Super-resolution algorithms aim to produce magnified high-resolution versions from low-resolution images. Some methods, however, are prone to generate blur during the process. Simple sharpening filters are adopted to alleviate this type of artifact. However, the actual effectiveness of this approach is not clear-cut in the literature. This work evaluates the effect of three simple sharpening filters on the quality of images obtained from super-resolution methods. Two metrics were considered in the evaluation: the Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) metric, and the Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS). One of the filters could consistently improve the LPIPS metric of magnified images from diverse benchmark sets on top of seven super-resolution methods. The increments obtained for the perceptual metric seem to occur due to the sharpening effect. Improvements on PSNR values were not as consistent. © 2022 SPIE.

In this paper, considering photovoltaic/battery sourced microgrids with grid-forming droop control in the load interface converter for power management, two alternative converter topologies for the battery are tested: dual boost interleaved converter and three-phase interleaved converter. These topologies are based on the conventional bidirectional buckboost converter and their employment is to allow a reduction in component sizing, improvement in power quality, and higher output voltage. Analysis of the operation of these converters in different operation modes of the microgrid is carried out, including battery normal charging, battery normal discharging, battery charging limit, and maximum state-of-charge, through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Results suggest advantages such as reduced stress on switches and battery charging current ripple for the two interleaved converters tested and the potential implementation of higher output voltage for the dual boost converter.

Due to continuous technological advances, fake news is rampant on social media platforms, making it an urgent area of research. This research investigates various Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and feature extraction techniques to classify news as real or fake. The study compares different ML models, such as Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN), Naïve Bayes (NB), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), and Stacked ensemble models. Six feature extraction methods were utilized, measured, and compared, including Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Bag of Words (BOW), 2-grams, 3-grams, (1-2) grams, and (1-2-3) grams. The experiments were on a merged dataset for supervised learning and a separate test dataset for blind testing. The results showed that SVM, DT, and Stacked models achieve up to 99% accuracy with TF-IDF and BOW on the merged dataset. For the blind testing, K-NN for BOW and MLP for TF-IDF had an accuracy of 64% on separate test datasets. Lastly, the results demonstrated that n-grams helped to understand the context and the order of words, but a higher value of $\mathbf{n}$ increased dimensionality and caused sparsity.

The primary endeavor of this investigation is to determine the Darcy–Forchheimer flow of water-based silver nanofluid (Ag) across a bidirectional Riga plate with viscous dissipation and nonlinear radiation. By manipulating the pertinent variables, the governing equations undergo a transformation into nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The remodeled flow problems are investigated numerically and analytically using the MATLAB (bvp4c built-in function) algorithm and the homotopy analysis method scheme. The repercussions of the appropriate factors on the x− and y− direction velocity profiles, temperature profile, skin friction coefficient of the x− and y− directions, and local Nusselt number are examined via tables and graphs. It is found that both directional fluid velocities decline in the presence of the suction/injection parameter. Increasing the radiation parameter and the Eckert number exalts the fluid temperature. The surface shear stress decays as the suction/injection parameter and the Forchheimer number grow larger. In addition, a greater heat transfer rate appears on the Riga plate compared to the stationary plate. © 2024 The Author(s)

In the realm of spatio-temporal fractional dynamics in a predator–prey system, we investigate fractional solitary wave-like solutions using the conformable space–time fractional coupled diffusion equation. To achieve this goal, we utilize the fractional derivative wave transformation approach to convert the conformable space–time fractional coupled nonlinear partial differential equations into equivalent ordinary differential equations. Subsequently, employing the [Formula presented] expansion technique, we obtain exact solutions for the transformed coupled ordinary differential equations. With the aid of these solutions and the fractional wave transformation, we construct three distinct fractional solitary wave-like solutions, namely kink-type, periodic, and rational for the considered fractional diffusive predator–prey model. Furthermore, we explore the dynamic attributes of prey and predator population densities by manipulating the space and time fractional-order parameters. Our findings reveal a significant insight: an increase in the fractional order can lead to system stabilization and foster the coexistence of both prey and predator species. © 2024 The Author(s)

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are crucial for microgrids, enhancing dynamic performance and mitigating uncertainties inherent to isolated environments characterized by intermittent power generation. When microgrid is supplied by wind power in connection with BESS, the bidirectional DC-DC converter associated with BESS assumes a critical responsibility—ensuring the control of a wind power supplied DC-link. This permits the Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) to synthesize consistent voltages for the connected AC load. However, challenges emerge, particularly in arduous stress on switches of the bidirectional converter attributed to elevated current ripple. This stress does not only prejudice the overall system’s functioning but can also potentially leading it to shutdown in case of switch failure. Traditionally, the conventional buck-boost converter topology has been the go-to choice for this application, nevertheless, exploring novel converter topologies, such as interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter (IBDC) has garnered attention, promising enhanced performance. This paper’s goal is to conduct a comparative analysis of the operation of these converters in an islanded microgrid supplied by a single Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG) small-scale wind turbine with a BESS system. Load variation with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) operation of the PMSG is performed during MATLAB/Simulink environment simulations. The results suggest significant advantages for the interleaved three-phase converter, such as reduced battery charging current ripple, switch disturbance, and voltage ripple in the DC-link.

In this paper, we investigate difference-differential operators of parabolic and hyperbolic types. Namely, we consider non-homogenous heat and wave equations for Rubin’s difference operator. Well-posedness results are obtained in appropriate Sobolev type spaces. In particular, we prove that the heat and wave equations generated by Rubin’s difference operator have unique solutions. Scaffold-guided bone regeneration (SGBR) offers a promising solution for treating large-volume bone defects. However, its efficacy in compromised healing environments, such as those associated with metabolic conditions like Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), remains poorly understood. This study evaluates the potential of 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds for large-volume bone regeneration in preclinical models simulating T2D-induced metabolic challenges. Our results reveal that scaffolds alone are insufficient to overcome the metabolic barriers to effective bone regeneration. Metabolomic analysis of regenerating tissue identified significant disruptions in key metabolic pathways involved in energy production and amino acid synthesis in T2D rats compared to controls. Notably, aconitic acid, ornithine, and glycine levels were elevated in non-diabetic conditions, whereas phosphoenolpyruvate was markedly increased under T2D conditions. Secondary harmonic generation (SHG) imaging further demonstrated impaired collagen organization within T2D regenerating tissue, correlating with disrupted collagen synthesis critical for bone matrix formation. In vitro, the exogenous supplementation of alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG)—a crucial citric acid cycle intermediate—enhanced mineralized tissue formation in human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAdMSCs) from T2D donors, achieving levels superior to non-T2D cells. These findings underscore the metabolic underpinnings of impaired bone regeneration in T2D. Optimized 3D printed scaffolds alone do not counterbalance the impaired regeneration in T2D. Here we highlight a therapeutic potential of metabolic supplementation to optimize SGBR outcomes. This study provides a critical foundation for advancing translational research and developing regenerative therapies tailored to high-risk metabolic disease populations. The main tasks confirming the scientific novelty and practical value of the article is the development of a wireless sensor network for detecting intrusions and fires. A model of a sensor network for monitoring temperature and carbon monoxide levels has been developed. A device is proposed as a wireless sensor unit for monitoring temperature and carbon monoxide levels. A method is proposed for determining temperature jumps and carbon monoxide to determine penetrations and fires.
