Retinopathy represents a group of retinal diseases that causes severe visual impairments and even blindness. Many researchers have publicly released datasets containing fundus or optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans to screen retinal diseases like macular edema (ME) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These datasets also contain clinical markings to analyze the retinal layers and retinal lesions within normal and abnormal pathologies. However, to the best of our knowledge, no dataset provides the clinically graded fundus and OCT images reflecting the geographic AMD, neovascular AMD, acute central serous retinopathy (CSR), chronic CSR, centrally involved DME (ci-DME), and glaucomatous pathologies. Furthermore, the majority of the publicly available OCT datasets are acquired through Spectralis Machines, which limits the thorough evaluation of autonomous frameworks to screen retinal pathologies irrespective of the scanner specifications. To overcome these challenges, we present a novel dataset containing composite fundus and OCT scans of each patient, along with detailed annotations for extracting the retinal layers and retinal lesions. Also, contrary to its competitors, the proposed dataset is acquired through Topcon 3D OCT 2000 machine that can be utilized for training (or evaluating) any autonomous frameworks to give the lesion-aware screening and severity grading of the above-mentioned retinal diseases as per the clinical standards. Moreover, in this paper, we are also releasing the retinal annotation software alongside the proposed dataset. This software can help clinicians in quickly marking both fundus and OCT scans, which can be saved later on in any image format. Overall, the proposed dataset contains 9,268 OCT scans and 180 fundus scans from 105 subjects depicting healthy, ci-DME, geographic AMD, neovascular AMD, acute CSR, chronic CSR, and glaucomic pathologies. © 2022 IEEE.

In today's connected and data-driven world, networks and digital systems need to be protected from malicious attacks. The effectiveness of conventional Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) in recognizing and impeding novel threats and intricate methodologies has its limits. This study introduces a new method for improving network security by using deep learning techniques in the design and development of an intrusion detection system (IDS). The suggested Intrusion Detection System uses deep learning techniques, specifically Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), to identify and react to known and new security threats. Data can be taught to be encoded into a lower-dimensional representation and then decoded back into its original form using autoencoders (AEs). Autoencoders are a cutting-edge intrusion detection system that can lower false positives and raise overall detection accuracy because of their capacity to automatically learn from and adjust to the ever-changing threat landscape. They enhance computer networks capacity to spot irregularities and possible security threats. With the deep learning model obtaining a high accuracy of 99% in real-world threat detection, the results show that deep learning is effective in developing intrusion detection systems.

In order to obtain good medical image segmentation results, existing studies usually extract multi-scale features or design special attention to obtain global and local information of images. However, the above methods are very cumbersome or have a high computational burden. Theoretically, global and local contexts are used to locate objects and refine their contours respectively. Therefore, from a novel points prediction perspective, this work adopts a convolutional model and employs the deep supervision method to assist segmentation by predicting points of the lesion location and boundary. Specifically, we use two points prediction branches to generate location and boundary heatmaps, which implicitly locate lesions and refine contours. Furthermore, in order to train the multi-task model effectively, this work proposes a simple supervision signals design principle to guide deep supervision, so that the training of the auxiliary branch does not conflict with the main task branch. It is worth noting that our simple and end-to-end approach achieves the state-of-the-art results without the need for post-processing. Extensive experiments on three challenging medical image segmentation benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance.

This article presents a study on the effectiveness of electrocoagulation (EC) for the removal of azo dyes from wastewater. The analysis was performed using a combination of statistical methods, including density estimation, correlation analysis, and deep learning for electrocoagulation performance prediction. The results showed that electrocoagulation was able to effectively remove azo dyes from the wastewater, considering the energy consumption and the mass of flocs being important factors in the process. Deep Learning (DL) is used to build our predictive model using the datasets collected during the experimentation stage. Overall, the findings suggest that electrocoagulation is a promising technique for the treatment of wastewater containing azo dyes, and that the use of statistical and machine learning methods can aid in the optimization of the process. © 2024 The Authors. Object detection in adverse weather conditions, such as dense fog, poses a critical challenge for computer vision systems in applications like autonomous driving, surveillance, and robotics. Image quality degradation due to light scattering and absorption diminishes the performance of even the most advanced models trained on clear-weather datasets. This paper uses the Foggy Cityscapes dataset to evaluate YOLOv8, a cutting-edge object detection model, under extreme foggy conditions. We utilize YOLOv8's sophisticated architecture, featuring the CSPDarknet backbone and Path Aggregation Network (PANet), for efficient feature extraction and multi-scale detection. Our approach incorporates image enhancement techniques and data augmentation to mitigate the effects of fog on feature visibility. We conduct a comprehensive performance assessment using metrics like mean average precision (mAP) precision-recall curves to evaluate the model's robustness and reliability. Additionally, we benchmark YOLOv8 against previous YOLO versions, detailing improvements and trade-offs in detection speed and accuracy. We also propose a hybrid framework combining multi-task learning to improve image quality and object detection in low-visibility scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Interactive dynamic influence diagrams (I-DIDs) are a general framework for multiagent sequential decision making under uncertainty. Due to the model complexity, a significant amount of research has been invested into solving the model through various types of either exact or approximate algorithms. However, there is no tool that allows users to specify the algorithm parameters and visualise the model solutions. In this demo, we develop an interactive I-DID system that implements most of the state-of-art I-DID algorithms and develops a new type of algorithms based on evolutionary computation. In particular, we propose a multi-population genetic algorithm for solving the I-DID models and automate the generation of behavioural models in the solutions. This demo will facilitate the I-DID research development and practical applications, and elicit a new wave of I-DID solutions based on evolutionary algorithms. © 2022 International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (***). The service delivery has lately witnessed strides in the form of paradigm shifts from conventional logistics to drone-oriented supply chain to conserve ecosystem. The use of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for package deliveries offer enhanced accessibility, flexibility, efficiency, speed, safety, and even few environmental gains. However, the drones can come across various security hazards while communicating with ground installations on open channels including physical capture attack, privacy infringement, and so on. Thus, earnest endeavors are needed to fix those security challenges in applications related to drone communications. To address these problems, an efficient authenticated key agreement technique, drone access control scheme for last mile delivery (DAC-MD) is suggested for user-drone interactions in IoD environment that help the participating entities in developing a mutually agreed session key for securing subsequent communication interactions. The proposed scheme is proved using automated ProVerif tool as well as analyzed by using formal analysis based on RoR random oracle model. The comparative analysis against recently presented known studies reveals that our scheme not only carries comparable properties in terms of security and privacy, but also low computational and communication costs. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In the past decade, significant strides in deep learning have led to numerous groundbreaking applications. Despite these advancements, the understanding of the high generalizability of deep learning, especially in such an over-parametrized space, remains limited. For instance, in deep neural networks (DNNs), their internal representations, decision-making mechanism, absence of overfitting in an over-parametrized space, superior generalizability, etc., remain less understood. Successful applications are often considered as empirical rather than scientific achievement. This paper delves into the loss landscape of DNNs through the lens of spin glass in statistical physics, a system characterized by a complex energy landscape with numerous metastable states, as a novel perspective in understanding how DNNs work. We investigated the loss landscape of single hidden layer neural networks activated by Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) function, and introduced several protocols to examine the analogy between DNNs and spin glass. Specifically, we used (1) random walk in the parameter space of DNNs to unravel the structures in their loss landscape;(2) a permutation-interpolation protocol to study the connection between copies of identical regions in the loss landscape due to the permutation symmetry in the hidden layers;(3) hierarchical clustering to reveal the hierarchy among trained solutions of DNNs, reminiscent of the so-called Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) phenomenon (i.e. the Parisi solution) in spin glass;(4) finally, we examine the relationship between the ruggedness of DNN’s loss landscape and its generalizability, showing an improvement of flattened minima. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

On workflow scheduling for latency-sensitive edge computing applications

With the rapid proliferation of edge computing-based solutions, many edge computing applications use the cloud for data processing and analysis. However, latency-sensitive applications have low latency requirements and can be very bandwidth hungry, so processing their collected data through cloud servers is not efficient and cost-effective. For example, traffic management and health condition monitoring applications, require real-time data processing at the network edge to respond immediately to unexpected events. These applications are typically executed as workflows with dependent tasks that require careful scheduling to allocate the appropriate resources to the tasks so that the execution is done in a way that satisfies the users’ target functions. In this work, we evaluate some traditional scheduling heuristics for the execution of workflow tasks in an edge-computing scenario. Our goal is to compare their performance in terms of execution time and cost and show that these heuristics, previously used in scheduling in the context of cloud environments, can also be used in edge computing scenarios. The results show that the MinMin and PSO scheduling algorithms offer the best results with regard to execution time and cost.
