Rechargeable batteries are essential energy storage devices that power portable devices and electrical vehicles throughout the world. In general, it is thought that the electrochemical performance of rechargeable batteries is mostly determined by the electrodes within them and that the electrolyte plays a relatively passive role. However, ion transport and storage can be greatly influenced by the electrolyte solution structure, specifically, ion solvation within the bulk and ion desolvation across the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Herein, we studied the role of the electrolyte as an active component of electrochemical energy storage devices. We found that with an appropriate electrolyte formulation, ion storage in disordered carbonaceous anode materials can occur spontaneously without externally supplied electrical energy. Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in an ether-based electrolyte demonstrates ‘spontaneous’ ion storage behaviors of adsorbing and inserting the solvated ions utilizing facilitated permeability and wettability of RGO, which results in Coulombic efficiency of ∼145% due to additional charging capacity of ∼180 mAh g −1 during electrochemical processes. The unexpected spontaneous ion storage behavior was extensively investigated using a combination of electrochemical analyses and diagnostics, advanced characterizations, and computational simulation. We believe the spontaneous ion storage behavior offers a new way to further improve the energy efficiency of practical rechargeable batteries.

A vast number of spatiotemporal datasets collected from a wide range of sources has motivated scientists to develop effective approaches to identify interesting patterns hidden in these datasets. In this respect, kernel density estimators, which belong to a class of non-parametric estimators in statistics, have been widely exploited in recent years. With this background, we have developed a novel kernel density estimator aiming to provide accurate analysis results. According to the evaluation with a real spatiotemporal dataset, which collected emergency medical service records in a county in the United States, the proposed kernel density estimator can approximate the probability density function significantly more accurately than a conventional kernel density estimator. Furthermore, we have exploited the proposed kernel density estimator to identify interesting patterns hidden in the real spatiotemporal dataset.

Active packaging made from biodegradable polymers and natural additives appears as an ecological alternative. In addition to having antioxidant activity and enhancing food preservation, it allows mitigating the negative impacts caused by improper disposal. This study pursued to produce biodegradable films based on a polymer blend PBAT/PLA (Ecovio®) using the flat extrusion method. The films were prepared with the incorporation of 5 wt% of powdered turmeric or cinnamon as natural additives. The films obtained, and those reprocessed twice, were characterized in terms of colorimetric, UV light transmittance, water contact angle, water vapor permeability, morphology, mechanical properties, and antioxidant activity. Cinnamon reduced the UV light transmittance and made a surface more hydrophobic. Reprocessing led to greater elongation and maximum load, associated with increased dispersion and distribution, as evidenced in the morphological analysis. The films developed have significant potential for applications in active food packaging, with emphasis on cinnamon-additivated films. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hydroxyalkylation-alkylation (HAA) reaction is a type of C-C coupling technique utilized in the production of furan oligomers, which are potential biofuel precursors. In this study, we present the first application of an acidic MOF, Sulfated MOF-808, in catalyzing the HAA reactions of a series of furan oligomers with high yield and selectivity. Specifically, we focused on the optimization of the HAA between 5-methylfurfural (5-MFUR) and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) by varying different reaction conditions, which afforded a quantitative yield reaching 97% while preventing the self-condensation of 2-MF. The catalyst was also found to be recyclable and can be reused without significant loss in its activity. Lastly, we extended the substrate scope to include benzene-based electrophiles, thereby further proving the versatility of the Sulfated MOF-808 catalyst in the HAA reactions of a variety of starting materials. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

This study proposes the development and evaluation of a new portable multispectral instrument to estimate the leaf nitrogen concentration in maize crops in the field. The MSPAT (Multispectral Soil Plant Analysis Tools) includes the AS7265x sensor, which has 18 bands and covers the spectrum from 410 to 940 nm. The device was designed to be portable, using the ESP32 microcontroller and incorporating such functionality as data storage on a MicroSD card, communication with a smartphone via WiFi and geolocation of the acquired data. The MSPAT was evaluated in an experiment conducted at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), where the maize was subjected to different doses of nitrogen fertiliser (0, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 ***−1 N). Spectral readings were taken at three phenological stages (V5, V10, R2) using the MSPAT, the SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter and the FieldSpec PRO FR3 spectroradiometer. After taking the optical measurements, the nitrogen content of the leaves was determined in the laboratory using the method proposed by Kjeldahl. The data analysis included the calculation of normalised ratio indices (NRIs) for the estimation using linear regression, and the application of multivariate statistical methods (PLSR and PCR) for predicting the leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC). The results showed that the MSPAT index with the best performance used the 900 nm band in a normalised ratio with the 560 nm band (R2 = 0.64) at stage V10. In the validation, the MSPAT presented an R2 of 0.79, demonstrating superior performance to the SPAD-502, which achieved an R2 of 0.70. This confirms the potential of the MSPAT compared to commercial equipment, and made it possible to obtain similar results to the reference spectroradiometer. The PLSR model with data from the FieldSpec 3 provided important validation metrics when using reflectance data with first-derivative transformation (R2 = 0.88, RMSE = 1.94 and MAE = 1.28). Sign language has importance rule to deal with communication process especially with impairments hearing people. Sign language detection also attract lot of researchers to join the challenge of research to detect and recognize the sign language in the field of Computer science. Hence, there is still no any standard approach and method to recognize the meaning in every pose of sign language. This research proposed a mechanism to detect Alphabet American Sign Language by utilizing Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) process. The CNN approach was chosen based on the ability and capability to recognize image. In this research, MNIST dataset is used for traning and testing process. The proposed CNN architecture produced 97% of accuracy that outperform the previous research using the same dataset which made this architecture promising.

The recent proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfake videos has drawn attention to the threat of audio and visual forgeries. Most previous studies on detecting artificial intelligence-generated fake videos only utilize visual modality or audio modality. While some methods exploit audio and visual modalities to detect forged videos, they have not been comprehensively evaluated on multimodal datasets of deepfake videos involving acoustic and visual manipulations, and are mostly based on convolutional neural networks with low detection accuracy. Considering that human cognition instinctively integrates multisensory information including audio and visual cues to perceive and interpret content and the success of transformer in various fields, this study introduces the audio-visual transformer-based ensemble network (AVTENet). This innovative framework tackles the complexities of deepfake technology by integrating both acoustic and visual manipulations to enhance the accuracy of video forgery detection. Specifically, the proposed model integrates several purely transformer-based variants that capture video, audio, and audio-visual salient cues to reach a consensus in prediction. For evaluation, we use the recently released benchmark multimodal audio-video FakeAVCeleb dataset. For a detailed analysis, we evaluate AVTENet, its variants, and several existing methods on multiple test sets of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms all existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on Testset-I and Testset-II of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. We also compare AVTENet against humans in detecting video forgery. The results show that AVTENet significantly outperforms humans. © 2016 IEEE.

Domain data can be shifted in any direction so it will be shared in different distributions to its original domain. This could be a problem since the model was trained with different distributions. It is found that adversarial domain adaptation using domain adversarial neural networks (DANN) can help to solve this problem on some scale. DANN can minimize the discrepancy between source and target data so the model can work well in both domains. The experiment is done by utilizing MNIST dataset that shifted into some conditions. In a condition when the shifting of distribution is too far, DANN is struggling to maintain the knowledge extracted from source data which leads to underperformance in the source and target domain. In contrast, when the shifting is closer, DANN can easily fit the model so it can perform well in both domains. It proves DANN is one of the good approaches to performing domain adaptation in small discrepancies.

Universities can employ information technology as one means of achieving their goals and objectives. Universities can get advantages from information technology, such as effective resource management and information management for decision-making. However, don't forget that the campus must consider what technology is appropriate to assist them achieve their goals, particularly in the current industrial era 4.0 where technology is available with many different choices. The campus requires an enterprise architecture in order to design, manage, and coordinate information technology infrastructure, applications, and processes strategically and thoroughly. The adoption of enterprise information system architecture (EA) is also intended to improve the quality of services provided to internal and external stakeholders. In this case, Enterprise Architecture can help an organization to match its information technology resources with business processes and strategies to achieve their goals. This research was conducted using TOGAF ADM, also known as the Open Group Architecture Framework Architecture Development Method. This method offers best practices for creating enterprise architecture and emphasizes several steps that include creating an architectural vision, information systems, business architecture modeling to help XYZ campus manage all their information technology.
