In this paper, we consider a joint scheduling algorithm which is a combination of Knopp and Humblet (KH) scheduling, which fully exploits multiuser diversity, and round-robin (RR) scheduling, which does not use multiuser diversity at all. By assuming that the wireless channel process for each user is described by Gilbert-Elliot channel model, we develop a formula to estimate the tail distribution of packet delay for an arbitrary user under the joint scheduling. Numerical results exhibit that under the joint scheduling; the ratio of the number of slots assigned for the RR scheduling to that for the KH scheduling dominates the delay performance

Recent experiments and calculations have highlighted the important role of surface-energy (γ) anisotropy in governing island formation in the Ge/Si(001) system. To further elucidate the factors determining this anisotropy, we perform atomistic and continuum calculations of the orientation dependence of γ for strained-Ge surfaces near (001), accounting for the presence of dimer-vacancy lines (DVLs). The net effect of DVLs is found to be a substantial reduction in the magnitude of the slope of γ vs orientation angle, relative to the highly negative value derived for non-DVL, dimer-reconstructed, strained-Ge(001) surfaces. The present results thus point to an important role of DVLs in stabilizing the (001) surface orientation of a strained-Ge wetting layer.

This paper explores the development of and pilot study done on an online textbook and research tool, based on the book, "how to model it", by Starfield, Smith and Bleloch. In many engineering design texts, the solution(s) to design problems are provided in the pages following the proposed problem. With this online system, students are able to read only a portion of the text, and then must complete one or more tasks for which they submit a response to the system. This approach forces the students to begin practicing the engineering design process, rather than simply reading about someone else's design process. As a research tool, the computerized method of data gathering addresses the issue of increasing sampling frequency without much larger investment in research time, as no transcription is required. To simulate adequately the process of heat exchange taking place in a solar collector, structural scheme of heat transfer in the collector wall has been developed. Structural model of heat exchange, which is visualization of the interaction and transformation of heat flows both on the boundary and inside a plate, has been built based on the solution of the task of thermal conductivity of the plate with boundary conditions of the third type and due account of internal sources of heat induced by IR irradiation. In this paper we study convergence of the max-product (MP) algorithm on general graphs with cycles. Our analysis follows analogously to that given for the convergence of the sum-product algorithm. We do not work with Gibbs measures but instead we introduce and work with local maxifiers. The contributions of this paper include: reformulation of the MP algorithm on cyclic graphs as max-marginalization on an associated computation tree; existence of local maxifiers and proof that uniqueness of the local maxifier is sufficient for convergence of MP; a Gibbsian theory of local maxifiers and interpretation as operators; an example of non-uniqueness which does not exhibit a phase transition like its Gibbs measure counterpart; and insights into the limitations of Dobrushin-type uniqueness conditions
