As several studies have shown, predicting credit risk is still a major concern for the financial services industry and is receiving a lot of scholarly interest. This area of study is crucial because it aids financial organizations in determining the probability that borrowers would default, which has a direct bearing on lending choices and risk management tactics. Despite the progress made in this domain, there is still a substantial knowledge gap concerning consumer actions that take place prior to the filing of credit card applications. The objective of this study is to predict customer responses to mail campaigns and assess the likelihood of default among those who engage. This research employs advanced machine learning techniques, specifically logistic regression and XGBoost, to analyze consumer behavior and predict responses to direct mail campaigns. By integrating different data preprocessing strategies, including imputation and binning, we enhance the robustness and accuracy of our predictive models. The results indicate that XGBoost consistently outperforms logistic regression across various metrics, particularly in scenarios using categorical binning and custom imputation. These findings suggest that XGBoost is particularly effective in handling complex data structures and provides a strong predictive capability in assessing credit risk. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Predictive Process Monitoring (PPM) aims to predict the future state of running process instances to enable timely interventions to mitigate potential risks. As one of the most fundamental tasks in PPM, process remaining time prediction focuses on preventing timeout occurrences. While various deep learning-based approaches have been developed for this purpose, they often rely on pre-established static prediction models and struggle to maintain accurate predictions when the process undergoes dynamic changes, such as an expanding sales channels. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes an incremental process remaining time prediction framework by continuously updating the prediction model based on an incremental event log. Specifically, a feature selection strategy is first introduced to extract effective features from event logs. Leveraging effective features can significantly improve the prediction quality by capturing the changes in process information. Then, three incremental log-based updating mechanisms, including period-based updating, quantity-based updating, and concept-drift-based updating, along with a reconstruction strategy, are proposed to dynamically adjust the prediction model in response to business changes. Finally, LSTM, Transformer, and Auto-encoder models are adapted and integrated into the proposed framework. The approach has been implemented and publicly released. Experimental evaluation using nine real-life event logs demonstrate that the proposed framework and its three instantiations (i.e., LSTM-based, Transformer-based, and Auto-encoder-based ones) outperform state-of-the-art techniques in terms of prediction accuracy. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

Semen quality assessment is a very important tool for the timely detection and treatment of infertility disorders. Many artificial intelligence methods for sperm image analysis have emerged in recent years. Sperm detection in sperm microscopy is the first step in semen quality assessment. However, the acquisition of sperm electron microscopy images can produce a variety of different background lighting situations. The performance of established methods is susceptible to changes in background illumination. Therefore, a sperm detection method with heterogeneous Laplacian distribution noise background modeling (HLDNBM) is proposed. In this paper the method uses background illumination surface fitting to eliminate the effect of illumination in a single sperm image, and realizes the segmentation of sperm head and sperm tail with different grayscale by upper and lower segmentation threshold surfaces to achieve complete sperm image segmentation and multi-target detection in a single image. This method effectively avoids the degradation of target detection performance caused by sudden changes in illumination in other background modeling methods. Moreover, this method shows strong adaptability for images with different lighting backgrounds, and is friendly to small datasets as well. The experimental results show that the accuracy and sensitivity of the algorithm for sperm detection in images with different grayscale characteristics are very promising, with high universality and robustness. © 2023 IEEE.

In Search of Excellence: SHOA as a Competitive Shrike Optimization Algorithm for Multimodal Problems

In this paper, a swarm intelligence optimization algorithm is proposed as the Shrike Optimization Algorithm (SHOA). Many creatures living in a group and surviving for the next generation randomly search for food;they follow the best one in the swarm, called swarm intelligence. Swarm-based algorithms are designed to mimic creatures’ behaviors, but in the multi-modal problem competition, they cannot find optimal solutions in some difficult cases. The main inspiration for the proposed algorithm is taken from the swarming behaviors of shrike birds in nature. The shrike birds are migrating from their territory to survive. However, the SHOA mimics the surviving behavior of shrike birds for living, adaptation, and breeding. Two parts of optimization exploration and exploitation are designed by modelling shrike breeding and searching for foods to feed nestlings until they get ready to fly and live independently. This paper is a mathematical model for the SHOA to perform optimization. The SHOA benchmarked 19 well-known mathematical test functions, 10 from CEC-2019, and 12 from CEC-2022 most recent test functions, a total of 41 competitive mathematical test functions benchmarked and four real-world engineering problems with different conditions, both constrained and unconstrained. The statistical results obtained from the Wilcoxon sum ranking and Fridman test show that SHOA has a significant statistical superiority in handling the test benchmarks compared to competitor algorithms in multi-modal problems. The 12-lead ECG only has 8 independent ECG leads, which leads to diagnostic redundancy when using all 12 leads for heart arrhythmias classification. We have previously developed a deep learning (DL)-based computer-interpreted ECG (CIE) approach to identify an optimal 4-lead ECG subset for classifying heart arrhythmias. However, the clinical diagnostic criteria of cardiac arrhythmia types are often lead-specific, so this study is going to explore the selection of arrhythmia-based ECG-lead subsets rather than one general optimal ECG-lead subset, which could improve the classification performance for the CIE. The DL-based CIE model previously developed was used to learn 4 common types of heart arrhythmias (LBBB, RBBB, AF, and I-AVB) for identifying corresponding optimal ECG-lead subsets. A public dataset that splits into training (approx. 70%), validation (approx. 15%), and test (approx. 15%) sets from the PhysioNet Cardiology Challenge 2020 was used to explore the study. The results demonstrated that the DL-based CIE model identified an optimal ECG-lead subset for each arrhythmia: I, II, aVR, aVL, V1, V3, and V5 for I-AVB; I, II, aVR, and V3 for AF; I, II, aVR, aVF, V1, V3, and V4 for LBBB; and I, II, III, aVR, V1, V4, and V6 for RBBB. For each arrhythmia classification, the DL-based CIE model using the optimal ECG-lead subset significantly outperformed the model using the full 12-lead ECG set on the validation set and on the external test *** results support the hypothesis that using an optimal ECG-lead subset instead of the full 12-lead ECG set can improve the classification performance of a specific arrhythmia when using the DL-based CIE *** Relevance— Using an arrhythmia-based optimal ECG-lead subset, the classification performance of a deep-learning-based model can be achieved without loss of accuracy in comparison with the full 12-lead set (p<0.05).

Privacy-preserving and secure data sharing are critical for medical image analysis while maintaining accuracy and minimizing computational overhead are also crucial. Applying existing deep neural networks (DNNs) to encrypted medical data is not always easy and often compromises performance and security. To address these limitations, this research introduces a secure framework consisting of a learnable encryption method based on block-pixel operation to encrypt the data and subsequently integrate it with the Vision Transformer (ViT). The proposed framework ensures data privacy and security by creating unique scrambling patterns per key, providing robust performance against leading bit attacks and minimum difference attacks. Gray code, a voltage-level-to-data-bit translation scheme, is widely used in QLC SSDs. However, it causes the four data bits in QLC to exhibit significantly different read and write performance with up to 8 × latency variation, severely impacting the worst-case performance of QLC SSDs. This paper presents BDP, a novel Bi-Directional Programming scheme. Based on a fixed Gray code, BDP combines both the normal (forward) and reverse programming directions to enable runtime programming direction arbitration. Experimental results show that BDP can effectively improve the read and write performance of SSD compared to representative schemes.

EBCFL: An Efficient BlockChain-based Federated Learning Framework for Internet of Vehicles

Federated Learning (FL) can train a shared model while protecting vehicle data privacy, which has significant advantages in improving driving safety and efficiency. However, there are still many challenges in applying FL to Internet of Vehicles (IoV). First, the varying computing capabilities of moving vehicles result in slow convergence speed due to underperforming vehicles. Second, malicious vehicles may tamper with model parameters before uploading them to the central server, which is itself vulnerable to single-point failure. To solve the above challenges, we design an efficient and decentralized blockchain FL framework (Efficient BlockChain-based Federated Learning Framework, EBCFL). This framework effectively prevents possible malicious behaviors in the vehicular network nodes and improves the efficiency of FL through a well-designed security verification mechanism. The experimental results show that EBCFL outperforms other schemes in terms of average test accuracy and average total time cost, indicating that EBCFL significantly improves the learning efficiency while bearing an acceptable additional time cost for blockchain communication, demonstrating its strong ability to guard against malicious behaviours and ensure robustness. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Medical imagery has been increasingly used in diagnosing and treating various diseases, leading to advances in healthcare. While humans usually lead the qualitative interpretation of visual features, Automated Classification of Medical Images Using Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) has gained traction for accurate image classification. CNNs are a type of deep learning algorithm that attempts to mimic the structure of the human brain and are ideal for image classification due to their convolution layers that can detect patterns within the image. These convolution layers enable the networks to learn the characteristics of the data through a series of convolution and pooling operations. Additionally, they can rapidly identify relationships and patterns within the dataset and extract features from the input image, thus allowing a more accurate classification. With the increasing availability of medical imaging data, advancements in the field of ML/AI has enabled the use of CNNs for automated medical image classification, helping clinicians to diagnose diseases accurately with less time and effort. ©2024 IEEE.

In text mining problems, text classification is one of the common tasks. Several real-world document classification involves imbalanced text data. This research investigates the behavior of Support Vector Machines classifiers on textual news data. The set of features is developed using the Count Vectorizer and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency to train and test the model. We have observed the quality of the SVM classification algorithm with both linear and polynomial kernel on benchmark UCI News datasets: Reuters. The result shows that SVM with linear performs better and achieves 94.10% accuracy where SVM with polynomial kernel achieves 93.28% accuracy on the benchmark dataset. © 2022 IEEE.
