We propose a novel advanced orthogonal modulation format dark return-to-zero frequency shift keying/differential phase shift keying (DRZ-FSK/DPSK) and its realization scheme. The DRZ-FSK/DPSK is generated by the combination of a 40-Gb/s return-to-zero (RZ) signal and a DRZ signal which is converted from the RZ using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based on nonlinear cross polarization rotation (XPR) and then re-modulated by high-bit-rate DPSK at 40 Gb/s. The feasibility of the scheme is exper-imentally demonstrated. Bit error rate (BER) results of the total 80-Gb/s DRZ-FSK/DPSK orthogonal modulation signal with a subsequent 100-km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link show its potential for future high-speed long-haul optical communication.

Optical frequency shift keying (FSK) homodyne detection utilizing image rejection in FSK/amplitude shift keying (ASK) re-modulation wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) is proposed and demonstrated. Image rejection is adopted to achieve better performance. We show the result in back-to-back and 40-km distance respectively and apparent improvement is obtained in the latter situation by using image rejection. Several factors which affect the image rejection receiver are analyzed in order to find out the optimum parameters. Result shows that the presented scheme is suitable for super long reach access network, especially for future metro access network.

Multiple Supply Voltage (MSV) assignment has emerged as an appealing technique in low power IC design, due to its flexibility in balancing power and performance. However, clock skew scheduling, which has great impact on criticality of combinational paths in sequential circuit, has not been explored in the merit of MSV assignment. In this paper, we propose a discrete voltage assignment algorithm for sequential circuit under clock scheduling. The sequential MSV assignment problem is first formulated as a convex cost dual network flow problem, which can be optimally solved in polynomial time assuming delay of each gate can be chosen in continuous domain. Then a mincut-based heuristic is designed to convert the unfeasible continuous solution into feasible discrete solution while largely preserving the global optimality. Besides, we revisit the hardness of the general discrete voltage assignment problem and point out some misunderstandings on the approximability of this problem in previous related work. Benchmark test for our algorithm shows 9.2% reduction in power consumption on average, in compared with combinational MSV assignment. Referring to the continuous solution obtained from network flow as the lower bound, the gap between our solution and the lower bound is only 1.77%.

A novel scheme to generate coherent 21 optical subcarriers with fixed frequency of 25 GHz is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using these optical subcarriers, we have successfully generated 1.96 Tb/s (21 × 100 Gb/s) polarization-multiplexing optical orthogonal frequency multiplexed (PM-OFDM) polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) optical superchannel signal with optical signal-noise ratio of each subchannel larger than 30 dB (0.1-nm bandwidth). We have transmitted this 1.96-Tb/s optical OFDM superchannel over 3200-km SMF-28 with amplification span of 80 km with erbium-doped fiber amplifier-only.

Novel optical offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) and improved minimum-shift keying (MSK) modulation schemes to smooth optical phase hopping for high speed fiber optics transmission are proposed. Simulations have been done among the MSK, OQPSK, quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), and binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation formats at 40 Gb/s over 100-km transmission link using coherent detection. Simulation results present good performances to elevate chromatic dispersion tolerance and reduce the influence of nonlinear effects by adopting the smooth phase modulation formats. Inter-symbol interference decreases for the fast side-lobe property and tight spectrum as a result of avoding the π phase shift and reducing envelop fluctuation.
