Enhancing mechanical durability and flame retardancy in Bamboo-Polypropylene composites with nAl2O3 fillers

Natural fiber-based nanocomposite is an innovative material created recently, widely used in various industries for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and lightweight properties. The study examined the impact of titanium nanoparticles on the mechanical properties, moisture absorption, flammability, and dynamic mechanical characteristics of polypropylene (PP)/Bamboo fiber. Composite materials consisting of PP, Bamboo fiber, and alumina were manufactured using injection molding. The hybrids’ elongation at break (1.70%), tensile strength (TS), and modulus of elasticity (2124 MPa, 43.1 MPa, and 9%, respectively), were enhanced by adding 9% nano aluminum oxide (nAl2O3) nanoparticles to the mix. The clean PP/Bamboo had a modulus of 2189 MPa and bending strength of 39.6 MPa. The PP/Bamboo/Al2O3 composite material showed a modulus of 2805 MPa and a bending strength of 56.7 MPa, an increase of 28.46%. Raised nanoparticle concentration resulted in a significant reduction in water absorption (9.1%) and swelling thickness (2.03%). The n-Al2O3 was incorporated into composites to improve their dynamic mechanical properties, resulting in a loss modulus of 5.02 MPa and a storage modulus of 12.92 MPa. Additionally, it enhanced fire resistance, leading to a combustion rate of 18 mm min-1 and a char residue of 30%. The endurance of the char barrier is greatly affected by the chemical composition and distribution pattern of the mixture. Char shields with increased nAl2O3 content are designed to resist burning and require greater temperatures to break down. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Contactless and Real-time Hand Gesture Recognition using Inductive Proximity Technique for Wrist-worn Wearables

This study proposes a contactless and real-time hand gesture recognition system suitable for smartwatches. The proposed system adopts inductive proximity sensing to collect Mechanomyography (MMG) signals induced by finger-based gestures above the wrist. After the signal processing and feature extraction stages, machine-learning models can be built for gesture classification. Compared with the Electromyography (EMG)-based method generally deployed in the forearm, inductive MMG applies an electromagnetic field to the body surface and is suitable for use on the wrist. Compared to the existing contact methods, such as EMG and accelerometer-based MMG, the inductive MMG method does not require contact with the body surface to collect muscle action signals and can avoid interference from environmental factors such as sweat and dust. The main contributions of this study are (1) a watch-type prototype with inductive MMG sensing technique, including hardware and firmware;(2) a lightweight and efficient signal processing mechanism that can capture the inductive signal characteristics of gestures for the above-mentioned embedded system (i.e., watch-type prototype);and (3) the tempo-spatial feature extraction method to improve the accuracy of gesture recognition. The experiment results show that for six common machine learning models, the gesture recognition accuracy of the proposed system is above 95%, with a maximum of 97.47%. In the briefing control application for verification purposes, the average accuracy of the inductive gesture recognition system can achieve 98.26%, and the average processing time is 14.37 ms. According to the experimental results, the inductive MMG system can provide a feasible gesture recognition solution for wrist-worn wearable devices. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

By integrating smart grid technology with home energy management systems, households can monitor and optimise their energy consumption. This allows for more efficient use of energy resources, reducing waste and lowering energy bills. In this manuscript, a hybrid approach is proposed for smart grid home energy management with microgrids and day-ahead energy forecasts. The proposed control approach combines the Circle Search (CS) algorithm and Recalling-Enhanced Recurrent Neural Network (RERNN). Commonly it is named as CS-RERNN technique. The novelty of this paper is to optimise energy consumption and production within microgrids, thereby contributing to the overall efficiency of the smart grid system. The proposed method is used to reduce the electricity cost, peak-to-average ratio (PAR), and maximising consumer comfort. Energy management is performed based on the CS algorithm. A smart home connected to the external power grid (PG) is managed by the proposed method. Here, load demand is predicted by using RERNN. By then, the performance of the proposed method is implemented in MATLAB platform. The proposed method shows a high efficiency of 96%, and 22 $ of low electricity bill cost compared with other existing methods such as Particle swarm optimisation (PSO), Cuckoo search algorithm (CSA, and Border collie Optimisation (BCO). ©, Engineers Australia.

Kernel-based Actor-Critic Learning Framework for Autonomous Brain Control on Trajectory

Reinforcement learning (RL)-based Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs) hold promise for restoring motor functions in paralyzed individuals. These interfaces interpret neural activity to control external devices through trial-and-error. In brain control (BC) tasks, subjects control the device continuously moving in space by imagining their own limb movement, in which the subject can change direction at any position before reaching the target. Such multi-step BC tasks span a large space both in neural state and over a sequence of movements. However, conventional RL decoders face challenges in efficient exploration and limited guidance from delayed rewards. In this paper, we propose a kernel-based actor-critic learning framework for multi-step BC tasks. Our framework integrates continuous trajectory control (actor) and internal continuous state value estimation (critic) from medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC) activity. We evaluate our algorithm's performance in a BC three-lever discrimination task using data from two rats, comparing it to a kernel RL decoder with internal binary rewards and delayed external rewards. Experimental results show that our approach achieves faster convergence, shorter target-acquisition time, and shorter distances to targets. These findings highlight the potential of our algorithm for clinical applications in multi-step brain control tasks. © 2016 IEEE.

Thyroid disorders are increasingly prevalent, making early detection crucial for reducing mortality and complications. Accurate prediction of disease progression and understanding the interplay of clinical features are essential for effective diagnosis and treatment. Our study addresses these challenges by employing a standard machine learning model, enhanced with comprehensive clinical feature analysis and an ensemble learning technique. By leveraging machine learning, we can identify key risk factors and improve diagnostic accuracy. To achieve optimal prediction outcomes, we evaluated seventeen machine learning models and implemented an Ensemble ML classifier using a hard voting strategy. Class balancing techniques, particularly random oversampling, significantly improved classification performance. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms existing methods, achieving 100% sensitivity and 99.72% accuracy using the XGBoost algorithm and SelectKBest feature selection. By addressing feature reduction and high class-imbalance, the ensemble ML classifier with hard voting proves more effective in handling classification challenges. © The Author(s) 2025.

Multistage Parameter Optimization for Rule Generation for Multistage Manufacturing Processes

Defects in multistage manufacturing processes (MMPs) decrease profitability and product quality. Therefore, MMP parameter optimization within a range is essential to prevent defects, achieve dynamic accuracy, and accommodate manufacturing tolerances. However, existing studies only focused on optimization in a single manufacturing stage of MMP, such as the weaving stage in fabric manufacturing. Furthermore, existing methods optimize for a single value rather than a range. Thus, we propose a novel approach called multistage parameter optimization for rule generation (MPORG) to prevent the occurrence of defects in MMPs. In the proposed approach, key parameters are identified and optimized to a range for each defect type. Subsequently, the optimized parameters for each defect type are merged. Our approach is novel because it optimizes parameters to a range rather than a single value, allowing engineers to select a value in this range according to their experience. It also provides results that are specific to a product type. Our approach outperformed the classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm and multiresponse CART method in experiments on an empirical fabric manufacturing dataset that we gathered. The experimental results demonstrated that the MPORG approach can prevent the occurrence of single-type or multiple-type defects by approximately 89%. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Automated reading of license plate and its detection is a crucial component of the competent transportation system. Toll payment and parking management e-payment systems may benefit from this software’s features. License plate detection and identification algorithms abound, and each has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. computer vision has advanced rapidly in terms of new breakthroughs and techniques thanks to the emergence and proliferation of deep learning principles across several branches of AI. The practice of automating the monitoring process in traffic management, parking management, and police surveillance has become much more effective thanks to the development of Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR). Even though license plate recognition (LPR) is a technology that is extensively utilized and has been developed, there is still a significant amount of work to be done before it can achieve its full potential. In the last several years, there have been substantial advancements in both the scientific community’s methodology and its level of efficiency. In this era of deep learning, there have been numerous developments and techniques established for LPR, and the purpose of this research is to review and examine those developments and approaches. In light of this, the authors of this study suggest a four-stage technique to automated license plate detection and identification (ALPDR), which includes, image pre-processing, license plate extraction, character segmentation, and character recognition. And the first three phases are known as "extraction," "preprocessing," and "segmentation," and each of these processes has been shown to benefit from its own unique technique. Cloud Computing is a rapidly growing emerging technology in the IT environment. Internet-based computing provides services like sharing resources e.g. network, storage, applications and software through the Internet. Cloud customers can access these services according to their need and pay only for those services which they utilize. Almost every industrial sector like banking, retail, education, healthcare, manufacturing and businesses is adopting cloud techniques within their enterprise either privately or in sharing with other enterprises. However, many security issues must be resolved because they are a barrier in adopting this fast-growing technology. This paper reviews various threats on cloud computing like distributed denial of service attack, spoofing attacks (e.g. ARP Spoofing, IP Spoofing, DNS Spoofing), man-in-the middle attack, data loss, data breach, reused IP address attack, malicious insiders, insecure interfaces & APIs etc. These security issues prevent users from adopting cloud services. This study presents various detection and prevention methods to address cloud security concerns. The effectiveness of each strategy is then analyzed based on its attributes, benefits and drawbacks.
