The Internet and computers did not invent or even cause privacy issues. The issues existed long before the creation of computers and Internet. The existence of the Internet, computers and large data storage make it possible to collect, process and transmit large volumes of data, including personal data. In this paper, we shall study the privacy from following two different views, namely legal framework and computer security model, and attempt to identify the difference between them. Because of the difference, we further argue that the current computer security model is not sufficient to support the privacy requirements in the legal framework. We propose a computer model ¿privacy reference monitor¿ to handle those unsupported requirements. The design of the privacy reference monitor is privacy policy neutral with a small number of functions. With minimal functionalities, we believe that it is possible to implement a verifiable privacy reference monitor.

Distributed node scheduling method for wireless sensor networks

For m-covered and connected sensor networks, a new distributed node scheduling algorithm is designed, which can allocate all the nodes in the sensor network into k (k ≤ m) different groups without requiring location information. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the newly proposed algorithm has better node scheduling performance and can prolong the lifetime of the sensor networks more effectively than the traditional random-based node scheduling scheme. Traditional content management systems (CMS) for digital television (TV) services usually attempt to provide friendly user interfaces with some content information for attracting new subscriptions. However, the searching and subscription functions provide limited abilities for user requirement elicitation and matchmaking of contents. With the help of ontology, this paper purposes an agent-based content management system for digital TV services. Not only users can retrieve matched contents effectively, service providers can also obtain multi-level analysis of user behaviors and achieve cross-sale of contents and services. We demonstrate the flexibility of our approach with a sample ontology and system architecture.

In the business world, financial institutions, like banks and investment firms, heavily rely on technology to manipulate daily operations and support business. Many more business processes have now become automated and require procedures to be approved. For example, when providing business services liked personal / corporate loans, mortgage, or Letter of Credit (LC), a customer is required to submit information within their applications; whereas, the service provider has to perform complicated approval procedures, involving different departments or even external parties. In this paper, we discuss how a credit approval system (CAS) handles the workflow of such business processes. The system is extensible to contemporary technologies including business process execution language (BPEL), asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), and Java server face (JSF) in order to coordinate related parties through the Internet as well as to facilitate the operations and communications with different levels of staff in the Intranet. Our experiences and design characteristics will be further implemented into a system designed for a global financial firm.

Asynchronous motor is widely used in every field and department of people's daily life and in industry and agriculture. Electricity consumption of asynchronous motor is the main asynchronous motor. Now the whole society is calling for energy-saving and environment-protection. It is important to improve AC motor's energy efficiency level for energy-saving, environment-protection and fund-saving. The manual computation of stray load loss in electric motor is very complex and has low precision so the stray load loss test system for three-phase asynchronous motor was designed. It discussed the application of linear regression analysis method in stray loss analysis in detail, and the computation was implemented by MATLAB, and a DLL was generated, last the VC program does data acquisition and calls the DLL to fulfill computation.

Scientific applications like neuroscience data analysis are usually compute and data-intensive. With the use of globally distributed resources and suitable middlewares, we can achieve much shorter execution time, distribute compute and storage load, and add greater flexibility to the execution of these scientific applications than we could ever achieve in a single compute *** this paper, we present the processing of image registration (IR) for functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) studies on global grids. We characterize the application, list its requirements and transform it to a workflow. We then execute the application on Gridpsila5000 platform and present extensive performance results. We show that the IR application can have 1) significantly improved makespan, 2) distribution of compute and storage load among resources used, and 3) flexibility when executing multiple times on global Grids.

Trust-based solutions provide some form of payment to peers to encourage good behavior. The problem with trust management systems is that they require prior knowledge to work. In other words, peers are vulnerable to attack if they do not have knowledge or correct knowledge of other peers in a trust management system. Therefore, considering only trust is inadequate when a decision is made to identify the best set of peers to utilize. In order to solve the problem, we propose a distributed decision-making mechanism for wireless P2P networks based on game theory and relevant trust mechanisms in which we incorporate the element of trust and risk into a single mode. The main idea of our mechanism is to use utility function to express the relationship between benefits and costs of peers, and then make the decision based on expected utility as well as risk attitude in a fully distributed fashion. The unique feature of our mechanism is that it not only helps a peer to select its partners, but also mitigates vulnerabilities in trust-based mechanisms. Through analysis and experiments, we believe our approach is useful for peers to make the decision regarding who to interact with. In addition, it is also a good starting point for exploring tradeoffs among risk, trust and utility.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's department of computer science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from Human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems, Experimental Design for Real- World Systems, Human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain. The Learning by Reading and Learning to Read symposium explored two aspects of making natural language texts semantically accessible to, and processable by, machines. The Social Semantic
