The chemical screening of an algae-containing marine sponge identified as Lendenfeldia species has isolated two 24-homoscalarane sesterterpenoids, including a known compound, felixin A (1) and a new analogue, lendenfeldarane V (2). The structure of 1, obtained in a previous study, was cited for the first time in this study via single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure of 2 was ascertained via 2D NMR experiments and a literature review. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were delineated with DP4+ computation and specific optical rotation. Homoscalarane 1 exhibited cytotoxicity towards MG63 human osteosarcoma cells. © 2024 Phytochemical Society of Europe

The fabrication of InGaN-based blue 4✕4 array micro-LEDs (μLEDs) with 40 μm ✕40 μm chip size and 2✕2 array μLEDs with 80 μm ✕80 μm chip size etching by the inductive coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICPRIE) and defect-free neutral beam etching (NBE) processes was studied in this work. In μLEDs of this size, the influence of defects formation in the sidewalls on EQE was evaluated. There was almost no difference in EQE between μLEDs array etched by the NBE process no matter 40 μm ✕40 μm and 80 μm ✕80 μm, but the dependence was observed in the ICPRIE. Even with this size, it was found that the size effect of EQE is smaller than that in case of using ICPRIE for defect-free neutral beam etching. This impact is substantial since μLED predominantly operated at low current density, around 1–5 A/cm2. Consequently, the reduction of defect density, encompassing both internal and sidewall defects, becomes imperative even in 40–80 μm InGaN-based μLEDs. This not only improves the overall efficiency of μLEDs but also fortifies the brightness stability of μLED displays if process etching by NBE. It was also found that the etching shape had an influence on EQE. It could be attributed to fact that the etching profile angle of NBE was more vertical than that of ICPRIE. Because the different angles of the mesa resulted in different light intensity. The μLEDs emitting with a wavelength of 450 nm, the light extraction efficiency and intensity at a mesa angle 58° of NBE etching μLEDs was about 8% lower than those of an angle (38°) of ICPRIE etching μLEDs by simulation. © The Authors

Comparative genomics based exploration of xenobiotic degradation patterns in Glutamicibacter, Arthrobacter, and Pseudarthrobacter isolated from diverse ecological habitats

Xenobiotics pose a substantial threat to environmental integrity by disrupting normal ecosystems. The genus Arthrobacter, known for its metabolic versatility can degrade several xenobiotic compounds. Arthrobacter strains have also undergone frequent taxonomic revisions and reclassifications to strains including Pseudarthrobacter and Glutamicibacter. Here, we present the complete genome sequence of Glutamicibacter protophormiae strain NG4, isolated from a coastal area surrounded by chemical plants. Further, through comparative genomics involving 55 strains from Glutamicibacter, Arthrobacter, and Pseudarthrobacter, we elucidated taxonomic relationships and xenobiotic degradation potential. Our genomics-based findings revealed a generally even distribution of xenobiotic-degrading genes and pathways among the studied strains. Glutamicibacter species emerged as potential candidate for steroid degradation. A significant number of host-specific and environmental isolates predominantly possessed pathways for 4-hydroxybenzoate (4-HB) degradation and only the environmental isolates possessed benzoate degradation pathway. Certain Arthrobacter and Pseudarthrobacter species isolated from the environmental settings were identified as potential degraders of toluene, xylene, and phenanthrene. Notably, most strains contained pathways for azathioprine, capecitabine, and 5-fluorouridine pharmaceutical drug metabolism. Overall, our findings shed light on microbial metabolic diversity among 55 strains isolated from diverse sources and hint the importance of strict environmental monitoring. Further, for the application of the putative xenobiotic degrading strains, experimental validation is required in the future. © 2024

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) enables studying spatial organization of gene expression within tissues, offering insights into the molecular diversity of tumors. Recent methods have demonstrated the capability to disaggregate this information at subspot resolution by leveraging both expression and histological patterns. Elucidating such information from histology alone presents a significant challenge, but if solved can enable spatial molecular analysis at cellular resolution even where ST data is not available, reducing study costs. This study explores integrating single-cell histological and transcriptomic data to infer spatial mRNA expression patterns in colorectal cancer whole slide images. A cell-graph neural network algorithm was developed to align histological information extracted from detected cells with single cell RNA, facilitating the analysis of cellular groupings and gene relationships. We demonstrate that single-cell transcriptional heterogeneity within a spot could be predicted from histological markers extracted from cells detected within it. Our model exhibited proficiency in delineating overarching gene expression patterns across whole-slide images. This approach compared favorably to traditional computer vision methods which did not incorporate single cell expression during the model training. This innovative approach augments the resolution of spatial molecular assays utilizing histology as sole input through co-mapping of histological and transcriptomic datasets at the single-cell level. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– science and Technology Publications, Lda.

We experimentally show that the 1s22s22p1/2−1s2s22p1/22 transition in Pb77+ emitted in dielectronic recombination of Pb78+ is strongly polarized, although it is an intrinsically unpolarized J=1/2 to 1/2 transition. This unanticipated polarization is shown to be due to quantum interference with radiative recombination. The interference effect has been studied on an asymmetric resonance profile but has never been studied on polarization. In this Letter, we show that the effect on polarization can arise from a different cross term than that responsible for asymmetry, resulting in unexpectedly large polarization even for a nearly symmetric resonance suggesting a small interference.

We develop a method using relativistic density-functional theory with a self-interaction correction, which is simple and fast yet has reasonable accuracy. A comparison with measured Kα lines and their hypersatellites of several atoms, from low Z to high Z, reveals that the relativistic local density approximation is suitable for Kα lines. In contrast, the relativistic local spin density approximation with a self-interaction correction is better for Khα hypersatellites. Compared with the nonrelativistic density-functional theory, we found that the relativistic effect is significant (about 100 eV) even for middle-Z atoms, such as Cu. The screening effects, from inner shell to outer shell, and the conduction band, are also discussed. The present paper provides all the transition lines of muonic atoms, which can be used to narrow down the possible transitions by comparing them with the measurements.

We propose a novel architecture that realizes full-duplex directional beamforming in the sub-terahertz regime. Our architecture leverages the frequency-controlled beam steering of leaky-wave antenna together with the polarization-dependent response of aligned single-wall carbon nanotubes. We evaluate the performance of this architecture via preliminary experiments.

The elimination of small and potentially toxic boron species in water is always a significant challenge for conventional membrane technologies. In this study, facile intercalation and functionalization of β-cyclodextrin (CD) onto layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have resulted in the formation of accessible hydroxyl functional groups and anions that exhibit strong sorption with boron. Through meticulous molecular design and optimization, the modified LDH possessing the maximum boron adsorption capacity of 96.1 mg g-1 was employed to fabricate a polyamide-based thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane with a loading of 0.10 wt.%. This resultant membrane displayed a high salt rejection and water permeance of 99.4 % and 2.68 LMH bar-1 for brackish water, respectively, which can be attributed to the increased interlayer spacing of 1.67 nm and the thinner selective layer. The innovative TFN membrane also achieved a high boron rejection of 82.3 % against brackish water containing 2,000 mg L-1 NaCl and 15 mg L-1 B at pH 8. This pioneering study provides valuable insights into the design of brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) membranes, through the synergistic use of macrocyclic molecules and inorganic layered nanomaterials, that could potentially revolutionize water reuse and boron removal applications. © 2023, The Authors. The 2004 Aceh tsunami triggered by a major earthquake taught us the importance of disaster mitigation efforts, one of which is monitoring seismic activity using earthquake sensors. However, the success of these sensors is highly dependent on community involvement, awareness, and active maintenance of the technology. This study aims to examine the perceptions of the Acehnese community regarding earthquake sensors and to identify factors that influence their perceptions of this disaster mitigation technology. The study was conducted in six districts in Aceh Province: Aceh Besar, Aceh Selatan, Aceh Singkil, Aceh Utara, Lhokseumawe, and Aceh Tengah, which were selected due to their high seismic activity and the installation of existing earthquake sensors. The study involved 112 respondents who completed a questionnaire to assess their knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes toward sensors. A One Sample T-Test was used to assess each factor influenced perceptions. The study showed that experience was the most influential factor in shaping perceptions, indicating that individuals directly involved in installing the sensors were more likely to appreciate their benefits. This study emphasizes the importance of more targeted educational campaign efforts that emphasize the role and importance of earthquake sensors in reducing earthquake risk and bridging the gap in public understanding of earthquake sensors. By directly involving the community in installing or maintaining earthquake sensors, it can improve their perception and increase the effectiveness of disaster preparedness strategies. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
