Skin pathologies encompass a spectrum of conditions, with malignancies such as melanoma representing a critical diagnostic urgency. This investigation delineates the deployment of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for the classification of dermatological anomalies, benchmarking CNN diagnostic fidelity against dermatological expert evaluations. The study underscores the efficacy of CNN classifiers in expediting the diagnostic workflow for various cutaneous disorders. Advocating for an automated diagnostic framework, the research introduces a CNN-based system aimed at reducing human diagnostic load, accelerating diagnostic timelines, and enhancing survival outcomes. Utilizing advanced image processing algorithms and deep learning architectures, the research presents an automated classification system for skin pathologies, addressing both benign and malignant presentations. The classification matrix includes nine dermatological conditions: actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, benign keratosis, dermatofibroma, melanoma, nevus, seborrheic keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma, and vascular lesions. The objective is to engineer a CNN model with robust diagnostic performance across a diverse lesion dataset, ensuring accurate identification and categorization of dermatological conditions. © 2024 IEEE.

A new approach toward obtaining polymer nanofibers via electrospinning the blend of polybenzimidazole (PBI) and surface-active oligoperoxide for further creation of smart polymer composites with tailored surface functionality via polymerization initiated from the large-area PBI nanofiber sheets is presented. The peroxide fragments localized on the nanofiber surface due to poor immiscibility of the polymers in the blend provide "fiber-initiated" radical polymerization aiming variation of the functionality, height, and packing density of grafted polymer brushes according to the application requirements. PBI-based nanofiber 2D sheets of the variable packing density of grafted poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (poly(HEMA)) or poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (poly(DMAEMA)) brushes were synthesized. The structure, morphology, and special unique properties of new nanofiber-based composites studied using combined techniques demonstrate the ability of our advanced technology to produce smart functional materials for enhanced multi-purpose performance. The nanofiber sheets functionalized with grafted poly(HEMA) brushes were studied as biocompatible scaffolds for the immobilization and growth of mammalian cells and tissues. Poly(DMAEMA)-modified nanofiber composites possess enhanced dielectric permittivity providing their potential application in nanoelectronics. © 2023, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.

Revealing Actual Viscoelastic Relaxation Times in Capillary Breakup

We use experiments and theory to elucidate the size effect in capillary breakup rheometry, where pre-stretching in the visco-capillary stage causes the apparent relaxation time to be consistently smaller than the actual value. We propose a method accounting for both the experimental size and the finite extensibility of polymers to extract the actual relaxation time. A phase diagram characterizes the expected measurement variability and delineates scaling law conditions. The results refine capillary breakup rheometry for viscoelastic fluids and advance the understanding of breakup dynamics across scales. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The implementation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst material in hydrogen (H2) evolution reaction (HER) has embarked renewed interest in the past decade. Rapid electron-hole pairs recombination and wide band gap of a photo-sensitive material of TiO2 are detrimental toward the targeted catalytical reaction. In this study, we present the rational design, fabrication, photocatalytic performance of TiO2-Cu/CuO/Cu2O heterostructures (CuTi) using viable chemical reduction method. The Z-scheme and S-scheme are succesfully generated across the TiO2/CuO/Cu2O interfaces, while the Schottky junction arises on the Cu perimeters. This is evidenced from the blue shifted about 0.3 eV of Cu 2p core level determined by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), in combination with the formation of inverse V-shape of the Mott-Schottky plots. In addition, we find that Cu/CuO/Cu2O facilitates photon absorption range up to the visible region. The multiple heterojunction and the large number of OHsurface enhanced charge carrier transfer are associated to the suppression of photoluminescence (PL) intensity, high surface hydroxyl (OHsurface) density in CuTi probed by XPS, and fast electron transfer based on the electrochemical measurements. The presence of OHsurface inhibits the recombination of electron. A significant H2 photogeneration rate enhancement is achieved when an optimized 5 wt% Cu/CuO/Cu2O concentration is used on TiO2 to achieve 7,157.19 μmol·g−1 (1,789.30 μmol·g−1·h−1). Based on this finding, zero emission energy innitiative could be materialized under multiple heterojunctions in photocatalytic process is beneficial for enhancing the H2 production. © 2025 The Authors

We consider the supercooled Stefan problem, which captures the freezing of a supercooled liquid, in one space dimension. A probabilistic reformulation of the problem allows us to define global solutions, even in the presence of blow-ups of the freezing rate. We provide a complete description of such solutions, by relating the temperature distribution in the liquid to the regularity of the ice growth process. The latter is shown to transition between (i) continuous differentiability, (ii) Hölder continuity, and (iii) discontinuity. In particular, in the second regime we rediscover the square root behavior of the growth process pointed out by Stefan in his seminal 1889 paper for the ordinary Stefan problem. In our second main theorem, we establish the uniqueness of the global solutions, a first result of this kind in the context of growth processes with singular self-excitation when blow-ups are present. © 2022 Mathematical Sciences Publishers.

Trustworthy Actionable Perturbations

Counterfactuals, or modified inputs that lead to a different outcome, are an important tool for understanding the logic used by machine learning classifiers and how to change an undesirable classification. Even if a counterfactual changes a classifier’s decision, however, it may not affect the true underlying class probabilities, i.e. the counterfactual may act like an adversarial attack and "fool" the classifier. We propose a new framework for creating modified inputs that change the true underlying probabilities in a beneficial way which we call Trustworthy Actionable Perturbations (TAP). This includes a novel verification procedure to ensure that TAP change the true class probabilities instead of acting adversarially. Our framework also includes new cost, reward, and goal definitions that are better suited to effectuating change in the real world. We present PAClearnability results for our verification procedure and theoretically analyze our new method for measuring reward. We also develop a methodology for creating TAP and compare our results to those achieved by previous counterfactual methods. © 2024, CC BY.

Uncommon in the South African higher education landscape, online learning came to the fore during the global pandemic. We present an account of the use of Microsoft Teams for hybrid mathematics tutorials in a one-semester Vector Calculus course at a South African university in 2022. Interviews with the lecturer, analysed through a Community of Inquiry lens, showed the lecturer's perspective of the design and experience for tutors and students. Our aim is to improve the design of future hybrid tutorials to ensure engineering students' capacity in mathematics is well developed, their communication skills are improved, and that they experience working in a team. Future research will evaluate students' and tutors' accounts of their experiences. Our findings raise awareness of the possibilities and potential difficulties when using Microsoft Teams for communication, teaching and learning mathematics. © 2022 IEEE.

The molecular orientations of conjugated materials on the substrate mainly include edge-on,face-on,and ***-on and face-on orientations have been widely observed,while end-on orientation has been rarely *** in organic solar cells(OSCs)charge transport is along the vertical direction,end-on orientation with conjugated backbones perpendicular to the substrate is recognized as the ideal microstructure for *** this work,we for the first time obtained the preferential end-on orientation in a conjugated molecular dyad that contains a conjugated backbone as donor and perylene bisimide side units as *** was realized by introducing a fused-ring structure to replace linear terthiophenes with conjugated backbones,yielding F-MDPBI and L-MDPBI ***,a shifting trend of the molecular orientation from dominating edge-on in L-MDPBI to preferential end-on in F-MDPBI was *** a consequence,vertical charge carrier mobilities in F-MDPBI are one order of magnitude higher than those with preferential edge-on orientation,so single-component OSCs based on this molecular dyad as a single photoactive layer provided a power conversion efficiency of 4.89% compared to 1.70% based on L-MDPBI with preferential edge-on orientation.

Controlled C-N configurations,i.e.,pyrrolic-N,pyridinic-N,and graphitic-N,are promising strategies to tailor the carbon dots’(CDs)optical properties into the first near infrared(NIR)window(650-900 nm),a responsive range for biomedical ***,a deep understanding of the role of the C-N configuration in the CDs’properties is still challenging and thoughtprovoking owing to their complex ***,an underlying pyrrolic-N concentration and position effect on the pyrrolic-N-rich CDs’absorption was comprehensively elucidated based on the integrated experimental and computational *** assynthesized pyrrolic-N-rich CDs exhibit a first NIR window absorption centered at 650 nm with high photothermal ***-N concentrations from 1.4%to 11.3%and positions(edge and mid-site)were systematically investigated.A mid-site pyrrolic-N was subsequently generated after the pyrrolic-N concentration more than 10%.Edge-site pyrrolic-N induces a frontier orbital hybridization,reducing bandgap energy,while mid-site pyrrolic-N plays a critical role in inducing a first NIR window absorption owing to their high charge ***,pyrrolic-N-rich CDs inherit a bowl-like topological feature,elevating the CDs’layer thickness as much as 0.71 *** study shed light on the design and optimization of pyrrolic-N on CDs for the first NIR window responsive materials in any biomedical application.

We analyze an algorithm to numerically solve the mean-field optimal control problems by approximating the optimal feedback controls using neural networks with problem specific architectures. We approximate the model by an N-particle system and leverage the exchangeability of the particles to obtain substantial computational efficiency.
