Association of seafood consumption with sleep quality according to high sensitivity C-reactive protein levels in Korean adults

Objective The consumption of seafood, which is major sources of n -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acids, has been associated with sleep quality. Seafood and its bioactive components may enhance sleep quality by regulating systemic inflammation and neuroendocrine pathways. However, longitudinal studies examining the interplay between seafood consumption, sleep quality, and inflammatory status are lacking. Therefore, in this cohort study of 2332 participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, we investigated the potential modulatory role of inflammatory status for the association between seafood consumption and the risk of poor sleep quality. Methods and measurements Dietary intake was assessed using a validated 106-item food frequency questionnaire. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were assessed as a marker of systematic inflammatory status. Sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the risk of poor sleep quality was estimated using Cox proportional hazards model. Results After 6 years of follow-up, 118 and 192 cases of poor sleep quality were documented among men and women, respectively. The greater seafood consumption was significantly associated with lower risk of poor sleep quality. The multivariable-adjusted HR (95% CI) comparing the highest with the lowest tertile of seafood consumption was 0.66 (0.45–0.98) ( p- trend = 0.032). This inverse association appeared to be limited to participants with lower levels of hs-CRP. Conclusion Our results suggested that the favorable effects of seafood consumption on sleep quality could vary by inflammatory status. Larger cohort studies are warranted to replicate our findings.

Reliable extrapolation of deep neural operators informed by physics or sparse observations

Deep neural operators can learn nonlinear mappings between infinite-dimensional function spaces via deep neural networks. As promising surrogate solvers of partial differential equations (PDEs) for real-time prediction, deep neural operators such as deep operator networks (DeepONets) provide a new simulation paradigm in science and engineering. Pure data-driven neural operators and deep learning models, in general, are usually limited to interpolation scenarios, where new predictions utilize inputs within the support of the training set. However, in the inference stage of real-world applications, the input may lie outside the support, i.e., extrapolation is required, which may result to large errors and unavoidable failure of deep learning models. Here, we address this challenge of extrapolation for deep neural operators. First, we systematically investigate the extrapolation behavior of DeepONets by quantifying the extrapolation complexity via the 2-Wasserstein distance between two function spaces and propose a new behavior of bias-variance trade-off for extrapolation with respect to model capacity. Subsequently, we develop a complete workflow, including extrapolation determination, and we propose five reliable learning methods that guarantee a safe prediction under extrapolation by requiring additional information—the governing PDEs of the system or sparse new observations. The proposed methods are based on either fine-tuning a pre-trained DeepONet or multifidelity learning. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework for various types of parametric PDEs. Our systematic comparisons provide practical guidelines for selecting a proper extrapolation method depending on the available information, desired accuracy, and required inference speed. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

We propose a frustration-free model for the Moore-Read quantum Hall state on sufficiently thin cylinders with circumferences ≲7 magnetic lengths. While the Moore-Read Hamiltonian involves complicated long-range interactions between triplets of electrons in a Landau level, our effective model is a simpler one-dimensional chain of qubits with deformed Fredkin gates. We show that the ground state of the Fredkin model has high overlap with the Moore-Read wave function and accurately reproduces the latter's entanglement properties. Moreover, we demonstrate that the model captures the dynamical response of the Moore-Read state to a geometric quench, induced by suddenly changing the anisotropy of the system. We elucidate the underlying mechanism of the quench dynamics and show that it coincides with the linearized bimetric field theory. The minimal model introduced here can be directly implemented as a first step towards quantum simulation of the Moore-Read state, as we demonstrate by deriving an efficient circuit approximation to the ground state and implementing it on an IBM quantum processor.

A Modified Recommended Food Score Is Associated with a Lower Incidence of High Blood Pressure in Middle-Aged and Older Korean Men: The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study

Objectives:This cohort study investigated the association between the modified RFS (Recommended Food Score) and incident high blood pressure in Korean adults from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). Methods:We prospectively analysed 2,854 (1,028 men and 1,556 women) participants aged 40–69 years without high blood pressure at baseline during a 16-year follow-up period. A dish-based, semi-quantitative, 103-item food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intakes at baseline. The modified RFS (a total of 65 points) is based on the reported consumption of foods recommended in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet modified for Korean foods. High blood pressure included hypertension and prehypertension, also known as stage 1 hypertension (a systolic blood pressure ≥120 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mmHg). Cox proportional hazards model was used to examine the association between modified RFS scores and the risk of incident high blood pressure. Results:A total of 1,663 participants (761 men and 902 women) developed high blood pressure during an average follow-up of 87 months (range 17–183 months). The modified RFS was positively correlated with the DASH diet score in men (r = 0.6492; p < 0.0001) and women (r = 0.7291; p < 0.0001), respectively. Men with the highest quintile of the modified RFS had a 24% lower incidence of high blood pressure than those with the lowest quintile (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.76, 95% confidence interval = 0.60–0.96, p-trend = 0.0218). However, there was no association between modified RFS and incident high blood pressure in women. Conclusions:A higher modified RFS was associated with a reduced risk of incident high blood pressure in middle-aged and older Korean men. Further prospective studies of larger scale or intervention studies are needed to confirm these findings. Promotion of the Glutathione Defense System From Aronia Berry Extract With Acute Aerobic Exercise: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial in Healthy Adults.

Objectives:This study aimed to examine the protective effects of Aronia melanocarna berry extract (ABE) supplementation against the acute aerobic exercise (AAE) – induced oxidative stress in healthy subjects. Methods:A 8-week, randomized, double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled trial were conducted with 70 healthy middle-aged adults. We assessed a battery of AAE-induced oxidate stress biomarkers at pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 30-min post-exercise. The AAE challenge model, as a treadmill exercise for 30 minutes at 60% VO2max, was applied to load oxidative stress at the end of the study. A linear mixed-effect model was used to test differences of safety and effectiveness between two groups and Pearson’s correlation coefficients assessed the statistical association. Results:The AAE-induced time course-dependent oxidative stress was well-observed in the placebo group regarding the glutathione peroxidase activity and glutathione availability for antioxidant defense; and erythrocyte malondialdehyde, interleukin-6, and lactate levels for oxidative damage. Meanwhile, the ABE supplementation improved the glutathione defense system by increasing glutathione availability and glutathione peroxidase activity during exercise and post-exercise recovery periods. In addition, the scatter plot and linear regression analysis revealed strong negative correlations of GSH availability with oxidized LDL and erythrocyte malonaldehyde levels. Conclusions:These finding suggest ABE supplementation might affect to improve antioxidant defense mechanism in healthy adults with low fruit and vegetable intake. AbstractObjectivesKorean mint (Agastache rugosa; KM) is a medicinal plant of the Labiatae mint family that exerts a wide range of health benefits including anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. The beneficial health effects of KM have been associated with the presence of polyphenols. However, the bioavailability of KM is still poorly evaluated to understand how bioactive compounds are absorbed and reach systemic circulation. The objective of this study was to investigate how the dominant KM polyphenols are differently available in circulation in vitro and in vivo. MethodsIn a randomized, double-blind, crossover design, 10 healthy females consumed either placebo or KM extract. Blood samples have collected before and 15, 30, 60,120, 180, and 360 min for the analysis of serum polyphenol concentration by ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS). Additionally, the bioaccessibility of KM polyphenols was assessed after in vitro digestion using Caco-2 monolayers grown in permeable filter supports. ResultsThe UPLC-MS/MS analysis showed the dominant components in the extract were rosmarinic acid (RA), acacetin (AC) and acacetin 7-glucoside (tilianin, TA). Following KM extract consumption, the absorption curve of RA, TA, and AC changed over 6 h. RA and TA were most abundant 2–3 h post-initial ingestion with a gradual decrease afterward. By contrast, the appearance of AC in serum was delayed to 2 h but continuously increased until 6 h post-ingestion. In vitro data with absorptive intestinal cells indicated that AC and TA gradually decreased in the apical side, and correspondent enrichments were found in the basal side. RA was not transported in quantifiable concentration. ConclusionsThese findings suggest that KM polyphenols are readily available in circulation, providing a potential direct role in health benefits. The large amounts of by-products generated in the coffee industry are a problem for a sustainable agro-industry. The aim of this work was to investigate the occurrence of phenolic compounds in organic coffee husks and to evaluate their potential as a source of bioactive dietary components. To achieve this objective, three extracts were prepared, namely extractable polyphenols (EP), hydrolyzable non-extractable polyphenols (HNEP) and non-extractable polyphenols (NEP). These extracts were characterized and evaluated for their bioactive properties after simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The results show that the extraction process affects the occurrence of phenols from coffee peels, especially for caffeic acid, gallic acid, and chlorogenic acid. The condensed phenols and polyphenols found in the extracts and digests not only showed antioxidant properties against ABTS, FRAP and DPPH radicals, but also had remarkable bioavailability and anticoagulant potential. These results highlight the potential health benefits of phytochemicals from coffee husks and open new perspectives for the use of such compounds in dietary supplements. © 2023, The Authors. We study the variability of vertically stacked gate-all-around silicon nanosheet (GAA Si NS) complementary field-effect transistors (CFETs). The process variation effect (PVE), the work function fluctuation (WKF), and the random dopant fluctuation (RDF) of CFETs are statistically estimated using an experimentally validated device simulation technique. Among five factors of PVE, the channel thickness (T Nch /T Pch ), the channel width (W ch ), and the gate length (L G ) are significant. Owing to superior GAA channel control and increased effective gate area, both WKF and RDF are suppressed. Notably, the PVE on both N-/P-FETs of GAA Si CFET induce the largest off-state current fluctuations of 80% and 278%, respectively, because the device characteristic is very sensitive to the layer thickness and width of channel.

As Metaverse emerges as the next-generation Internet paradigm, the ability to efficiently generate content is paramount. AI-Generated Content (AIGC) emerges as a key solution, yet the resource-intensive nature of large Generative AI (GAI) models presents challenges. To address this issue, we introduce an AIGC-as-a-Service (AaaS) architecture, which deploys AIGC models in wireless edge networks to ensure broad AIGC services accessibility for Metaverse users. Nonetheless, an important aspect of providing personalized user experiences requires carefully selecting AIGC Service Providers (ASPs) capable of effectively executing user tasks, which is complicated by environmental uncertainty and variability. Addressing this gap in current research, we introduce the AI-Generated Optimal Decision (AGOD) algorithm, a diffusion model-based approach for generating the optimal ASP selection decisions. Integrating AGOD with Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), we develop the Deep Diffusion Soft Actor-Critic (D2SAC) algorithm, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of ASP selection. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that D2SAC outperforms seven leading DRL algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed AGOD algorithm has the potential for extension to various optimization problems in wireless networks, positioning it as a promising approach for future research on AIGC-driven services. Greywater as a Water Resource in Agriculture: The Acceptance and Perception from Brazilian Agricultural Technicians

The use of greywater for agricultural purposes can contribute to water conservation, the resilience of family farming food systems, and food security, especially in regions with higher water deficits. However, the social acceptance of this practice has been poorly evaluated systematically and hinders the implementation due to the resulting uncertainty among decision-makers and other stakeholders in the management of alternative sources of water in agriculture. This study was designed in the concept of the Theory of Planned Behavior (Attitude and the Perceived Behavioral Control) to investigate the acceptance and perception of risks and benefits of the use of greywater as an alternative water resource in agriculture and the personal environmental values and beliefs (New Ecological Paradigm scale) by 300 professionals of agricultural technicians from 12 meso-regions in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. In general, the public showed a positive attitude toward reusing greywater in agriculture. The willingness to consume food grown with greywater was the least positive aspect (59.3%) compared to the willingness to perform the practice (87.7%) and the belief in reusing greywater as an alternative water resource (81.7%). The result indicates a great potential for using greywater as an alternative water resource for irrigating non-food crops. The environmental position of the studied public was not a decisive guarantee for a final attitude towards the use of greywater in agriculture. The study identified a clear relationship between a positive acceptance to support the development of public policies for water reuse (81.7%) and the interviewee's local contexts of water scarcity, lack of sanitation, and socioeconomic conditions. This study contributes to the discussions about water reuse in agriculture and subsidies for developing public policies for wastewater reuse. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
