This paper reports a study about system response time (SRT) in communication robots that utilize human-like social features, such as anthropomorphic appearance and conversation in natural language. Our research purpose established a design guideline for SRT in communication robots. The first experiment observed user preferences toward different SRTs in interaction with a robot. In other existing user interfaces, faster response is usually preferred. In contrast, our experimental result indicated that user preference for SRT in a communication robot is highest at one second, and user preference ratings level off at two seconds. However, a robot cannot always respond in such a short time as one or two seconds. Thus, the important question is "What should a robot do if it cannot respond quickly enough?" The second experiment tested the effectiveness of a conversational filler: behavior to notify listeners that the robot is going to respond. In Japanese "etto" is used to buy time to think and resembles "well..." and "uh..." In English. We used the same strategy in a communication robot to shadow system response time. Our results indicated that using a conversational filler by the robot moderated the user's impression toward a long SRT. Copyright 2008 ACM.

In the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) field, the number of applications that demand a high integrity positioning system is growing. In order to improve the integrity of localization systems, GPS is usually hybridized with additional proprioceptive sensors. In this paper, a new hybridization algorithm based on GPS plus odometry and a gyro is proposed as an improvement of the most common extended Kalman filter (EKF) approach. In concrete, these investigations focus on the performance of the system under bad initial conditions. Results show the suitability of the proposed system for navigation under bad initial values of heading, and its benefits as compared to two state-of-the-art methods of the literature: an EKF, and a particle filter based solution.

Image segmentation is a critical stage in many computer vision and image process applications. Accurate segmentation of medical images is very essential in Medical applications but it is very difficult job due to noise and in homogeneity. Fuzzy C-Mean (FCM) is one of the most popular Medical image clustering methods. We noticed that for some images, FCM is sensitive to initialization of centre of clusters. This article introduced a new method based on the combination of genetic algorithm and FCM to solve this problem. The genetic algorithm is used to find initialized centre of the clusters. In this method, the centre is obtained by minimizing an object Function. This object Function specifies sum of distances between each data and their cluster centres. Then FCM is applied with to the case. The experimental result demonstrates the effectiveness of new method by able to initialize centre of the clusters.

Limited by the properties of optical signals, it is not possible to route more than one message simultaneously, without optical crosstalk, over a switching element in an Optical Multistage Interconnection Networks (OMINs). One solution, called the time domain approach, avoids optical crosstalk by arranging the permutation in such a way that a set of crosstalk-free connections can be established and each connection set be made active in different time slots. Based on the Zero algorithms, we proposed a fast and efficient crosstalk-free algorithm for message routing in optical Omega multistage networks. The Bitwise Window Method (BWM) is used to identify potential message conflicts that may further lead to optical crosstalk. In addition, the inverse Conflict Matrix (iCM) is used to map identified conflicts between messages in the network. It is shown that the new algorithm successfully improved the execution time in comparison to the original Zero algorithm.

Based on the ZeroX algorithm, we proposed a fast and efficient crosstalk-free algorithm called the Fast ZeroX algorithm for solving optical crosstalk problem in omega networks. In our approach, we introduced the concept of inverse conflict matrix (iCM), another representation of a conflict matrix in which it summarizes all possible conflicts between each node in the network. Using iCM, the ZeroX algorithm is simplified, thus improved by reducing the time needed for routing process. From our simulation results, it is shown that our approach yields better performance in terms of minimal routing time in comparison to the original ZeroX algorithm.

Measuring post dialysis urea rebound (PDUR) requires a 30- or 60-minute post-dialysis sampling, which is inconvenient. This paper presents a novel technique for predicting equilibrated urea concentration and post dialysis urea rebound in the form of a Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy inference system. The advantage of this neuro-fuzzy hybrid approach is that it doesn't require 30-60-minute post-dialysis urea sample. Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was constructed to predict equilibrated urea (C eq ) taken at 60 min after the end of the hemodialysis (HD) session in order to predict PDUR. The accuracy of the ANFIS was prospectively compared with other traditional methods for predicting equilibrated urea (C eq ), PDUR and equilibrated dialysis dose (e q Kt/V). The results are highly promising, and a comparative analysis suggests that the proposed modeling approach outperforms artificial neural networks and other traditional urea kinetic models (UKM).

The recent advances in image based rendering (IBR) have pioneered freely determining the viewing position and angle in a scene from multi-view video. Noting that a person could also record a personal video for this arbitrarily selected view and misuse this content, apparently, copyright and copy protection problems also exist and should be solved for IBR applications. In our recent work [1], we have proposed a watermarking method, which embeds the watermark pattern into every frame of multi- view video and extracts this watermark from a rendered image, generated by the nearest-interpolation based light-field rendering (LFR). This paper presents a novel solution for the challenging problem of watermark detection in bilinear interpolation, namely the most attractive and promising interpolation method for LFR-based applications. Moreover, the location of the virtual camera could be completely arbitrary in this new formulation. The results show that the watermark could be extracted successfully for LFR via bilinear interpolation for any imagery camera location and rotation, as long as the visual quality of the rendered image is preserved.

Image segmentation is a key process in computer vision and image process applications. Accurate segmentation of medical images is very essential in medical applications but it is very difficult job due to noise and in homogeneity that are usual of medical images. In this paper a new method, based on FCM, is proposed to make FCM more robust against noise. Multi-scale images are obtained by smoothing input image in different scales. FCM is applied to multi-scale images from high scale to low scale. First FCM is applied to image with highest scale. Then in each scale, cluster centers of previous scale are used to initialization membership for current scale. Moreover, in FCM, neighborhood attraction is used to more decrease effect of noise in clustering. Experimental result shows effectiveness of new method.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the JXTA-based e-Learning P2P system. We also show the design and implementation of a smart box environment that will be used for stimulating the learners to increase the learning efficiency. The smart box is intended to be integrated with our P2P system as a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity. Finally, it is also useful to evaluate the feasibility of our P2P platform to integrate different computational devices.
