The realization of new distributed and heterogeneous software applications is a challenge that software engineers have to face. Logic programming and multi-agent systems can play a very effective role in the rapid prototyping of new software products. This paper proposes a general approach to the prototyping of complex and distributed applications modelled as multi-agent systems and outlines the autonomous research experiences of different research groups from which the approach originates. All the experiences have logic programming as the common foundation and deal with different aspects of the problem: integration of heterogeneous data and reasoning systems, animation of formal specifications and the development of agent-based software. The final goal is joining these diverse experiences into a unique open framework.

There is currently an enormous interest in the concept of software architecture, largely induced by the concept of architectural patterns first introduced by the architect Christopher Alexander (Alexander, 1979;Alexander et. al, 1977). We feel that some of the earlier work on software and system architectures has not benefited sufficiently from a deeper understanding of the complexity of the act of architecting in its home discipline: the built environment. This has lead to a confusion between fine-grain constructional mechanisms and techniques, and the overall, coarse-grain, software architectures that should in some way reflect original problem domains. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

As the amount of data transmitted over a network increases and high bandwidth applications requiring point to multipoint communications like videoconferencing, distributed database management or cooperative work become widespread, it becomes very important to optimize network resources. One such optimization is multicast tree generation. The problem of generating a minimum cost multicast tree given the network topology and costs associated with the connecting links can be modelled as a Steiner tree problem which is NP-complete. Much work has been done in the direction of obtaining near-optimal multicast trees when the objective is only to minimize the cost. However, many real time applications such as videoconferencing require that data be sent within prespecified delay limits in order to avoid problems such as anachronism and lack of synchronization. We deal with the delay-bounded cost-optimal multicast tree (DBCPAT) generation problem. Specifically, we discuss a closely related problem which is to find a delay-bounded cost-optimal path (DBCP) between a specified source and destination node. Such a path can be used as a starting point to solve the DBCMT. We present an exact solution to the DBCP which is based on the branch-and-bound paradigm. We also propose a heuristic technique to solve the DBCP using the principle of evolutionary computing. The results obtained using the two techniques are compared for several large networks.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

A distributed computing system consists of heterogeneous computing devices, communication networks, operating system services, and applications. As organisations move toward distributed computing environments, there will be a corresponding growth in distributed applications central to the enterprise. The design, development, and management of distributed applications presents many difficult challenges. As these systems grow to hundreds or even thousands of devices and similar or greater magnitude of software components, it will become increasingly difficult to manage them without appropriate support tools and frameworks. Further, the design and deployment of additional applications and services will be, at best, ad hoc without modelling tools and timely data on which to base design and configuration decisions. This paper presents a framework for management of distributed applications and systems. The framework is based on a set of common management services that support management activities. The services include monitoring, control, configuration, and data repository services. A prototype system built on the framework is described that implements and integrates management applications providing visualisation, fault location, performance monitoring and modelling, and configuration management. The prototype also demonstrates how various management services can be implemented.

Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) are developed to contain substantial elements of human knowledge and expertise in a well-defined domain, and use these to support user or expert tasks. Issues related to the social and organisational contexts of these systems are widely acknowledged to be particularly critical to their success. However, methodology proposals usually stop short of adequately handling soft and unstructured data that frame the contexts of use. The handling of qualitative data needs to be done in a way that directly impinges on the wider Knowledge-Based System engineering processes and decisions. In this paper, we discuss the nature of context-sensitive issues, and describe a methodological approach for resolving them through the rigorous analysis of qualitative data, using a methodology which is based upon the Grounded Theory method from the social sciences.

Although several access control policies can be devised for controlling access to information, all existing authorization models, and the corresponding enforcement mechanisms, are based on a specific policy (usually the closed policy). As a consequence, although different policy choices are possible in theory, in practice only a specific policy can be actually applied within a given system. However, protection requirements within a system can vary dramatically, and no single policy may simultaneously satisfy them *** this paper we present a flexible authorization manager (FAM) that can enforce multiple access control policies within a single, unified system. FAM is based on a language through which users can specify authorizations and access control policies to be applied in controlling execution of specific actions on given objects. We formally define the language and properties required to hold on the security specifications and prove that this language can express all security specifications. Furthermore, we show that all programs expressed in this language (called FAM/CAM-programs) are also guaranteed to be consistent (i.e., no conflicting access decisions occur) and CAM-programs are complete (i.e., every access is either authorized or denied). We then illustrate how several well-known protection policies proposed in the literature can be expressed in the FAM/CAM language and how users can customize the access control by specifying their own policies. The result is an access control mechanism which is flexible, since different access control policies can all coexist in the same data system, and extensible, since it can be augmented with any new policy a specific application or user may require.

In this paper we describe an implementation of some kinds of parallel genetic algorithms on the PVM,Parallel Virtual Machine, a portable parallel environment. We give details of a genetic algorithm running On many small subpopulations with an occasional identification and exchange of their useful information among subpopulations by means of message-passing functions of PVM. In this work, experiments were done to compare the parallel genetic algorithm and traditional sequential genetic algorithms.
