Random-walk shielding-potential viscosity model for warm dense metals

We develop a model, called the “random-walk shielding-potential viscosity model” (RWSP-VM) that introduces the statistics of random-walk ions and the Debye shielding effect to describe the viscosities of warm dense metals. The viscosities of several metals with low to high atomic numbers (Be, Al, Fe, and U) are calculated using the analytical expression of RWSP-VM. Additionally, we simulate the viscosities of Fe and Be by employing the Langevin molecular dynamics (MD) and classical MD, while the MD data for Al and U are obtained from a previous work. The results of the RWSP-VM are in good agreement with the MD results, which validates the proposed model. Furthermore, we compare the RWSP-VM with the one-component plasma model and Yukawa viscosity model and show that the three models yield results in excellent agreement with each other in the regime where the RWSP-VM is applicable. These results indicate that the RWSP-VM is a universal, accurate, and highly efficient model for calculating the viscosity of metals in the warm dense state. The code of the proposed RWSP-VM is provided, and it is envisaged that it will have broad application prospects in numerous fields.

Symbolic regression searches for analytic expressions that accurately describe studied phenomena. The main promise of this approach is that it may return an interpretable model that can be insightful to users, while maintaining high accuracy. The current standard for benchmarking these algorithms is SRBench, which evaluates methods on hundreds of datasets that are a mix of real-world and simulated processes spanning multiple domains. At present, the ability of SRBench to evaluate interpretability is limited to measuring the size of expressions on real-world data, and the exactness of model forms on synthetic data. In practice, model size is only one of many factors used by subject experts to determine how interpretable a model truly is. Furthermore, SRBench does not characterize algorithm performance on specific, challenging sub-tasks of regression such as feature selection and evasion of local minima. In this work, we propose and evaluate an approach to benchmarking SR algorithms that addresses these limitations of SRBench by 1) incorporating expert evaluations of interpretability on a domain-specific task, and 2) evaluating algorithms over distinct properties of data science tasks. We evaluate 12 modern symbolic regression algorithms on these benchmarks and present an in-depth analysis of the results, discuss current challenges of symbolic regression algorithms and highlight possible improvements for the benchmark itself. Suitably tailored forms of spatiotemporal modulation in electronic circuit networks have been recently employed to overcome fundamental challenges in modern electronic systems, including breaking reciprocity, squeezing the footprint of high-Q resonators, and overcoming the delay-bandwidth limit. Rotating patterns of temporal modulations have been used to synthesize angular momentum, which replaces magnetic bias to break reciprocity in integrated circuits. However, this approach is limited by trade-offs between modulation speed, footprint, and bandwidth of operation. Rotating switching patterns in commutated capacitor networks also enables compact filters and quasielectrostatic wave propagation, overcoming the delay-bandwidth limit. In this paper, we combine these mechanisms in an integrated-circuit ring that synthetically rotates in two dimensions, realizing an effective helicoidal motion that provides ultrabroadband quasielectrostatic nonreciprocal responses fitting within a theoretically infinitesimal size. We also analyze the impact of modulation signal noise on time-modulated nonreciprocal components and unveil the role of a dynamic noise mechanism based on which the noise level increases in the presence of a strong signal passing through the component, along with methods to mitigate this effect. We experimentally verify these principles in a three-port integrated circulator based on a 65-nm CMOS process that operates from dc to 1 GHz with a miniaturization factor of 2 × 106.

Beyond a binary theorizing of prosociality

A stylized experiment, the public goods game, has taught us the peculiar reproducible fact that humans tend to contribute more to shared resources than expected from economically rational assumptions. There have been two competing explanations for this phenomenon: either contributing to the public good is an innate human trait (the prosocial preference hypothesis) or a transitory effect while learning the game (the confused learner hypothesis). We use large-scale experimental data from a novel experimental design to distinguish between these two hypotheses. By monitoring the effects of zealots (persistently cooperating bots) and varying the participants’ awareness of them, we find a considerably more complex scenario than previously reported. People indeed have a prosocial bias, but not to the degree that they always forego taking action to increase their profit. While our findings end the simplistic theorizing of prosociality in the public goods game, an observed positive, cooperative response to zealots has actionable policy implications. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Digital transformation plays a big role in many industries, including construction. One of the obstacles to manage large-scale and complex construction projects is inefficient communication between involving personnel. Most problems are such as misunderstanding contexts, incomplete information, ignorance, missing multimedia files, etc. In Thailand, organizations adopt digital transformation by utilizing a variety of applications and software to complete their projects, such as LINE, G-Suite, Asana, etc. Users have to spend a lot of time to learn each application and software to be able to achieve maximum performance. Construction process quality control assisted application is the new tool developed for uniting all needs and solving communication problems. Requirements are gathered by five interviews with three major organizations, the Thailand department of Highway, Team Built Co., Ltd., and one major construction company. Requirements were analyzed to extract the most useful features that are beneficial to all users. React Native and the Expo framework were used to develop the frontend part of the application. For the backend part, the application used microservice architecture with various cloud services, like Amazon AWS, Expo Server, and Firebase Cloud Messaging. In the end, the application was put through hand-on tests by 13 on-site personnel. The final results showed the average scores of the user interface, hands-on experience, and benefits for the users were 4, 4.16, and 3.92 (out of 5), respectively, in which the total satisfaction score is 4.03(out of 5). © 2021 IEEE.

The spread of Corona Virus Disease 19 (COVID-19) in Indonesia is still relatively high and has not shown a significant decrease. One of the main reasons is due to the lack of supervision on the implementation of health protocols such as wearing masks in daily activities. Recently, state-of-the-art algorithms were introduced to automate face mask detection. To be more specific, the researchers developed various kinds of architectures for the detection of masks based on computer vision methods. This paper aims to evaluate well-known architectures, namely the ResNet50, VGG11, InceptionV3, EfficientNetB4, and YOLO (You Only Look Once) to recommend the best approach in this specific field. By using the MaskedFace-Net dataset, the experimental results showed that the EfficientNetB4 architecture has better accuracy at 95.77% compared to the YOLOv4 architecture of 93.40%, InceptionV3 of 87.30%, YOLOv3 of 86.35%, ResNet50 of 84.41%, VGG11 of 84.38%, and YOLOv2 of 78.75%, respectively. It should be noted that particularly for YOLO, the model was trained using a collection of MaskedFace-Net images that had been pre-processed and labelled for the task. The model was initially able to train faster with pre-trained weights from the COCO dataset thanks to transfer learning, resulting in a robust set of features expected for face mask detection and classification.

Dynamic programming is a fundamental algorithm that can be found in our daily lives easily. One of the dynamic programming algorithm implementations consists of solving the 0/1 knapsack problem. A 0/1 knapsack problem can be seen from industrial production cost. It is prevalent that a production cost has to be as efficient as possible, but the expectation is to get the proceeds of the products higher. Thus, the dynamic programming algorithm can be implemented to solve the diverse knapsack problem, one of which is the 0/1 knapsack problem, which would be the main focus of this paper. The implementation was implemented using C language. This paper was created as an early implementation algorithm using a Dynamic program algorithm applied to an Automatic Identification System (AIS) dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

An active noise control system using giant magnetostrictive actuator has been proposed as a countermeasure for interior noise of the ultra-compact mobilities, which is a new transportation tools. In this paper, as basic research toward the development of the proposed giant magnetostrictive actuator for active noise control, we conduct experiments on the material properties when terbium, dysprosium, and iron powder, which make up the giant magnetostrictive material, are mixed and the heat treatment conditions are changed. In this study, the heat treatment temperature was varied from 800°C to 1100°C in 100°C incrementsbased on the equilibrium state temperature of each material, and the heat treatment time was set in 30-minute increments from 1 hour to 3 hours. As a result, TbFe2 was confirmed after heat treatment at an electric furnace temperature of 1000°C for 3 hours, although its strength was insufficient. © 2024 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

In this paper, we consider contextual stochastic optimization using Nadaraya-Watson kernel regression, which is one of the most common approaches in nonparametric regression. Recent studies have explored the asymptotic convergence behavior of using Nadaraya-Watson kernel regression in contextual stochastic optimization;however, the performance guarantee under finite samples remains an open question. This paper derives a finite-sample generalization bound of the Nadaraya-Watson estimator with a spherical kernel under a generic loss function. Based on the generalization bound, we further establish a suboptimality bound for the solution of the Nadaraya-Watson approximation problem relative to the optimal solution. Finally, we derive the optimal kernel bandwidth and provide a sample complexity analysis of the Nadaraya-Watson approximation problem. © 2024, CC BY.
