Silicon nanowires possess superior mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, making them ideal for next-generation sensors. This study presents a scalable technology for monolithic fabrication of sub-micron silicon nanowires with micro electromechanical systems, achieving integration of suspended sub-micron silicon nanowires within microelectromechanical systems up to 80 μm thick on Si substrates, with high yield and repeatability. The technological approach is validated on silicon-on-insulator substrates, followed by electromechanical characterization via electrical probe measurements and vibrational testing for performance validation. The presented technology is promising for the potential development of next-generation high-performance physical sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes.

The hexagonal tabular ß-Mg2Si phase (hex-ß) co-existed with conventional truncated octagonal shaped ß-Mg2Si (con-ß) in Al-1.0 mass% Mg2Si alloy containing a small amount of noble metal elements (NMEs;Cu, Pt, Ag, Pd or Au) at the over-aged condition of 673 K. As this hex-ß laid on the {111} plane of the Al matrix, and its six edges were parallel to ß, its orientation relationship with the Al-matrix is as follows:{111}Al //{111}ß and Al //ßIt was the same as our previous report of (hex-ß) in an ingot of Al-1.0 mass%Mg2Si- 0.5 mass% Cu alloy just homogenized at 723 K for 4 days, without cold-rolling, solution heat treatment, and aging. There is no significant difference in the lattice parameter of ß-Mg2Si by added NMEs. The formation of hex-ß was suggested to be related to defects in the Al-matrix, for example, by segregation of NMEs at the interface, altering the SFE, or introducing partial dislocations. © 2022, The Authors. Monitoring the quality of river water is of fundamental importance and needs to be taken into consideration when it comes to the research into the hydrological field. In this context, the concentration of the dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most significant indicators of the quality of river water. The current study aimed to estimate the minimum, maximum, and mean DO concentrations (DO min, DO max, DO mean) at a gauging station located on Tualatin River, United States. To that end, four machine learning models, such as support vector regression (SVR), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), random forest (RF), and gradient boosting (GB) were established. Root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), coefficient of correlation (R), and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) metrics were employed to better assess the accuracies of these models. The modeling results demonstrated that the SVR and MLP surpassed the RF and GB models. Despite this, the SVR was concluded to be the best-performing method when used to estimate the DO min, DO max, and DO mean. The best error statistics in the testing phase were related to the SVR model with full (four) inputs to estimate DO mean concentration (RMSE = 0.663 mg/l, MAE = 0.508 mg/l, R = 0.945, NSE = 0.875). Finally, the explainability of the superior models (i.e. SVR models) was conducted using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for the first time to estimate DO concentration. In fact, evaluating the explainability of machine learning models can provide useful information about the impact of each of the input estimators used in the procedure of models development. It was concluded that the specific conductance (SC) and followed by water temperature (WT) could provide the most contributions for estimating the DO min, DO max, and DO mean concentrations. © 2024 The Author(s). Analog computing based on wave interactions with metamaterials has been raising significant interest as a low-energy, ultrafast platform to process large amounts of data. Engineered materials can be tailored to impart mathematical operations of choice on the spatial distribution of the impinging signals, but they also require extended footprints and precise large-area fabrication, which may hinder their practical applicability. Here we show that the nonlocal response of a compact scatterer can be engineered to impart operations of choice on arbitrary impinging waves, and even to solve integro-differential equations, whose solution is observed in the scattered fields. The lack of strongly resonant phenomena makes the response robust, and the compact nature opens to scalability and cascading of these processes, paving the way to efficient, compact analog computers based on engineered microstructures.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) with high surface area and tunable pore size are considered as a promising active material for energy storage, but the low electrical conductivity restricts its performance. Developing ZIF67 derivatives with improved electrical conductivity is necessary to broaden its application in electrochemical fields. In this work, two strategies are applied to improve electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance of ZIF67. Novel structure directing agents of NH4BF4 and NH4HF2 are used to synthesize ZIF67 derivatives with higher theoretical capacitances and favorable layered structures. Self-assembled MXene with different amounts is further incorporated in ZIF67 derivatives to establish composites. The optimal composite electrode shows a high specific capacitance (CF) of 1410.4 F/g (775.6C/g) at 20 mV/s, while the ZIF67 derivative electrode without MXene only shows a CF value of 942.3 F/g (518.3C/g), due to the high surface area and better pore structure as well as the close combination of MXene and the layered ZIF67 derivative for the former case. An energy storage device with the optimal composite and carbon electrodes shows the maximum energy density of 32.40 Wh/kg at 375 W/kg. The Coulombic efficiency of 100% and the CF retention of 77.4% are also achieved after 10,000 cycles. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) with a high theoretical capacitance, wide potential ranges and easy availability has attracted much attentions as the electrode material of battery supercapacitor hybrids (BSH). Metal–organic framework (MOF) is one of the promising potential energy storage materials due to its large surface area and controllable pore structures. In this work, novel iron oxide/iron organic framework composites (Fe2O3/FeMOF) are in-situ grown on the Ni foam as efficient energy storage electrodes of BSH. By tuning the solvothermal durations, the morphology changes from random sizes of sheets, regular grown vertical sheets, to flower-like structures. The d-spacing also increases for the Fe2O3/FeMOF synthesized using longer solvothermal durations. The optimal Fe2O3/FeMOF electrode synthesized using 9 h shows a high areal capacitance of 10.97 F/cm2 along with an areal capacity of 5.49 F/cm2 at the current density of 35 mA/cm2, owing to the most regular growth of sheets, the large d-spacing, and the smallest charge-transfer resistances. A BSH composed of the Fe2O3/FeMOF positive electrode and a graphene negative electrode shows a maximum energy density of 0.76 mWh/cm2 at 22.5 mW/cm2. The excellent long-term cycling stability with the capacitance retention of 85% and Coulombic efficiency of 98% are also achieved after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Artificial neural network approach for turbulence models: A local framework

A local artificial neural network (LANN) framework is developed for turbulence modeling. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) unclosed terms are reconstructed by artificial neural network (ANN) based on the local coordinate system which is orthogonal to the curved walls. We verify the proposed model for the flows over periodic hills. The correlation coefficients of the RANS unclosed terms predicted by the LANN model can be made larger than 0.96 in an a priori analysis, and the relative error of the unclosed terms can be made smaller than 18%. In an a posteriori analysis, detailed comparisons are made on the results of RANS simulations using the LANN and Spalart-Allmaras (SA) models. It is shown that the LANN model performs better than the SA model in the prediction of the average velocity, wall-shear stress and average pressure, which gives the results that are essentially indistinguishable from the direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. The LANN model trained in low Reynolds number Re = 2800 can be directly applied in the cases of high Reynolds numbers Re = 5600, 10595, 19000, 37000 with accurate predictions. Furthermore, the LANN model is verified for flows over periodic hills with varying slopes. Far-Field Subwavelength Acoustic computational Imaging with a Single Detector

Acoustic imaging techniques suffer from the diffraction limit due to the loss of evanescent waves that carry subwavelength information of objects. To overcome the diffraction limit, the evanescent components have to be collected and measured. Most of the existing methods targeting this task rely on expensive detector arrays and inefficient near-field point-by-point scanning. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the realization of a far-field acoustic subwavelength imaging method based on a single stationary detector. Specifically, we utilize a series of masks to structure the detected field, so that the evanescent wave information is encoded into the propagating waves due to spatial frequency convolution between the object and masks. Our study shows that, by combining the principles of computational imaging and metalens, high-quality images of a subwavelength object can be reconstructed in the far field, even in the presence of unwanted scatterers. Our work provides a robust method for far-field acoustic subwavelength imaging, which could bring possibilities for acoustic microscopy and could further be applied to medical ultrasonography, underwater sonar, and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation.

Synthetic data are increasingly being used in data-driven fields. While synthetic data is a promising tool in medicine, it raises new ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) challenges. There is a recognized need for well-designed approaches and standards for documenting and communicating relevant information about artificial intelligence (AI) research datasets and models, including consideration of the many ELSI challenges. This study investigates the ethical dimensions of synthetic data and explores the utility and challenges of ELSI-focused computational checklists for biomedical AI via semi-structure interviews with subject matter experts. Our results suggest that AI experts have tempered views about the promises and challenges of both synthetic data and ELSI-focused computational checklists. Experts discussed a number of ELSI issues covered by previous literature on the topic, such as issues of bias and privacy, yet other less discussed ELSI issues, such as social justice implications and issues of trust were also raised. When discussing ELSI-focused computational checklists our participants highlighted the challenges connected to developing and implementing them.

A Human-Centered Design Approach to SOVTE Straw Phonation Instruction

Objectives: Extensive research has demonstrated that straw/tube phonation exercises produce positive effects on the voice quality of the user. The purpose of this study was to explore pedagogical practices employed by a range of voice professionals when using SOVTEs by applying human-centered design approaches to examine workflow and communication between teachers and students. Method/Design: The researchers conducted a series of five participatory role-playing workshop activities at a multi-disciplinary vocology conference that included speech-language pathologists, voice scientists, physicians, singing teachers, acting voice teachers, choral directors, and singers. Volunteers were asked to assume the role of teaching or learning straw phonation exercises. The other participants from each workshop were asked to provide written and verbal feedback regarding the teacher/student dynamics and what they found most important and relevant in terms of best practices for SOVTEs. Expert evaluators subsequently provided similar feedback based on video recordings of the workshops. Results: While there was variability noted in teaching techniques and results, common themes emerged in the analysis. Successful and unsuccessful student and teacher techniques were identified by the workshop participants. Through the video analysis, the research team identified themes in instructional teaching, experiential learning, and straw articulation and mechanics. Conclusions: The benefits of straw/tube phonation exercises on voice quality have been well-established and are clear. As we continue to refine best practices in SOVTEs and, in particular, straw phonation, involvement of experts in HCD as part of multidisciplinary teams may lead to the eventual design of SOVTE tools that provide greater precision, consistency, and effectiveness both in clinical and pedagogical settings, and aid in the differentiation of SOVTE approaches within the taxonomy of vocal habilitation and rehabilitation te
