Limited therapeutic options are available to effectively preventing atherosclerosis. Inflammatory endothelial cells, foamy macrophages, and high protease levels contribute to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Studies have shown that catechins effectively scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibit monocyte adhesion and reduce cholesterol levels, while nitric oxide (NO) enhances endothelial function. However, due to the poor stability and bioavailability of catechins and the toxicity from the burst release of current synthetic small molecules NO donor, effective delivery of these bioactive compounds to treat atherosclerosis is still a challenge. Herein, a catechin/protein-based NO donor co-delivery nanosystem was designed for combinatorial anti-atherosclerotic therapy. We engineered a (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)/NO-releasing protein co-assembled nanocomplex based on specific catechin-protein interactions. Furthermore, the nanocomplex was surface modified with fucoidan (Fu), a sulfated polysaccharide with anti-inflammatory activity. This nanocomplex exhibits sensitivity to ROS, pH, and enzymes. The Fu-functionalized nanoparticles specifically accumulates in atherosclerotic plaques mediated by P-selectin on inflamed endothelial cells and scavenger receptor A (SR-A) on foamy macrophages. Under environmental stimuli that simulate the condition of plaque, the nanoparticles are readily activated to release EGCG and NO in response to excess ROS and high protease levels, exerting the multi-synergistic anti-atherosclerosic effects on reducing monocyte adhesion, promoting NO production to proliferate endothelial cells, lowering ROS levels, and decreasing the foam cell formation in vitro, and reducing lipid accumulation, plaque size, and inflammatory cytokines release in high-fat diet-induced atherosclerosis model in ApoE−/− mice. In light of the recent data for B¯(s)→D(s)(*)P and B¯(s)→D(s)V decays, we perform a model-independent phenomenological analysis in the presence of quasielastic rescattering. With the Wilson coefficients including contributions beyond the standard model, the lifetimes of the B meson and Bd0−B¯d0 mixing are investigated to clarify correlations among the observables. We show that parameter regions for quasielastic rescattering, the size of color-suppressed tree amplitudes, and new physics are constrained due to the lifetime data. As a consequence, it is revealed that this scenario can be tested by the future LHCb measurement of the width difference in Bd0−B¯d0 mixing and semileptonic CP asymmetry.

Uniqueness of weak solutions to the primitive equations in some anisotropic spaces

We consider the both 3D and 2D viscous primitive equations for ocean in the isothermal setting. While strong global well-posedness of the viscous primitive equations for large data in H 1 has already proved, the uniqueness of the weak solutions of Leray–Hope type for given initial data in L 2 remains an outstanding open problem. In this paper, we establish a new conditional uniqueness result for weak solutions to the primitive equations, that is, if a weak solution belongs some scaling invariant function spaces, and satisfies some additional assumptions, then the weak solution is unique. In particular, our result can be obtained as different one from z -weak solutions framework by adopting some anisotropic approaches with the homogeneous toroidal Besov spaces. As an application of the proof, we establish the energy equality for weak solutions in the uniqueness class given in the main theorem.

Since the end of 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 virus known as COVID-19 has spread rapidly around the world, forcing many governments to impose restrictive blocking or lockdown to combat the pandemic. With locomotion restriction of people in almost of countries of the world, workers and students needed to keep their activities at home. As a result, people's behavior, habits, and the way they started using the Internet changed significantly. Like professionals of offices, the younger played an important role in this behavior, especially in the type of resources used by them. As result, the characterization and traffic of communication networks were affected in some way. In this perspective article, we join from many available studies about the COVID-19 effect at networks and investigate the effects on the Internet traffic of using services such as video streaming, video conferencing, and gaming during 2020's months of the pandemic. © 2021, CC BY.

This study delves into the evaluation of the Komodo dragons Adaptive Conservation program (KACP) at Komodo National Park in Indonesia through Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). It aims to understand how the programs components align with community priorities and assess its effectiveness. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research analyzes community perceptions of KACP's critical elements, spanning eco-tourism initiatives to environmental protection strategies. The community is categorized into local advocates, eco-tourism enthusiasts, and eco-community harmonizers, identifying how each group perceives and interacts with various facets of KACP. The findings reveal significant differences in perceptions of importance and performance among these groups, providing insights into areas of strength and those needing improvement. Additionally, the study includes an analysis of demographic influences on these perceptions through Logit and Probit models, aiming to understand the impacts across different community segments. The results highlight the necessity for an adaptive and responsive design in conservation efforts, considering community expectations and ecological impacts. Despite offering comprehensive insights, the study acknowledges limitations in the demographic scope and suggests future research directions, such as longitudinal studies and an expanded analysis of variables. These findings offer critical guidance for policymakers and conservation practitioners to enhance conservation programs’ effectiveness and community alignment, emphasizing the need to adapt to the challenges and changes introduced by KACP. © 2024 Elsevier GmbH

Interest in cryo-Electron Microscopy (EM) imaging has skyrocketed in recent years due to its pristine views of macromolecules and materials. As advances in instrumentation and computing algorithms spurred this progress, there is renewed focus to address specimen-related challenges. Here we contribute a microchip-based toolkit to perform complementary structural and biochemical analysis on low-molecular weight proteins. As a model system, we used the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein (48 kDa) due to its stability and important role in therapeutic development. Cryo-EM structures of the N protein monomer revealed a flexible N-terminal "top hat"motif and a helical-rich C-terminal domain. To complement our structural findings, we engineered microchip-based immunoprecipitation assays that led to the discovery of the first antibody binding site on the N protein. The data also facilitated molecular modeling of a variety of pandemic and common cold-related coronavirus proteins. Such insights may guide future pandemic-preparedness protocols through immuno-engineering strategies to mitigate viral outbreaks. This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Recent progress on photoinduced phase transitions in materials from first-principles calculations

The interplay between light and matter is a crucial field in condensed matter physics, which not only gives rise to numerous fascinating physical phenomena, but also provides the physical foundations for the development of many modern technologies. When light interacts with a material, the excited electrons drive the system into non-equilibrium states through various mechanisms. In the evolutionary process from the non-equilibrium state to the equilibrium state, the properties of the material undergo dramatic changes, leading to phase transitions in its electronic, crystal and magnetic structures. Thanks to the rapid development of computational methods, more efforts have been paid for exploring the physics in the photoinduced phase transitions using numerical calculations approaches. In this article, we summarize the recent progress on the study of photoinduced phase transitions using real-time time-dependent density functional theory calculations. We first review the photoinduced phase transitions of electronic structure after photoexcitation. In addition, we discuss the phonon excitation during structural phase transitions, such as the sequential phonon excitation at different subprocesses of the transitions and the specific phonon excitation contributing to particular phase transitions. Furthermore, we introduce the self-amplification effect caused by the synergy between carrier relaxation and lattice deformation during structural phase transitions. Moreover, we also address the responses of the magnetic properties in materials stimulated by an external optical field. Finally, we offer some perspectives on the future development of this active field.

Gapless symmetry-protected topological phase of quantum antiferromagnets on anisotropic triangular strip

We study a three-leg spin-1/2 ladder with geometrically frustrated interleg interactions. We call this model an anisotropic triangular-strip (ATS) model. We numerically and field-theoretically show that its ground state belongs to a gapless symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. The numerical approach is based on density-matrix renormalization group analyses of the entanglement entropy and the entanglement spectrum. Whereas the entanglement entropy exhibits a critical behavior, the entanglement spectrum is nontrivially degenerate. These entanglement properties imply that the ground state is a gapless topological phase. We investigate the ATS model using a quantum field theory to support the numerical findings. When the frustrated interchain interaction is deemed a perturbation acting on the three spin chains, the frustrated interchain interaction almost isolates the second chain from the other two chains. However, at the same time, the second chain mediates a ferromagnetic interaction between the first and third chains. Therefore, the ground state of the ATS model is a gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid weakly coupled to a spin-1 Haldane chain with irrelevant interactions. Last but not least, we show that the gapless SPT phase of the ATS model is a symmetry-protected critical phase. We point out that the symmetry protection of criticality is essential in characterization of the gapless SPT phase. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Image segmentation is an essential component in many different types of computer vision systems. Image segmentation is used in order to identify objects and boundaries within pictures. It is important to note that the success of recognition algorithms is heavily dependent on the quality of the picture segmentation, and there is yet no technique that can universally segment images. Boundary detection has a long history of being recognised as one of the most difficult challenges in the fields of image processing and pattern analysis, in particular, when it comes to applications in medical imaging. The clarity of the picture is being muddled by more information, which is the source of the problem's complexity. The creation of segmentation algorithms for medical pictures is an active field of study, and segmentation algorithms are meant to account for a variety of factors, including noise, intensity inhomogeneity, poor contrast between the lesion and the surrounding skin, and so on. There is currently no active contour model that combines the locally statistical property of being more noise-resistant, in which the intensities in the transformed domain have less overlapping in the statistics, and the locally image fitting property of extracting the local image information in order to be able to segment images with intensity inhomogeneity. This is because there is no such model. So the proposed work includes Ant colony optimization based double threshold segmentation in medical images. Performance of the proposed algorithm is more efficient, reliable and accurate than the existing algorithm. Performance parameters such as segmentation accuracy, error rate, and Dice co-efficient are used in order to conduct the evaluation of the proposed work.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the Barcheek trevally,Carangoides plagiotaeniaBleeker, 1857 from Beqa lagoon, Fiji Islands, was determined by high-throughput sequencing (HTS). Its mitogenome (16,551 bp) contained the typical 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNAs, 22 tRNAs, along with two non-coding regions: control region (D-loop) and the origin of light-strand replication (OL). In its mitogenome, one unusual start codon (GTG) was identified inCOIand incomplete stop codons (TA-/T–) were predicted in seven PCGs includingND2, COII, ATP6, COIII, ND3, *** phylogenetic tree revealed thatC. plagiotaeniais sister toC. bajadwith 88.75% nucleotide identity in 13 PCGs and 90.49% in the complete mitogenomes.
