A new detection scheme, namely AND subtraction technique is proposed and presented in this paper. The theory is being elaborated and experimental results have been done by comparing double-weight (DW) code against the existing code, Hadamard. In this paper we have proved that AND subtraction technique gives better bit error rates (BER) performance than Complementary subtraction technique against the received power level.

To meet needs in cell and tissue engineering bioreactors are evolving to allow cells and tissues to be cultured under precisely defined physical and chemical conditions. Many cell-tissue types are now being cultured, and considered in this work are chondrocytes, vascular endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. The culture processes are dynamic and optimisation requires monitoring of key process variables. The chemical sensing in cell and tissue bioreactors described here has the long term aim of achieving automatic optimal control. Invasive and non-invasive electrochemical and optical systems are described for a wide range of target analytes (gases, ions, metabolites, hormones and proteins), but emphasis is on O 2 , pH, CO 2 and glucose. The sensing is performed with: (a) interrogation via the bioreactor wall; (b) probes placed within the cell culture chamber; (c) analysis within a shunt/sampling chamber. Analysis of culture medium is used for measurement of glucose and for proteins that are markers of cell biosynthetic behaviour. Optical absorbance and scatter of cells and tissues are also investigated for both chemical and structural analysis

In this paper, a novel analysis technique is applied for investigating human operators' trial and error learning process to control a nonholonomic system, 2-link planer underactuated manipulator (2PUAM). An essential core of the technique is to use a value function of the reinforcement learning scheme for revealing how the operators can find a control strategy. It is an advantage of the proposed technique compared to the others that a transition of the value function may explain the changes of the operators' strategies during the learning process. According to the results of the analysis, the operators tended to explore an objective trajectory first, and then shift to the tracking control of the trajectory. The tracking was accompanied with acceleration to achieve the goal faster. Interestingly, the acceleration disturbs the objective trajectory due to the complex dynamics of the target, and induces another exploration to get better trajectories. The fact that this phase transition structure under unsupervised learning environment is consistent with previously reported results for a supervised case implies that the structure can be a general nature of human learning process.
A family of binary sequences is presented and proved to have optimal correlations and large linear span. It includes the small set of Kasami sequences, No sequence set and TN sequence set as special cases. A lower bou...

In this paper, we present preliminary work we have done on designing the TactaPack, a wearable sensor/actuator device that uses a Bluetooth wireless connection to return sensor data to a host, and to receive commands to initiate expressive vibrotactile stimuli. We present our work in the context of a physical therapy application designed to provide more autonomy for patients when performing rehabilitative exercises. This assistive technology has the potential to reduce injuries during therapy due to improper patient joint movement, and decrease the workload of physical therapists, thereby reducing healthcare costs. Though still in the early stages of design, we believe the TactaPack can be used to produce systems that are less cumbersome than current, wired solutions, and simplify the creation of high-level applications by offloading from the CPU to the device the process of sensing, testing against threshold values, and actuation.

The extension of telecommunication frontiers towards deep space scenarios has opened new horizons in the way of designing networking infrastructures and has raised the necessity of developping novel communication paradigms, more suited to this specific environment. Under this view, given the hazardous operative conditions (very large latencies and frequent link disconnections), in which the exchange of data has to be performed among remote peers, the exploitation of TCP-based transmission schemes does not offer satisfactory results. On the contrary, the use of erasure coding schemes and more appropriate Automatic Repeat reQuest(ARQ) approaches, available within the Packet Layer Coding-based protocols and the Consultative Committee for Space Data systems (CCSDS) protocol architectures respectively, assure better performance results. In this paper, the adoption of erasure codes within CCSDS protocol stack is considered, and its effectiveness is evaluated with respect to ARQ-based transmission schemes available within the CCSDS File Delivery Protocol and hence proposing a combined use of erasure codes and ARQ schemes in order to optimize the overall performance.

Creating a good quality Adaptive Educational Hypermedia (AEH) system involves a great expenditure of time, effort and money, especially to author the materials in order to implement adaptivity. Moreover, authoring AEH systems is as hard as maintaining them. Furthermore, with the new advances in AEH development, the authored content in a given system can become outdated very rapidly. When the massive overhead in authoring is combined with the possibility of the current AEH system becoming unavailable due to lack of maintenance, providing interoperability of adaptive systems becomes necessary. This paper describes our research on providing interoperability of user models between different AEH systems via a one-to-one conversion between two AEH systems, MOT and WHURLE. Here, we identify the differences and commonalities and address how these influence the efficiency of the conversion of the two systems' user models. Although this conversion is done via simple peer-to-peer interaction, it can be easily extended to make use of semantic web technologies, as for example RDF or XML conversion formats, or web services for user model exchange. Therefore, we consider that our work on feature extractions sets the basis for such conversions for the Web and Semantic Web. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Enhancement of laser energy absorption has been demonstrated by pulse laser ablation of solid target whose surface was intentionally roughened. We have studied pulse laser ablation of roughened surface of ground glass surface by focusing a laser pulse through transparent plate from rear side. Ablation process has been observed by high speed framing camera. Burst of small fragments of glass has been observed in the present experiment. By using ns‐duration Nd:YAG laser of around 100 mJ per pulse, observed peak velocity of glass particle cloud ranges 0.5 km/s to 1.5 km/s. SEM observation of the ground glass surface revealed that virgin glass surface is covered with plenty of micro cracks, while cleavage surface structure has been evidenced in the damaged surface area.
