A feedback decentralized optimal approach for traffic control in urban networks is developed. The control structure is based on the minimization of an objective function corresponding to the difference among the travel times from each origin node to all the possible destination through the available route on the network. The problem solution is provided on a temporal horizon not specified. The adopted methodology foresees the use of three different algorithmic structures; the first one is able to define the dynamics of the transportation system, and has gotten with a macro model of traffic simulation; the second is used for estimating the travel times on the links, using Gallager's algorithm (1977), and the third defines the resolution of a linear problem of optimization subject to non linear constraints.

Supporting multimedia applications with guaranteed quality of service over a token-passing bus local area network (LAN) is explored through extensive computer simulations. As the provision of real-time properties over a LAN is not so easy to assure, we introduce two levels of priority mechanisms to privileged stream-oriented traffic over burst traffic. One priority level is imposed over the (logical-ring) bus while the other is applied inside the station. In addition, we suggest two algorithms of token utilization; namely, the limited and exhaustive disciplines. The performance of the network is investigated under different operating scenarios. The effect of system parameters on the network performance is discussed and compared. The obtained results show that the token-passing bus LAN with the right compromise is effectively capable of delivering multimedia services without violating their service quality constraints. This will herald a new generation of electronic offices and factory automation.

In wireless communication networks, handoff management is one of the challenging areas in order to maintain the connectivity and its efficiency in handling the mobile users. A handoff switch is defined as a point in the network from which a new sub-path to new base station is established. It should have functions for rerouting and buffering. We propose an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch with handoff support functions, which may perform buffering and rerouting efficiently, achieves in-sequence cell transmission and minimizes the cell loss during a handoff. Buffering is needed in the mobility support ATM switch to reduce the cell loss probability (CLP) with tolerable delay maintaining in-sequence cell delivery, which is not available in ATM switch. A mobility support ATM switch with fully shared input buffer functionality is analyzed with required optimum buffer size under bursty (on-off) traffic maintaining the quality of service (QoS) contract.

In wireless multimedia networks, there exists traffic asymmetry between uplink and downlink channels. The CDMA/TDD system can alleviate this problem, however, previous work in this area can not manage efficiently the traffic, asymmetry among cells. In this paper, we propose a new time slot allocation scheme that considers the traffic pattern of each cell. To solve the inter-cell interference problem, we divide a cell's area into two regions and we allocate the resource of crossed slots to mobile stations which are existing in the inner-region. This proposed scheme increases the resource utilization and decreases the blocking probability of the system as a whole. And our DARD (Different time slot Allocation based on a Region Division) scheme outperforms conventional SA (Same time slot Allocation) scheme in the heterogeneous traffic environment.

As the volume of Internet information has been increasing, an Internet retrieval agent is studied to offer an individualized or specialized retrieval engine according to the user's preference and purpose and to overcome the weak points existing in retrieval engines. In order to elevate the recall and precision of a retrieval engine and simultaneously to get effective results, the existing retrieval engine should be moduled enabling effective distribution and multi-processing. Through this process user preference should be reflected on the retrieval result. Real time monitoring of tool wear in machining operations is very crucial in order to prevent tool failures, increase machine utilization and decrease production cost in an automated manufacturing environment. In general the price of the tool is relatively low, but the failure can cause incomparably higher production cost. Over the years, a wide variety of tool condition monitoring (TCM) techniques has been developed based on sensor signals such as cutting forces, acoustic emission and vibration. In this paper, a real time monitoring technique based on multiple modeling method is presented for drilling operations which is one of the most widely used manufacturing operations. The multiple modeling method utilizes cutting forces (thrust and torque) collected during the drilling operation and classifies these forces using hidden Markov models (HMM) to determine wear status of the drill bit. Experimental results have been presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

PID controllers have been widely used in many chemical processes. Because they have only three control parameters and their physical meanings can be easily grasped. However, it is difficult to tune those parameters practically, since the process dynamics often change due to operating conditions or various disturbances. For this problem, a design method of robust PID controllers has been already proposed by the authors in order to guarantee the stability of the control system. However, as that control method is conservative, the desirable setpoint response can not be always obtained. In this paper, a design scheme of a self-tuning pre-filter is proposed to supplement the robust PID controller based on the two-degree-of-freedom control scheme. According to the proposed scheme, the transient property for the setpoint response can be improved keeping the robust stability. Finally, the proposed scheme is experimentally evaluated on an air pressure control system.

This paper proposes the method of fuzzy rough sets for the recognition of Thai Characters. We divide the classification process into 2 levels, coarse and fine classification. Both levels of classification have the same processes, applying the rough set lower approximation and then using fuzzy rough sets. The difference between the two levels is in the features of the input data used for classifying. There are 40 coarse groups and some of them need not pass through the second level of classification. We trained this system with 2816 training samples, which were composed of 4 fonts and 4 sizes of characters. The system is tested with an unknown sample, which is composed of 7 fonts and 7 sizes of characters; 4 fonts and 4 sizes of the training sample are inclusive. The accuracy of this proposed system is as high as 89%.
