Performance evaluation of LSTM neural networks for consumption prediction

Energy consumption and energy efficiency are topics that have attracted the attention of researchers in recent years, in order to seek sustainable solutions for energy production and reduction of costs, aiming to provide a balance between development and protection of natural resources. One of the alternatives that have obtained satisfactory results is the use of technologies based on Internet of Things (IoT) and Deep Learning systems. Based on this, we assessed the performance of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks in time series electric energy consumption prediction, for a forecasting module of an IoT system. Three time series were used and we compared LSTM to the algorithms Extreme Boost Gradient and Random Forest. computational results indicate that the LSTM model showed a tendency of better RMSE performance in the first data set, and statistically significant better results in other two data sets, according to the Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.0001 in both cases). Thus, the proposed model was implemented and validated from experiments, presenting accurate prediction for monitoring and estimating power consumption, being applicable to Energy Efficiency and decision making. © 2022 The Authors

In the absence of a suspect or PoI the forensic aim is investigative, and the focus is one of discerning what candidate genotypes best explain the evidence. In traditional bulk systems, the list of candidate genotypes may become vast if the sample contains DNA from many donors or the information from a minor contributor is swamped by that of major contributors, leading to lower evidential value for a true donor’s contribution and, as a result, possibly overlooked or inefficient investigative *** developments in single-cell analysis offer a way forward, by producing data capable of discriminating between genotypes. This is accomplished by first clustering single-cell data by similarity without reference to a known genotype. With good clustering it is reasonable to assume that the scEPGs in a cluster are of a single contributor. With that assumption we determine the probability of a cluster’s content given each possible genotype at each locus, which is then used to determine the posterior probability mass distribution for all genotypes by application of Bayes’ rule. A decision criterion is then applied such that the sum of the ranked probabilities of all genotypes falling in the set is at least . This is the credible genotype set and is the one used to inform database search criteria and, thus, investigative *** demonstrate the salience of single cell analysis by performance testing a set of 630 previously constructed admixtures containing up to 5 donors of balanced and unbalanced contributions. We use scEPGs that were generated by isolating single cells, employing a direct-to-PCR extraction treatment, amplifying STRs that are compliant with existing national databases and applying post-PCR treatments that elicit a detection limit of one DNA copy. We determined that, for these test data, 99.3% of the true genotypes are included in the 99.8% credible set, regardless of the number of donors that comprised the mixture. Exotic forms of wave control have been emerging by engineering matter in space and time. In this framework, temporal photonic interfaces, i.e., abrupt changes in the electromagnetic properties of a material, have been shown to induce temporal scattering phenomena dual to spatial reflection and refraction, at the basis of photonic time crystals and space-time metamaterials. Despite decades-old theoretical studies on these topics, and recent experimental demonstrations, the careful modeling of these phenomena has been lagging behind. Here, we develop from first principles a rigorous model of the electrodynamics of temporal photonic interfaces, highlighting the crucial role of the mechanisms driving time variations. We demonstrate that the boundary conditions and conservation laws associated with temporal scattering may substantially deviate from those commonly employed in the literature, based on their microscopic implementation. Our results open new vistas for both fundamental investigations over light-matter interactions in time-varying structures and for the prospect of their future implementations and applications in optics and photonics. © 2024, CC BY.

Mesenchymal stromal/stem cell (MSC) therapies are currently being explored for dental pulp regeneration. As the therapeutic effects of MSCs in tissue repair are mediated mainly through the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) including exosomes, we investigated here the cellular processes and molecular mechanisms modulated by MSC exosomes in dental pulp regeneration. Using dental pulp cell (DPC) cultures, we demonstrated that MSC exosomes could increase DPC migration, proliferation, and odontogenic differentiation. The enhancement of these cellular processes was mediated through exosomal CD73-mediated adenosine receptor activation of AKT and ERK signaling. Consistent with these observations, MSC exosomes increased the expression of dentin matrix proteins and promoted the formation of dentin-like tissue and bridge-like structures in a rat pulp defect model. These effects were comparable to that of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) treatment. MSC exosomes also yielded recellularized pulp-dentin tissues in the root canal of endodontically-treated human premolars, following subcutaneous implantation in the mouse dorsum. Together, our findings suggest that MSC exosomes could exert a multi-faceted effect on DPC functions including migration, proliferation and odontogenic differentiation to promote dental pulp regeneration. This study provides the basis for development of MSC exosomes as a cell-free MSC therapeutic alternative for pulp-dentin regeneration. © 2023

Nowadays, schools are trying to insert knowledge and learning about sustainability issues and environmental conservation in the academic context from an early age. It is also observed the use of information technology with new didactic and ludic resources that can encourage elementary and high school students to obtain knowledge about sustainability. To this end, this research presents some results using Educational Robotics, Gestalt, and information technology, which students received from a Brazilian public elementary school. In this study, after attending workshops on sustainability, the students developed robotic resources to help them with sustainability-related knowledge. The resources were tested according to their objectives: a mobile robot that recognizes the food and shows its footprint and a box with gas sensors to identify if food is in consumable condition or should be recycled. The experiment was very successful and is in a continuous application phase.

Finite-size effects on the convergence time in continuous-opinion dynamics

We study finite-size effects on the convergence time in a continuous-opinion dynamics model. In the model, each individual's opinion is represented by a real number on a finite interval, e.g., [0,1], and a uniformly randomly chosen individual updates its opinion by partially mimicking the opinion of a uniformly randomly chosen neighbor. We numerically find that the characteristic time to the convergence increases as the system size increases according to a particular functional form in the case of lattice networks. In contrast, unless the individuals perfectly copy the opinion of their neighbors in each opinion updating, the convergence time is approximately independent of the system size in the case of regular random graphs, uncorrelated scale-free networks, and complete graphs. We also provide a mean-field analysis of the model to understand the case of the complete graph.

About seven months after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first vaccine against the disease was approved for emergency use. Since then, twenty-three more vaccines have been approved, while more than three hundred are in development. Despite being one of the fastest vaccines ever created, several questions about it remain open. computational models can be useful to answer some of these questions. This paper aims to evaluate whether a computer model previously used to reproduce the effects of the yellow fever vaccine in the body is also capable of reproducing the effects of a distinct vaccine: ChAdOx1 nCoV-19. Preliminary results show that the model is a promising tool to achieve this goal since it was able to reproduce the antibody curves observed in individuals vaccinated with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19. © 2021 IEEE.

ABACUS (Atomic-orbital Based Ab-initio Computation at USTC) is an open-source software for first-principles electronic structure calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. It mainly features density functional theory (DFT) and is compatible with both plane-wave basis sets and numerical atomic orbital basis sets. ABACUS serves as a platform that facilitates the integration of various electronic structure methods, such as Kohn-Sham DFT, stochastic DFT, orbital-free DFT, and real-time time-dependent DFT, etc. In addition, with the aid of high-performance computing, ABACUS is designed to perform efficiently and provide massive amounts of first-principles data for generating general-purpose machine learning potentials, such as DPA models. Furthermore, ABACUS serves as an electronic structure platform that interfaces with several AI-assisted algorithms and packages, such as DeePKS-kit, DeePMD, DP-GEN, DeepH, DeePTB, etc. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. We report ultrastrong coupling of the cyclotron resonance of a two-dimensional electron gas in a GaAs quantum well to terahertz cavity photons under extreme confinement to the nanometer scale. This was realized by an array of nano-slots fabricated close to the quantum well layer on the GaAs substrate. Our terahertz magnetospectroscopic measurements revealed two polariton branches as a function of applied magnetic field. While the photon-like part of the two polariton branches was clearly observed, the matter-like part was generally elusive. Our electromagnetic simulations quantitatively reproduce our observation for the upper-polariton branch. However, for the lower-polariton branch, our simulations predict a pronounced resonance, which was absent in experimental spectra. This discrepancy may be a consequence of the breakdown of the dipole approximation in this extreme confinement situation.
