-BTC successfully catalyzed the synthesis of para -xylene from bio-based 2,5-dimethylfuran and acrylic acid in a promising yield (92 %), under relatively mild conditions (160 °C, 10 bar), and with a low reaction-energy barrier (47.3 kJ mol −1 ). The proposed reaction strategy also demonstrates a remarkable versatility for furan derivatives such as furan and 2-methylfuran.

The Effects of Audible Sound for Enhancing the Growth Rate of Microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis in Vegetative Stage

Physico-stimulant like audible sound is one of the new promising methods for enhancing microalgae growth rate. Here, microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis was cultivated with the addition of audible sound with titles “Blues for Elle” and “Far and Wide.” The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of audible sound to the growth and productivity of microalgae. The experiment has been conducted by exposing the audible sound for 8 h in 22 days to microalgae cultivation. The result showed that microalgae H. pluvialis treated by the music “Blues for Elle” shows the highest growth rate (0.03 per day), and 58% higher than the one without audible sound. The average number of cells in stationary phase is 0.76 × 10⁴ cells/mL culture and the productivity is 3.467 × 10² cells/mL/day. The pH of microalgae medium slightly decreases because of proton production during photosynthesis process. The kinetic rate constant (k_app) is 0.078 per day, reaction half-life (t_1/2) is 8.89 days, and catalytic surface (K_surf) is 1.66 × 10⁻⁵/day/cm². In conclusion, this audible sound is very useful to stimulate microalgae growth rate, especially H. pluvialis. © 2017 Institut Pertanian Bogor

Analysis of piperine content in cabe jawa extracts (Piper retrofractum Vahl) using UV spectrophotometry and HPLC

Cabe Jawa (Piper retrofractum Vahl) is an important commodity for herbal industries in Indonesia. One of the bioactive compounds in this herb is piperine. In this study, concentration of piperine in Cabe Jawa was analysed using HPLC and UV spectrophotometry methods. Cabe Jawa samples were prepared using two different methods. The first sample (S1) was dried from fresh Piper retrofractum, while the second sample (S2) was dried from boiled Piper retrofractum. Both samples were extracted using Soxhlet, followed by solvent evaporation to obtain the concentrated extract. Piperine concentration was measured using UV spectrophotometry and HPLC via internal standard method. The yields of extract of S1 and S2 were 23.0% and 22.1%, respectively. Piperine UV spectrophotometry standard curve equation was y = 0.1107*(X)-0.1578, R2 = 0.9999, whereas HPLC standard curve equation was y = 105916*(X) + 28100.9, R2 = 0.9978. Piperine concentration in S1 and S2 extracts quantified using UV spectrophotometry were 19.0% and 18.1%., respectively. The values for S were much higher compared to values obtained by HPLC, which were 6.8% (S1) and 7.3% (S2). Therefore, the use of UV spectrophotometry for analysis of piperine is not recommended due to the interference of other compounds, which are absorbed at the same wavelength.

Room‐Temperature Ferroelectricity in an Organic Cocrystal

Ferroelectric materials exhibit switchable remanent polarization due to reversible symmetry breaking under an applied electric field. Previous research has leveraged temperature‐induced neutral‐ionic transitions in charge‐transfer (CT) cocrystals to access ferroelectrics that operate through displacement of molecules under an applied field. However, displacive ferroelectric behavior is rare in organic CT cocrystals and achieving a Curie temperature ( T C ) above ambient has been elusive. Here a cocrystal between acenaphthene and 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro‐7,7,8,8‐tetracyanoquinodimethane is presented that shows switchable remanent polarization at room temperature ( T C =68 °C). Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and solid‐state NMR spectroscopy indicate the ferroelectric behavior is facilitated by acenaphthene (AN) rotation, deviating from conventional design strategies for CT ferroelectrics. These findings highlight the relevance of non‐CT interactions in the design of displacive ferroelectric cocrystals.

Oxygenated cadmium sulfide (CdS:O) is an alternative CdTe window layer that delivers improved blue response relative to CdS. Our recent study revealed that CdS: O completely transforms during device fabrication into a layer containing cadmium sulfate clusters interspersed among CdS1-yTey nanocrystals. This motivated us to study CdTe solar cells employing pre-formed CdS1-yTey alloy windows without sulfate present. The intrinsic properties of alloys deposited by co-evaporation are evaluated and then used in place of CdS in standard device fabrication. Interestingly we find that device efficiency is nominally unchanged, but there are significant tradeoffs between current collection, fill factor, and open circuit voltage with alloy composition. XRD analysis of interdiffusion with CdTe is performed and the results show that it is largely suppressed in alloy-based devices. © 2017 IEEE.

Among different efforts to increase the competitiveness of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the energy storage marketplace, reducing the cost of production is a major effort by the LIB industry. This work proposes a synthesis method to decrease the production cost for LiFePO4, by synthesizing the material through an open-air environment solid state reaction. The lithium (Li)-ion battery is a member of the family of rechargeable batteries. In our approach, iron phosphate (FePO4) powder is preheated to eliminate moisture. Once dried, the FePO4is mixed with lithium acetate (CH3COOLi), and the mixture is heated in a tube furnace. The solid-state reaction is conducted in an open-air environment. In order to minimize the oxidation of the formed LiFePO4, a modified tube reaction vessel is utilized during synthesis. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) are used to characterize the crystal structure and chemical composition of the synthesized material. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization shows the grain size of the formed LiFePO4 to be in the range of 200 nm to 600 nm. Cycling testing of fabricated battery cells using the synthesized LiFePO4 is done using an Arbin Tester. © 2017 Materials Research Society.

Safety is one of the most crucial problems faced by the lithium-ion battery (LIBs) industry. In this work, we propose a strategy to avoid overcharging of a battery via the application of a solid-state combined cathode. The goal of this research is to produce LIBs with overcharge self-regulation capabilities. In order to achieve self-regulation functionality, 1,4-di-tert-butyl-2,5-dimethoxybenzene (DBB) is added to as-synthesized LiFePO4, post synthesis. DBB has a trigger voltage of 3.9 V. When this voltage is reached, DBB forms a reduced ion that is released into the electrolyte from the cathode side. The DBB ion transfers to the anode side where it oxidizes and transfers back to the cathode side. This process forms a redox shuttle and consumes the extra charges keeping the voltage at a safe level (i.e. 3.9 V). The DBB redox shuttle protects the LiFePO4-based LIBs with working voltage between 3.4 and 3.5 V. The cycleability of assembled batteries is tested using an Arbin Tester. © 2017 Materials Research Society.

URu2Si2 exhibits an anomalous peak in the nonlinear magnetic susceptibility at the hidden order transition. In order to investigate this anomaly, we conducted direct magnetization measurements and investigated the detailed angular dependence of the Si29 nuclear magnetic resonance Knight shift tensor. We find that the nonlinear magnetization is smaller than previously reported, and the analogous nonlinear Knight shift tensor is below the detection limit. Our results suggest that the magnitude of the anomalous peak is sample dependent.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).
