This paper presents an architecture for context-aware Ubiquitous Robotics applications, where mobile robots cooperate with intelligent environments to fulfill their tasks. Specifically, the work is focused on distributed knowledge representation issues and context assessment strategies, and introduces a technique for on-line context recognition in highly dynamic environments. Experimental validation, performed in a civillian hospital building, is described and discussed.

Currently, it is noticed that users tend to choose shorter password as their authentication which can be easily attacked. Biometric technologies such as fingerprint scanning, voice authentication, face recognition, signature, hand geometry and iris recognition is now playing an important role especially in application related to security issue. In this work, we present an approach to generate a unique and more secure cryptographic key from iris template. The iris images are processed to produce iris template or code to be utilized for the encryption and decryption tasks. AES cryptography algorithm are employed to encrypt and decrypt the identity data. Distance metric such as hamming distance and Euclidean distance are used for the template matching identification process. Experimental results show that this system can obtain a higher security with a low false rejection or false acceptance rate.

Toward ubiquitous network society, there have been challenges to construct smart spaces in living space such as homes and offices by connecting embedded devices with each other;however, many existing smart spaces tend to depend on particular platform or be a self-contained environment. In this paper, we describe requirements on frameworks for smart spaces with embedded devices, and then propose a new framework based on the requirements. The proposed framework is designed to have high scalability and be suitable for cross-platform environments by employing RESTful web service for device interaction architecture. By encoding communication messages for requesting services in x-www-form-urlencoded scheme, the proposed framework can support many kinds of devices including resource-limited devices which can't afford an XML parser. Evaluation with existing frameworks shows the proposed framework is suitable as a framework for smart spaces because of its simple and lightweight architecture.

The most scientific papers dealing with handwriting recognition systems make statements relating to recognition performance based on a forced-recognition rate. This rate describes the ratio between the number of the correct recognized samples and the number of all possible samples. This paper proposes a new technique to improve the previous research work in order to have a better result. As part of the preprocessing phase the image file is checked for skewing. If the image is skewed, it is corrected by a simple rotation technique in the appropriate direction. Character fragmentation process is done based on the existing technique. The improvement of feature extraction process is made by detecting details of glyph and used as an input for the classification process of ANN (Artificial Neural Network) to develop a full OCR system. Result indicated that some versions, even upon first using them, were at least as good as last methods of recognition.

This paper describes environmental recognition and motion control using weightless neural network classifier and interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller. The weightless neural network classifies geometric feature such as U-shape, corridor and left or right corner using ultrasonic sensors. The neural network utilizes previous sensor data and analyzes the situation of the current environment. The behavior of mobile robot is implemented by means of fuzzy control rules. Based on the performance criteria the quality of controller is evaluated to make navigation decisions. This functionality is demonstrated on a mobile robot using modular platform and containing several microcontrollers implies the implementation of a robust architecture. The proposed architecture implemented using low cost range sensor and low cost microprocessor. The experiment results show that the mobile robot can recognize the current environment and was able to successfully avoid obstacle in real time.

It is a common belief among researchers of the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) community that ITS applications are the key to make transportation systems safer, more comfortable, and more efficient, while reducing the environmental impact. However, there seems to be a gap between ITS community and final users. It cannot be assumed that the advantages of ITS are clear to the users, and we must bear in mind that their reluctance to use some applications and services may be a serious problem to gain the maximum benefit from the ITS research. Of special significance are those systems which reduce the role of the driver in favor of automated control systems. This paper focuses on that gap, and presents the results obtained from a survey made to find out the attitude of young Spanish undergraduate students towards ITS. Special attention is payed to information and communication technologies (ICT) students, since they are expected to be a part of the ITS community in a short future. Age, gender and college degree are taken into account when analyzing the results. As an example of our study, it was found that polled Spanish undergraduates seem to be more concerned about the environment than about road safety. Furthermore, the difference of concern is even larger among students of ICT degrees. The paper concludes with some clues to understand the answers given by students.
