The main objective of this study is to create a land cover/land use (LC/LU) map of a part in the Izmir metropolitan city in Turkey, based on an enhanced Urban Atlas nomenclature, using geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) techniques. For this purpose, high-resolution SPOT 7 images from different seasons with a 1.5 m spatial resolution were used as the main earth observation (EO) data, and then rule-based object-oriented classification methods were applied to create the LC/LU map. Open-source geospatial data such as Open Street Map (OSM) and Wikimapia were also integrated into the classification to better identify some LC/LU classes such as Discontinuous Medium Density Urban Fabric, Fast Transit Roads and Associated Land, Airport as well as increase the total accuracy of the classification. In total, 23 LC/LU classes are determined in the study area with different accuracy values. An area-based accuracy assessment for random areas was performed to determine the classification accuracy of the obtained LC/LU map. Particulate matter (PM) is one of the most hazardous atmospheric pollutants. Several plant species show high potential to reduce air pollutants and are widely used as green belts to provide clean outdoor spaces for human well-being. However, high PM concentrations cause physiological changes and stress in plants. In this study, 11 species of Thai native perennial plants were exposed to PM generated from tobacco smoke. Wrightia religiosa (Teijsm. & Binn.) Benth. ex Kurz, Bauhinia purpurea DC. ex Walp. and Tectona grandis L.f. reduced PM effectively (which is in the typical range of 43.95 to 52.97%) compared to other plant species. In addition, the responses of perennial plants under PM stress at the proteomic level were also evaluated. Proteomic analysis of these three plant species showed that plants respond negatively to high PM concentrations, such as reducing several photosynthetic-related proteins and increasing plant stress response proteins. To improve PM phytoremediation efficiency and reduce plant stress from PM, perennial plant–microbe interactions were investigated. W. religiosa was inoculated with Acinetobacter indicus PS1, and high biosurfactant-producing strains clearly showed a higher PM removal efficiency than non-inoculated plants (9.48, 9.5 and 12.6% for PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10, respectively). Inoculating W. religiosa with A. indicus PS1 maintained chlorophyll a and b concentrations. Moreover, the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration of W. religiosa inoculated with A. indicus PS1 was lower than that of non-inoculated W. religiosa. The leaf wax content (µg/cm2) and biosurfactant (µg/cm2) of W. religiosa inoculated with A. indicus PS1 were also higher than those of non-inoculated W. religiosa. This study clearly showed that inoculating plants with A. indicus PS1 can help plants remediate PM and improve their PM stress response. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

In this work, we reported experimental investigations on third-order optical properties of aqueous colloidal dispersions of silver nanocubes (Ag-NCs) and Ag-Au hollow nanostructures. The hollow bimetallic are nanoboxes, that were synthesized by galvanic substitution using silver nanocubes as templates, inserting silver with gold in molar ratios of 1.5 and 3.0 mL. This process adjusted tuning the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) compared to the original Ag-NCs nanocubes. Femtosecond Z-scan measurements performed at 1040 nm, 350fs and laser intensities from 99.7 - 279 GW/cm2 shows negative nonlinear refraction for both nanocube and nanoboxes colloids, attributed to hot electron generation. Solvent effects are simultaneously suppressed of the nanostructures. On the other hand, the non-linear absorption observed for bimetallic nanoboxes shows the presence of saturated absorption (SA), but the Ag-NCs do not show a non-linear absorption signal. Therefore, our experimental results provide a reliable reference for the application of these bimetallic nanostructures as active media in nonlinear photonic devices. © 2024, The Authors. This work describes the investigation of planar waveguide crossings using metaheuristic methods associated with the two-dimensional finite element method (2D-FEM). An optimization and measurement process are performed on the power transmission and crosstalk of the waveguide crossings and then the values calculated are compared with other studies in the literature. The best performing adjusted crossing is optimally designed by applying the following metaheuristics: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), and a hybrid algorithm combining the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure and Simulated Annealing (GRASP-SA). Transmission efficiency results higher than 97% and crosstalk below the -50 dB over a wide wavelength range, with a footprint of $\mathbf{4.9}\times \mathbf{4.9}\ \boldsymbol{\mu} \mathbf{m}^{\mathbf{2}}$ .

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2025, CC BY.

Medical artificial intelligence (AI) systems need to learn to recognize synonyms or paraphrases describing the same anatomy, disease, treatment, etc. to better understand real-world clinical documents. Existing linguistic resources focus on variants at the word or sentence level. To handle linguistic variations on a broader scale, we proposed the Medical Text Radiology Report section Japanese version (MedTxt-RR-JA), the first clinical comparable corpus. MedTxt-RR-JA was built by recruiting nine radiologists to diagnose the same 15 lung cancer cases in Radiopaedia, an open-access radiological repository. The 135 radiology reports in MedTxt-RR-JA were shown to contain word-, sentence-and document-level variations maintaining similarity of contents. MedTxt-RR-JA is also the first publicly available Japanese radiology report corpus that would help to overcome poor data availability for Japanese medical AI systems. Moreover, our methodology can be applied widely to building clinical corpora without privacy concerns. © 2022 International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and IOS Press.

In this paper we consider the estimation of unknown parameters in Bayesian inverse problems. In most cases of practical interest, there are several barriers to performing such estimation, This includes a numerical approximation of a solution of a differential equation and, even if exact solutions are available, an analytical intractability of the marginal likelihood and its associated gradient, which is used for parameter estimation. The focus of this article is to deliver unbiased estimates of the unknown parameters, that is, stochastic estimators that, in expectation, are equal to the maximizer of the marginal likelihood, and possess no numerical approximation error. Based upon the ideas of [4] we develop a new approach for unbiased parameter estimation for Bayesian inverse problems. We prove unbiasedness and establish numerically that the associated estimation procedure is faster than the current state-of-the-art methodology for this problem. We demonstrate the performance of our methodology on a range of problems which include a PDE and ODE. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Neural Networks (NN) model which is incorporated in the control system design has been studied, and the results show better performance than the mathematical model approach. However, some studies consider that only offline NN model learning and does not use the online NN model learning directly on the control system. As a result, the controller's performance decreases due to changes in the system environment from time to time. The Reinforcement Learning (RL) method has been investigated intensively, especially Model-based RL (Mb-RL) to predict system dynamics. It has been investigated and performs well in making the system more robust to environmental changes by enabling online learning. This paper proposes online learning of local dynamics using the Mb-RL method by utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. We consider Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme as an agent of the Mb-RL method to control the regulatory trajectory objectives with a random shooting policy to search for the minimum objective function. A nonlinear Mass Spring Damper (NMSD) system with parameter-varying linear inertia is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the system can effectively control high-oscillating nonlinear systems with good performance.

Ischemic stroke often leads to neurological deficits, including olfactory dysfunction, which can significantly diminish quality of life. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for enhancing post-stroke recovery, although the molecular mechanisms, particularly regarding gene expression change, are not yet fully understood. This study investigates the long-term effects of photothrombosis (PT) on olfactory function and the olfactory bulb (OB) microenvironment, with a focus on PBM’s efficacy during both early and late phases. In a mouse OB PT stroke model, PBM therapy (808-nm laser, 40 J/cm² fluence, 325 mW/cm², 2 min daily) was applied from day 2 to day 7 post-PT. Olfactory function was monitored from pre-stroke through day 28 using the buried food test (BFT), and MRI scans were performed on days 7 and 28 to assess tissue damage. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) were conducted on day 7 to evaluate gene expression changes, with additional RT-qPCR analyses performed on day 28. PBM significantly accelerated olfactory function recovery by day 14, with full recovery maintained through day 28. Despite functional recovery, MRI results indicated persistent infarction at 28 days. RNA-seq identified upregulation of neuroprotective genes, including Gpr39 and Or4m1, following PBM treatment, suggesting enhanced gene expression related to acute-phase recovery. However, the impact of PBM on gene expression and functional recovery appeared to wane in the later stages of recovery. These findings underscore PBM’s potential to enhance early-stage recovery in ischemic stroke, though its benefits may be more limited in the chronic phase. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.
