In Brazil, the use of Eucalyptus is focused on the production of wood or pulp for the paper industry but without any general recovery of waste, with leaves and branches being left on the ground. One possibility is to use these residues as raw materials in the production of industrially relevant and value-added compounds such as essential oil. The aim of the present study was to investigate the chemical composition, yield, anti-inflammatory/antinociceptive activities, and acute toxicity in mice, as well as the antimicrobial effects of essential oils from the leaves of 7 varieties of Eucalyptus and hybrids against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans . The extraction of oils was carried out using hydrodistillation, and they were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Urocam and Grancam were the plants that obtained the highest oil yield, with yields of 3.32 and 2.30%, respectively. The main chemical components identified in these plants were 1.8 cineole and α -pinene. The antinociceptive effect of the 7 oils (50 mg/kg, p.o.) was initially assessed in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. In this assay, a significant ( p < 0.05) antinociceptive/anti-inflammatory effect was observed from 4 tested essential oils ( E. benthamii, E. saligna, and the hybrids Urocam and Grancam) when compared to the vehicle-treated group. This effect was then confirmed in the formalin-induced paw licking test. No toxicological effects or alterations were observed in motor coordination after the administration of the studied oils to the animals. In the antimicrobial evaluation, the seven essential oils inhibited the growth of S. aureus, E. coli , and C. albicans at different concentrations. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the essential oil from the leaves and branches of Eucalyptus species and varieties present potential biomedical applications and represent a source of antimicrobial and/or anti-inflammatory compounds.

作者： AILOR, W.H. LINDBERG, R.I. William H. Ailor has been a member of the Chemical Metallurgy Section of the Metallurgical Research Division Reynolds Metals Company for six years. Educated in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Tampa Florida and North Carolina State College. He is Task Force chairman of the ASTM B-3/V1 1957 20-Year Test Program for the atmospheric corrosion of metals secretary of ASTM Committee B-3 and is a member of the Electrochemical Society and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. He formerly taught diesel engineering at North Carolina State College. He is a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. During World War II he served as engineering officer afloat and later as commanding officer of USS PC 616 and USS Belet (APD-109). Recalled to service in the Korean conflict he served 17 months as executive officer of the USS Robinson (DD 562). He is in the active reserve and formerly was commanding officer of Surface Division 6–42 in Jacksonville Fla. Currently he is training officer of MSTS Co. 5-1 in Richmond Va. R. I. Lindberg is a corrosion engineer in the engineering services department of Reynolds Metals Company. Author of several papers on corrosion in marine environments Mr. Lindberg is a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. Prior to joining Reynolds in 1959 Mr. Lindberg was director of corrosion research for A. M. Byers Co. Pittsbugh Pa. Mr. Lindberg graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1939 with B. S. and Ch. E. degrees. He took post graduate work at Purdue University receiving a Master of Science degree in 1942.

Faunus ater is a favoritemollusca that is often found on the Bale River. Local people use these snails as food for consumption along with their main food. Bale River itself is located adjacent to the cement factory, used water washing machines distributed to the river is feared to support the presence of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) metals in the river. This study aims to analyze the relationship of Pb and Zn content in sediments to the content of Pb and Zn in Faunus ater. Data collection was carried out in Februari until April 2018. The relationship between Pb and Zn content in sediments with Pb and Zn content in the body of Faunus ater was analyzed by correlation analysis. The results of the data analysis showed that the metal content of Pb and Zn in sediment and Faunus aterwere found to vary. The highest Pb content in sediment was found at station 2 in March, amounting to 32.87 mg / kg. while the highest Zn content was found at station 1 in March amounting to 84 mg / kg. The relationship of heavy metals Pb and Zn in sediments to the content of Pb and Zn in the body of Faunus ater showed a negative correlation. The conclusion of this study is that there is no correlation between the content of Pb and Zn heavy metals in sediments on the content of lead Pb and Zn in the body of Faunus ater at the Bale Lhoknga River in Aceh Besar District.

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. Soft amorphous materials are viscoelastic solids ubiquitously found around us, from clays and cementitious pastes to emulsions and physical gels encountered in food or biomedical engineering. Under an external deformation, these materials undergo a noteworthy transition from a solid to a liquid state that reshapes the material microstructure. This yielding transition was the main theme of a workshop held from January 9 to 13, 2023 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden. The manuscript presented here offers a critical perspective on the subject, synthesizing insights from the various brainstorming sessions and informal discussions that unfolded during this week of vibrant exchange of ideas. The result of these exchanges takes the form of a series of open questions that represent outstanding experimental, numerical, and theoretical challenges to be tackled in the near future. © 2023, CC BY.
