Previous protocol test sequence generation techniques made a simplifying, but potentially unrealistic assumption: that only one fault existed in an implementation. The authors propose a technique that accounts for multiple faults, generating test sequences based on protocol specifications and interim test results. Although it generates a slightly longer test sequence, this technique applies to a larger class of protocols. Simulation experiments establish its useful range of fault coverage and the corresponding test sequence length.

A form evaluation system for brush-written Chinese characters is *** knowledge used in the system is represented in the form of ruleswith the help of a data structure proposed in this paper. Reflecting the spe-cific hierarchical relations among radicals and strokes of Chinese characters,the proposed data structure is based upon a character model that can generatebrush-written Chinese characters on a computer. Through evaluation experi-ments using the developed system, it is shown that representation of calligraphicknowledge and form evaluation of Chinese characters can be smoothly realizedif the data structure is utilized.

The power-transfer characteristics of a three-waveguide nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) ave investigated with the beam-propagation method based on the finite-difference scheme. The coupler consists of two outer linear waveguides and a center waveguide with a nonlinear Kerrlike medium. It is shown that the three-waveguide NLDC is useful for constructing a power-dependent power divider, a power-dependent power combiner, and an optical logic element. This paper addresses the computational aspects of the frequency response for sampled-data systems. We first give two types of lower bound formulas. The first is derived via fast sampling of the input functions and the second is derived via the dual system. It is shown that as the fast sampling period approaches zero, these lower bounds converge to the gain. Two different formulas for upper bounds are also obtained. One is based on the information about the closed-loop poles, and another relates the gains of the /spl Hscr//sub 2/ norm equivalent discrete-time system. We then discuss the bisection search. It is seen that where certain non-degeneracy condition holds, bisection search is possible, some comparisons are made with numerical examples.

Rate-based congestion control promises effective traffic management for the ABR service class suitable for data communications in ATM networks. There have been proposed several rate-based congestion control schemes in the ATM Forum, including Enhanced Proportional Rate Control Algorithm (EPRCA) and EPRCA++ methods. While many studies have been devoted for these schemes in the past, only ABR traffic is taken into account; the effect of VBR and CBR service classes, in which multimedia traffic are accommodated, are not considered. We evaluate the performance of rate-based congestion control schemes when not only ABR traffic but also VBR traffic is incorporated into the ATM network. Through simulation experiments, we show the drawbacks of current rate-based congestion control proposals for multimedia traffic, and give several suggestions to overcome those problems.

Rate-based congestion control is effective and still simple for traffic management in ATM networks. As one of practical realization schemes, enhanced proportional rate control algorithm (EPRCA) has recently been proposed and adopted as a standard by the ATM Forum. While EPRCA can offer a desirable feature in steady state, the queue length considerably grows when the active number of connections on the link becomes large, which is so called a "large VC's problem". In particular, when the large number of VCs starts cell transmission at the same time, the rate-control does not work well. We present an analytic result to give a deep insight into this problem for three types of switches suggested in EPRCA. Further, we demonstrate that a prioritized switch which can limit a maximum queue length at an appropriate level.

Recently magnetic-field measurements of the brain have become a useful tool to study higher brain function. The purpose of this study is to propose source models of both the memorizing process and the recognition process. The components of magnetic fields perpendicular to the surface of the head were measured by using a whole cortex type of dc SQUID with a third-derivative gradiometer. The authors observed the extremely slow components of MEG activities during both the memorizing process and the recognition process. The authors estimated the sources using two current dipoles and compared the two cases.
