The paper uses a simple fitness function as the evaluation standard for an individual or a path. This is able to reduce the computation consumption, but it still cannot avoid of customizing genetic operators. In most cases, thus, the optimal solution could be found out in the lower evolution generations. The simulation study shows that this method is suitable for mobile robot path planning.

This paper discusses signal integrity (SI) issues and signalling techniques for Through Silicon Via (TSV) interconnects in 3-D Integrated Circuits (ICs). Field-solver extracted parasitics of TSVs have been employed in Spice simulations to investigate the effect of each parasitic component on performance metrics such as delay and crosstalk and identify a reduced-order electrical model that captures all relevant effects. We show that in dense TSV structures voltage-mode (VM) signalling does not lend itself to achieving high data-rates, and that current-mode (CM) signalling is more effective for high throughput signalling as well as jitter reduction. Data rates, energy consumption and coupled noise for the different signalling modes are extracted.

Wireless Sensor Networks for Home Appliance Energy Management based on ZigBee technology is introduced in this paper. The aim of this research is to develop a real-time, low-cost, low power consumption and better reliable system for monitoring home appliance. Based on system analysis, hardware architecture design and underlying software development are presented. Experiment testing result demonstrates that this system is suitable for home appliance energy management and it makes electric scheduling and management more convenient and flexible. Moreover, it can be extended to a whole building or community.

The accuracy and efficiency of cost estimation methodology for web-based application is very important for software development as it would be able to assist the management team to estimate the cost. Furthermore, it will ensure that the development of cost is within the planned budget and provides a fundamental motivation towards the development of web-based application project. The literature review reveals that COCOMO II provides accurate result because more variables are considered including reuse parameter. The parameter is one of the essential variables in estimating the cost in web-based application development. This research investigates the feasibility to combine and implement COCOMO II and expert judgment technique in a tool called WebCost. In estimating a cost, the tool considers all variables in COCOMO II and requires expert judgment to key-in the input of the variables such as project size, project type, cost adjustment factor and cost driven factor. Developed in JAVA, WebCost is proven able to estimate cost and generate its estimation result. The usability evaluation conducted had shown that WebCost is usable when compared with other tools, it has its own advantages. WebCost is evidence suitable for everyone especially the project managers, software practitioners or software engineering student in handling the cost estimation tasks.

The delivery of IP packets to a set of elements lying within a designated geographical area, also known as geocasting, is an important aspect in vehicular networks. Geocast messages can be used, for instance, to warn drivers about road conditions (e.g., weather hazards) and therefore prevent accidents. In order for geocasting to work on the Internet, IP addresses must be associated with geographical coordinates, either temporary (vehicles in transit on a road) or permanently (roadside units along the road). However, finding IP nodes within specified geographical areas is still an open issue, even though several proposals have been made. It is well-known that the DoubleMinOver classifier as an extendibility of MinOver was developed to provide a maximum margin solution with a bias. But, it can be found that the DoubleMinOver algorithm only classifies the vector pattern and fails to work in the pattern represented with the second-order tensor. In this paper, we propose a novel DoubleMinOver classifier named STDoubleMinOver that can directly classify the second-order tensor pattern. Compared with the existing DoubleMinOver with only one weight w, the proposed STDoubleMinOver induces two weight vectors u and v so as to deal with the second-order tensor. The experiments here have demonstrated that the proposed STDoubleMinOver has a superior classification to the vectorized DoubleMinOver.

One of the major challenges in developing autonomous systems is to make them able to recognize and categorize objects robustly. However, the appearance-based algorithms that are widely employed for robot perception do not explore the functionality of objects, described in terms of their affordances. These affordances (e.g., manipulation, grasping) are discriminative for object categories and are important cues for reliable robot performance in everyday environments. In this paper, we propose a strategy for object recognition that integrates both visual appearance and grasp affordance features. Following previous work, we hypothesize that additional grasp information improves object recognition, even if we reconstruct the grasp modality from visual features using a mapping function. We considered two different representations for the grasp modality: (1) motor information of the hand posture while grasping and (2) a more general grasp affordance descriptor. Using a multi-modal classifier we show that having real grasp information significantly boost object recognition. This improvement is preserved, although to a lesser extent, if the grasp modality is reconstructed using the mapping function.
