Isocyanide-metal binding is governed by σ-donation and π-back-bonding, which affects the energy of the isocyanide stretching mode—a characteristic probe for ligand-metal interactions. While extensive correlations exist between structure and spectroscopy in molecular isocyanide-metal systems, isocyanide interactions with metallic crystalline surfaces, where ligands often bind in various geometries, remain poorly understood. Conventional vibrational spectroscopies, such as infrared and Raman, lack the molecular-scale resolution needed to distinguish these inhomogeneous configurations. In contrast, inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM-IETS) enables direct visualization of ligand adsorption geometries and their vibrational signatures. Using STM-IETS, here we investigate an metal-adsorbed m-terphenyl isocyanide ligand and find that adsorption geometry on Cu(100) induces a significant shift in isocyanide stretching frequency, even greater than replacing Cu(100) with Ag(111). Density functional theory confirms this shift arises from atomic-scale variations in isocyanide-metal binding. This study elucidates how atomic-scale binding influences the vibrational signatures of isocyanide ligands—an often-overlooked factor in understanding isocyanide-metal interactions. © 2025, CC BY.

P-type oxide semiconductors as a conducting channel layer have attracted huge attention owing to wide applications in electronic devices. In this study, multi-component oxide-semiconductor Cu1-2xMnxSnxO thin films with x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, and 0.33 were successfully prepared on glass substrates, by using a solution process accompanied with a spin-coating technique. One obtained that, a phase transition between the CuO monoclinic structure and the rock salt structure was observed when leveling up the concentration of Mn and Sn, simultaneously to descending the concentration of Cu in the precursors. The crystallite size was found to decrease throughout the samples, with a minimum value of 9.8 nm towards the equimolar ratio. The scanning electron microscope confirmed further the downward tendency as mentioned above, and indicated an improvement in the film surfaces as well. According to the optical absorption measurement, the bandgap energy was determined to be in a range from 2.68 eV to 3.44 eV. Interestingly, the sheet resistance of Cu1-2xMnxSnxO films witnessed a sharp drop from 5.24 kΩ/sq of CuO to 0.034 kΩ/sq at the film with the molar ratio Cu:Mn:Sn being 34:33:33. © 2024, The Authors. The purpose of this workshop-designed for instructional and disciplinary STEM faculty interested in learning about qualitative research-is to (1) introduce participants to high-quality qualitative research design and (2) practice this design process alongside disciplinary STEM faculty to expand their STEM education research abilities and network. We will do so using the ProQual approach, a methodologically unencumbered and widely accessible way of thinking about qualitative research design that was deployed and refined over the last three years as part of the NSF-funded ProQual Institute for Research Methods [1]. This workshop will be conducted by ProQual Institute alumni, who are culturally sensitive to the challenges faced by disciplinary STEM faculty. Leveraging a propagation model of effecting academic change [2], the workshop leaders will serve as a community of practice to help participants move their educational research ideas forward during and after the workshop. In doing so, we strive to further FIE's mission to create a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive community of educational researchers.

The production of biofuels to be used as bioenergy under combustion processes generates some gaseous emissions (CO, CO₂, NO_x, SO_x, and other pollutants), affecting living organisms and requiring careful assessments. However, obtaining such information experimentally for data evaluation is costly and time-consuming and its in situ obtaining for regional biomasses (e.g., those from Northeast Brazil (NEB) is still a major challenge. This paper reports on the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of the main air pollutants (CO, CO₂, NO, and SO₂) produced during the direct biomass combustion (N₂/O₂:80/20%) with the use of ultimate analysis (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen). 116 worldwide biomasses were used as input data, which is a relevant alternative to overcome the lack of experimental resources in NEB and obtain such information. Cross-validation was conducted with k-fold to optimize the ANNs and performance was analyzed with the use of statistical errors for accuracy assessments. The results showed an acceptable statistical performance for all architectures of ANNs, with 0.001–12.41% MAPE, 0.001–5.82 mg Nm⁻³ MAE, and 0.03–52.30 mg Nm⁻³ RMSE, highlighting the high precision of the emissions studied. On average, the differences between predicted and real values for CO, CO₂, NO, and SO₂ emissions from NEB biomasses were approximately 0.01%, 10⁻⁶%, 0.14%, and 0.05%, respectively. Pearson coefficient provided consistent results of concentration of the ultimate analysis in relation to the emissions studied and effectiveness of the test set in the developed models. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Quincke Oscillations of Colloids at Planar Electrodes

Dielectric particles in weakly conducting fluids rotate spontaneously when subject to strong electric fields. Such Quincke rotation near a plane electrode leads to particle translation that enables physical models of active matter. In this Letter, we show that Quincke rollers can also exhibit oscillatory dynamics, whereby particles move back and forth about a fixed location. We explain how oscillations arise for micron-scale particles commensurate with the thickness of a field-induced boundary layer in the nonpolar electrolyte. This work enables the design of colloidal oscillators.

We study topologically stable defect structures in systems where the defect line classification in three dimensions and associated algebra of interactions (the fundamental group) are governed by the non-Abelian 8-element group, the quaternions Q8. The non-Abelian character of the defect algebra leads to a topological rigidity of bound defect pairs, and trivalent junctions which are the building blocks of multi-junction trivalent networks. chemical additives to perovskite precursors constitute a predominant route to passivate defects in perovskite films and improve carrier charge dynamics. In this work, ionic liquids (ILs) with chloride and iodide anions are used as additives for bulk passivation of perovskite films. The ionic liquids in the form of 1‑butyl‑4-methylpyradinium iodide (IL-I) and 1-ethylimidazolium chloride (IL-Cl) are mixed individually with a precursor of Cesium Formamidinium Lead Triiodide and Methylammonium Chloride (CsFAPbI3−MACl). The decay of charge carriers within the perovskite film before and after passivation with ILs was measured by Time Resolved Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (TRPL). The effect of added ILs on the recombination rate of the photocarriers was investigated by analyzing the decay of the TRPL signal in all samples. The average lifetimes obtained within one day of preparations were 79 ns, 73 ns and 275 ns for pristine perovskite, IL-I passivated perovskite and IL-Cl passivated perovskite films, respectively. These values show that the presence of the IL with chloride anion greatly improves the average lifetime of the charge carrier by around 250%, while IL with iodide anion decreased the lifetime by 32% as compared with the pristine perovskite sample. This finding renders the IL-Cl passivated perovskite films as a valuable resource in applications ranging from photoelectric to hydrogen generation devices. © 2023

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which is suitable for use in the human body owing to its biocompatibility, is commonly used in medical applications such as bone nails, bone cement, and dentures. However, owing to its hard and brittle nature, PMMA can cause damage when it is subjected to excessive stress and can also cause severe wear. In this study, three different sizes of silica particles were used as reinforcing additives to enhance the wear resistance of PMMA composites. A pin-on-disk wear test was conducted to record the coefficient of friction and wear volume, and the wear volume was measured using a 3D laser scanning microscope. In the wear test, the transfer film of micron and submicron particles produced a plowing effect, resulting in wide grooved wear scars and a higher wear rate than the raw material. The nanoparticle transfer film reduced direct material wear, the wear scars were fine and flat, and the wear rate was decreased, reducing the wear of SiO2-reinforced PMMA composites by 40%. The experimental results revealed that the wear volume is proportional to the wear time. In addition, the observed area of the transfer film on the wear counterpart can be used as a service life sensor of the coating material. © MYU K.K.

The generation of agro-industrial waste has become a growing concern due to the high volume generated, which can result in increased environmental pollution. In this respect, the reuse of these materials as adsorbents would contribute to environmental sustainability. Flaxseed and orange waste are co-products that can be given added value when functionalized with metallic nanoparticles that have an antibacterial action, becoming an alternative for water contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms, an increasingly recurring problem in the world due to the quality of the water consumed and distributed to the population. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to develop adsorbents with brown flaxseed and orange peel waste impregnated with copper and silver nanoparticles using green synthesis to evaluate the antibacterial activity of these adsorbents against two bacterial strains, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in contaminated water. For the synthesis of the nanomaterials, copper and silver nitrates were used as precursors, and Moringa oleifera leaf extract as a reducing agent. For the microbiological tests, MIC and MBC were initially evaluated. Subsequently, adsorption, bacterial growth curve, and time-kill tests were carried out for E. coli and P. aeruginosa. The antibacterial and bactericidal activities of the functionalized materials were demonstrated. The proposed adsorption mechanism reported that increasing the mass favored a higher percentage of bacterial reduction. However, the adsorbents functionalized with copper oxide nanoparticles showed better results against the bacteria under study, using the lowest mass of material (0.05 g), achieving a 99 % reduction of bacterial biomass after 24 h of treatment. In addition, the inhibition of E. coli and P. aeruginosa biomass was effectively observed after 2 h of treatment, demonstrating that these materials have a high potential for controlling these microorganisms in water. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
