The effect of real-time pose recognition on badminton learning performance

Badminton is a very popular subject in Physical Education (PE). Many students enroll badminton courses in every semester which pose a tremendous teaching load to the instructors. The one-on-one guiding/feedback time provided by the instructor to each student is also greatly reduced. To overcome this challenge, some studies have tried to adopt pose recognition technique in teaching badminton. However, the lack of mobility and recognition accuracy problems hinder its applicability. To address this issue, a new pose recognition technique, OpenPose, was employed to develop a real-time pose recognition badminton teaching APP in this study. The APP was then installed on a mobile device to enhance badminton smash skill learning performance. The scores distribution of the experimental group shows majority of students achieved satisfactory performance, this implies the badminton teaching APP is helpful to all students no matter what their initial skill levels are. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Characterizing the mechanical response of metallic glasses to uniaxial tension using a spring network model

A coarse-grained spring network model is proposed for the prediction of the mechanical response of metallic glasses as a function of the microstructure prior to loading. This model describes the mechanical response of metallic glasses using a network of parallel springs that can break and reform, mimicking atomic rearrangements during deformation. We compare predictions of the spring network model for stress versus strain to results from numerical simulations of athermal quasistatic, uniaxial tensile deformation of Cu50Zr50 metallic glasses using Lennard-Jones (LJ) and embedded atom method (EAM) atomic interactions. We show that both the LJ and EAM models possess qualitatively similar stress σ versus strain γ curves. By specifying five parameters [ultimate strength, strain at ultimate strength, slopes of σ(γ) at γ=0 and at large strain, and strain at fracture where σ=0], we demonstrate that the spring network model can accurately describe the form of the stress-strain curves during uniaxial tension for the computational studies of Cu50Zr50, as well as recent experimental studies of several Zr-based metallic glasses.

Renewable energy resources emerge as a sustainable alternative to augmenting the energy supply of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platforms. However, the increased generation based on converter-interfaced energy decreases the system-equivalent inertia constant, which becomes more susceptible to frequency deviations. This paper proposes and evaluates the performance of the combined frequency-voltage-var control to mitigate frequency variation in a typical FPSO unit with penetration of wind power systems. The control functions are communication-free and embedded in two active front-end variable frequency drives (AFE- VFDs) set on water injection pumps. The FPSO's electrical power system model is developed in MATLAB/Simulink®. Comparative results with the AFE-VFD equipped with volt-var, freq-var, and combined freq-volt-var functions are shown to highlight the merits of the proposed solution.

Learning activities are an indicator of the learner's desire to learn during the learning process. The pattern of learner action is related to learning activities. In this case, in extracting the learning process, it is necessary to collect a lot of data through analysis of the learning process. The purpose of this study is to recommend and report the performance of an activity tracking system equipped with visual artifacts as an educational data mining approach to analyze action patterns when learners complete the arrangement of program code lines in each programming problem. In this study, data were taken from activity recordings when learners used interactive learning media for a basic programming subject called TOLSYASUPI-EduMed which had problem-solving learning models embedded in their interactions. Learning Analytics is used as a method of this research and data relationships from learner actions during the learning process using the 'if-then' rule. Log data is used for recording and detecting activities carried out by learners. We confirm that the results of the study are based on the findings of the data relationship that if the lines of program code are too long (more than five lines) then almost all learners experience a bottleneck condition. The completion time of each question and the number of iterations in completing the program code lines for each question have also been recorded and have a pattern of connection between the data. The information that has been obtained is then forwarded to teachers or stakeholders as key information to make appropriate feedback to learners based on the results as a means of analyzing and evaluating the programming learning process. © 2022 IEEE.

Foreign Exchange or FOREX trading is not only done on foreign currencies but, FOREX also can be done on several commodities such as Gold, Silver, Oil. Gold is one of the most valuable commodities in the world. Investors began to offer gold as a trading material against foreign currencies. Machine Learning (ML) in the FOREX trading world is usually used to predict future FOREX values. This pilot study aims to see a model from machine learning that has a fairly high level of accuracy in making FOREX predictions. This pilot study using historical data taken from the *** database where the FOREX data taken is FOREX XAU/USD data, with a period year from 2019 until 2021, and the indicator used is Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) technical analysis. The average accuracy obtained after training on the Tree model is 86.3%, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model is 86.6% and the Ensemble model is 86.55%. Testing conducted using machine learning models for Tree, SVM and Ensemble models have the same level of accuracy, which is 88.3%. © 2021 IEEE

The microalgal-based production of fucoxanthin has emerged as an imperative research endeavor due to its antioxidant, and anticancer properties. In this study, three brown marine microalgae, namely Skeletonema costatum, Chaetoceros gracilis, and Pavlova sp., were screened for fucoxanthin production. All strains displayed promising results, with Pavlova sp. exhibiting the highest fucoxanthin content (27.91 mg/g) and productivity (1.16 mg/L·day). Moreover, the influence of various cultivation parameters, such as culture media, salinity, sodium nitrate concentration, inoculum size, light intensity, and iron concentration, were investigated and optimized, resulting in a maximum fucoxanthin productivity of 7.89 mg/L·day. The investigation was further expanded to large-scale outdoor cultivation using 50 L tubular photobioreactors, illustrating the potential of Pavlova sp. and the cultivation process for future commercialization. The biomass and fucoxanthin productivity for the large-scale cultivation were 70.7 mg/L·day and 4.78 mg/L·day, respectively. Overall, the findings demonstrated considerable opportunities for fucoxanthin synthesis via microalgae cultivation and processing. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

In the maintenance and manufacturing practices of equipment in the petrochemical industry, the air carbon arc gouging-ACG is used in the preparation of carbon steel joints to be repaired or joined by welding. However, the Standards impose several restrictions to the use of this cost-effective process to stainless steels. The main concern is the pick-up of carbon and sensitization of the steels against corrosion. Therefore, this paper aimed to evaluate the effect of ACG of AISI 316L steel on its electrochemical and mechanical properties. The repaired/welded joints were studied in three different situations, namely: i) any type of cleaning, ii) brushing and iii) machining after gouging. The 20-mm-thick plate was submerged arc welded. Different regions on cross-section of welds were inspected to assess the degree of sensitization by double-loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (DL-EPR) method, and the risk of intergranular corrosion by oxalic acid etching tests. The electrochemical techniques and mechanical tests (only welded joints) such as tensile, hardness and impact measurements showed no impairing of such properties with the use of ACG, irrespective to the cleaning method used. © ESSC and DUPLEX 2022. EEG and fMRI are complementary, noninvasive technologies for investigating human brain function. These modalities have been used to uncover large-scale functional networks and their disruptions in clinical populations. Given the high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI, integrating these modalities can provide a more holistic understanding of brain activity. This work explores a multimodal source decomposition technique for extracting shared modes of temporal variation between fMRI BOLD signals and EEG spectral power fluctuations in the resting state. The resulting components are then compared between patients with focal epilepsy and controls, revealing multimodal network differences between groups.

Advances in subsea exploration in the oceans to discover new petroleum reservoirs and sometimes different kind of minerals at the seabed in ultra deepwater, continuously introduce new challenges in offshore drilling operations. This motivates the development of increasingly safe maritime operations. In offshore petroleum, a marine drilling riser is the pipe that connects a wellhead at the sea bottom to a drillship at the sea surface, as an access to the wellbore. It serves as a guide for the drilling column with the drill bit and conductor to carry cuttings of rock coming from the wellbore drilling and its construction. Drilling riser is constantly exposed to adversity from the environment, such as waves, sea currents and platform motions induced by waves. These elements of the environment are prevailing factors that can cause a riser failure during deepwater drilling operations with undesirable consequences for the environment. In the present work, key parameters that influence the probability of fatigue failure in a marine drilling riser are identified, and a parametric evaluation with those parameters are carried out. Dynamic behavior of a riser is previously calculated and fatigue damage is estimated. Afterwards, the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) is applied to determine the probability of fatigue failure on the riser. Fundamentals of the procedure are described, and results are illustrated through the analysis for a typical riser in deepwater drilling operation. Parametric evaluations are done observing points considered as critical along the riser length, and looking to the sensitivity of key parameters in the process. For this study, the SN curve from API guidelines is applied and accumulated fatigue damage is estimated from simulations of the stress time series and applying the Palmgren-Miner's rule. Finally, the influence of each parameter in the reliability of fatigue failure is verified and discussions given. Copyright © 2021 by ASME

The voice patterns of gender and age have been used as speaker's identity and implied into sectors such as smart cards, healthcare, banking, and other security access controls. However, age, illness, and ambient noise factors exist challenging issues of voice changes in speech recognition systems to be resolved. This paper presents experiment results of observing those issues, and its goal was obtaining the elements of voice features to secure the speaker's identity. Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) was used to conduct observations on spectral centroid and bandwidth, it has effectively performed capturing features of individual speech signal. The experiment was conducted with data split into three groups: under 13, range 13 to 19, and above 19 years old for both male and female. The results showed that both gender under 13 have centroid voices reached to 98%, age of 13 to 19 remain with centroid reached 98% of bandwidth for male and passing over 100% for female, then above 19 for both genders speak lower with centroid 50% of bandwidth, and male above age of 19 remains to keep centroid about 50% and female changes to 95%. MFCC fits to expose the speech spectrum for the purpose of an analysis frame on specific local spectral properties of voices, and the finding is to form a security line or an individual profiling adoption.
