Accurate state estimates are required for increasingly complex systems, to enable, for example, feedback control. However, available state estimation schemes are not necessarily real-time feasible for certain large-scale systems. Therefore, we develop in this paper, a real-time feasible state-estimation scheme for a class of large-scale systems that approximates the steady state Kalman filter. In particular, we focus on systems where the state-vector is the result of discretizing the spatial domain, as typically seen in Partial Differential Equations. In such cases, the correlation between states in the state-vector often have an intuitive interpretation on the spatial domain, which can be exploited to obtain a significant reduction in computational complexity, while still providing accurate state estimates. We illustrate these strengths of our method through a hyperthermia cancer treatment case study. The results of the case study show significant improvements in the computation time, while simultaneously obtaining good state estimates, when compared to Ensemble Kalman filters and Kalman filters using reduced-order models.

Feedforward control with task flexibility for MIMO systems is essential to meet ever-increasing demands on throughput and accuracy. The aim of this paper is to develop a framework for data-driven tuning of rational feedforward controllers in iterative learning control (ILC) for noncommutative MIMO systems. A convex optimization problem in ILC is achieved by rewriting the nonlinear terms in the control scheme as a function of the previous feedforward parameters. A simulation study on an multivariable industrial printer shows that the developed framework converges and achieves significant better performance than direct application of the RBF algorithm using SK-iterations for SISO systems.

The development of new combustion concepts in internal combustion engines requires a better understanding of autoignition characteristics of the bio-based alternative fuels. This study investigates two cases of alternative fuels, namely, a kerosene-type fuel farnesane and an oxygenated fuel, TPGME, and compares those fuels with full-boiling range of fuels with similar cetane number. The homogeneous autoignition and spray ignition characteristics of the selected fuels are studied using a modified Cooperative Fuels Research octane rating engine and a cetane rating instrument, respectively. Farnesane and its full-boiling range counterpart (HRJ8) have similar cetane ratings resulting in comparable combustion heat release, but the overall ignition reactivity of farnesane is stronger than HRJ8 during the pre-ignition process. Results from a constant volume spray combustion chamber showed that the spray process of farnesane and HRJ8 strongly influences the overall ignition delay of each fuel. Despite the similar cetane ratings of TPGME and n-heptane, TPGME shows greater apparent low-temperature oxidation reactivity at low compression ratios in the range from CR 4.0-5.5 than n-heptane. A simplified model focused on the key reaction pathways of low-temperature oxidation of TPGME was used to account for the stronger low-temperature reactivity of TPGME, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Regardless of the similar cetane ratings of the fuels, n-heptane and JP-8/SPK lead to similar total ignition delay times, while TPGME shows the shortest overall ignition delay times in the constant volume combustion chamber.

In this paper, we propose a Feasible Sequential Linear Programming (FSLP) algorithm applied to time-optimal control problems (TOCP) obtained through direct multiple shooting discretization. This method is motivated by TOCP with nonlinear constraints which arise in motion planning of mechatronic systems. The algorithm applies a trust-region globalization strategy ensuring global convergence. For fully determined problems our algorithm provides locally quadratic convergence. Moreover, the algorithm keeps all iterates feasible enabling early termination at suboptimal, feasible solutions. This additional feasibility is achieved by an efficient iterative strategy using evaluations of constraints, i.e., zero-order information. Convergence of the feasibility iterations can be enforced by reduction of the trust-region radius. These feasibility iterations maintain feasibility for general Nonlinear Programs (NLP). Therefore, the algorithm is applicable to general NLPs. We demonstrate our algorithm’s efficiency and the feasibility update strategy on a TOCP of an overhead crane motion planning simulation case.
