Recently, there has been a significant increase in the number of foot diseases, highlighting the importance of non-surgical treatments. Customized insoles, tailored to an individual's foot morphology, have emerged as a promising solution. However, the traditional design process of the customized insole is both slow and expensive due to the high computational complexity of finite element analysis (FEA) required to predict deformations of the foot. This study explores the applicability of a graph neural network (GNN) based on the MeshGraphNet framework to predict the 3-D shape of the foot under load and test the performance of GNN depending on the number of datasets. A total of 186 3-D undeformed foot CAD geometries are obtained from a series of 2-D foot images with deformations predicted through FEA. This FEA data is then used to train the GNN model, which aims to predict foot displacement with high accuracy and computation speed. After optimization of the weights of the GNN, the model remarkably outperformed FEA simulations in speed, being approximately 100 times faster, while maintaining high accuracy, with R2 values above 95% in predicting foot displacement. This breakthrough suggests that GNN models can greatly improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of manufacturing customized insoles, providing a significant advancement in non-surgical treatment options for foot conditions. © 2024, The Authors. Ultrasound kidney image segmentation presents significant challenges due to missing or ambiguous boundaries. In this study, we introduce a coarse-to-refinement approach incorporating four novel aspects. Firstly, we leverage the properties of a principal curve (PC) to automatically fine-tune the curve shape and employ a neural network's learning ability to reduce model error. Secondly, a deep fusion learning network is utilized for the coarse segmentation step, incorporating a parallel architecture to enhance deep-learning performance. Thirdly, addressing the limitation of standard PC-based methods in determining the number of vertices automatically, we propose an automatic searching polygon tracking method using a mean shift clustering-based approach to replace the projection and vertex extension step in standard PC-based methods. Lastly, we develop an explainable mathematical map function for the kidney contour, as denoted by the neural network output (i.e., optimized vertices), which aligns well with the ground truth contour. We conducted various experiments to evaluate our method's performance, demonstrating its effectiveness in ultrasound kidney image segmentation. © 2023 IEEE.

In the present study, water-stable bimetallic M−Cu−BTC−II (M=Mg, Fe, Ni, Co, Zn, Mn, and Zr;II=isopropanol and imidazole) was synthesized via the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method without the use of any hazardous organic solvents, and the material was used as an adsorbent for CO2 and H2S gases under ambient conditions, i.e., 25 °C and 1 atm. While all adsorbents possessed the capability to adsorb both CO2 and H2S gases under ambient conditions, Ni-Cu-BTC-II was the best adsorbent in terms of adsorption capacity, i.e., 5.91 and 5.84 mmol g−1 for CO2 and H2S, respectively, which is higher than that of most of the previously reported materials, and stable for at least 10 cycles for CO2 adsorption. The high adsorption capacity of Ni-Cu-BTC-II is primarily attributed to the high specific surface area (1877 m2 g−1), large pore volume (0.607 cm3 g−1), appropriate sizes of the tetrahedral (5.1 Å) and square channel (9.0 Å) cages among M−Cu−BTC−II. The mechanistic study revealed that the process of absorbing CO2 and H2S gases begins with electrostatic interactions, which play an important role in the absorption of CO2 and H2S. For the H2S adsorption process, in addition to electrostatic interactions, the chemical bonding between M ions (Cu2+ and Ni2+) and S atoms in H2S also significantly contributes to the absorption capacity of H2S. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Optical control of spin in semiconductors has been pioneered using nanostructures of III-V and II-VI semiconductors, but the emergence of two-dimensional van der Waals materials offers an alternative low-dimensional platform for spintronic phenomena. Indium selenide (InSe), a group-III monochalcogenide van der Waals material, has shown promise for optoelectronics due to its high electron mobility, tunable direct band gap, and quantum transport. In addition to these confirmed properties, there are predictions of spin-dependent optical selection rules, suggesting the potential for all-optical excitation and control of spin in a two-dimensional layered material. Despite these predictions, layer-dependent optical spin phenomena in InSe have yet to be explored. Here, we present measurements of layer-dependent optical spin dynamics in few-layer and bulk InSe. Polarized photoluminescence reveals layer-dependent optical orientation of spin, thereby demonstrating the optical selection rules in few-layer InSe. Spin dynamics are also studied in many-layer InSe using time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy. By applying out-of-plane and in-plane static magnetic fields for polarized emission measurements and Kerr measurements, respectively, the g factor for InSe was extracted. Further investigations are done by calculating precession values using a k·p model, which is supported by ab initio density functional theory. Comparison of predicted precession rates with experimental measurements highlights the importance of excitonic effects in InSe for understanding spin dynamics. Optical orientation of spin is an important prerequisite for optospintronic phenomena and devices, and these first demonstrations of layer-dependent optical excitation of spins in InSe lay the foundation for combining layer-dependent spin properties with advantageous electronic properties found in this material.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is a pernicious disease characterized by an immunosuppressive milieu that is unresponsive to current immunotherapies. Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) is a natural anti-inflammatory cytokine;however, its contribution to cancer pathogenesis and immunosuppression remains elusive. In this research, we investigated the role and mechanism of IL-1Ra in malignant progression of PDA. Results: Through analyzing clinical dataset and examining the pathological tumor tissues and serum samples, we have demonstrated that IL-1Ra expression is elevated in human PDA and positively associated with malignant progression of PDA. To study the biological function of IL-1Ra in tumors, we generated a set of mouse pancreatic cancer cell lines with a knockout (KO) of the Il1rn gene, encoding IL-1Ra, and compared the tumor growth rates in immune-competent and immune-deficient mice. We found that the Il1rn KO cells exhibited greater tumor inhibition in immune-competent mice, highlighting the crucial role of a functional immune system in Il1rn KO-mediated anti-tumor response. Consistently, we found an increase in CD8⁺ T cells and a decrease in CD11b⁺Ly6G⁻ immunosuppressive mononuclear population in the tumor microenvironment of Il1rn KO-derived tumors. To monitor the inhibitory effects of IL-1Ra on immune cells, we utilized a luciferase-based reporter CD4⁺ T cell line and splenocytes, which were derived from transgenic mice expressing ovalbumin-specific T cell receptors in CD8⁺ T cells, and mice immunized with ovalbumin. We showed that IL-1Ra suppressed T cell receptor signaling and inhibited antigen-specific interferon-γ (IFN-γ) secretion and cytolytic activity in splenocytes. Conclusions: Our findings illustrate the immunosuppressive properties of the natural anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-1Ra, and provide a rationale for considering IL-1Ra-targeted therapies in the treatment of

Background and aim: Aloysia gratissima is used in popular medicine as an analgesic and sedative. However, studies on its biological activities are still scarce. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect of A. gratissima leaves essential oil (OAG) in mice. Experimental procedure: The OAG was obtained by hydrodistillation and its composition was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The sesquiterpenes pinocamphone, β-pinene, and guaiol were the major constituents of OAG. The effect of OAG (1, 10, and 30 mg/kg, p.o.) was assessed by pre-treating male mice 1h before the formalin assay, carrageenan-induced peritonitis test, or the paw edema induced by arachidonic acid (AA). The acute toxicity of OAG (2000 mg/kg, p.o.) was also investigated. Results and conclusion: The minimum effective dose of OAG in the formalin test was 1 mg/kg. This dose did not affect the locomotor activity of mice. The OAG decreased the number of leukocytes/mm³ in the peritoneal exudate of mice and reduced paw edema 45 min after the arachidonic acid injection. OAG treatment elicited a reduction in NPSH levels in the paw tissue and increased NPSH levels in mice blood plasma and did not cause mice mortality. The OAG is devoid of acute toxicity and shows anti-inflammatory activity, which can be related to the presence of pinocamphone, guaiol, and β-pinene and is mediated, at least in part, by mechanisms that involve the participation of NPSH. © 2024 Center for Food and Biomolecules, National Taiwan University

Interevent times in temporal contact data from humans and animals typically obey heavy-tailed distributions, which impacts contagion and other dynamical processes on networks. We theoretically show that distributions of interevent times heavier-tailed than exponential distributions are a consequence of the most basic metapopulation model used in epidemiology and ecology, in which individuals move from one patch to another according to the simple random walk. Our results hold true irrespective of the network structure and also for more realistic mobility rules such as high-order random walks and the recurrent mobility patterns used for modeling human dynamics.

Nonlinear metasurfaces based on coupling of intersubband transitions in n-doped semiconductor heterostructures with optical modes in nanoresonators provide the largest known second-order nonlinear response in condensed matter systems in the mid-infrared spectral range. However, these giant nonlinearities are only present at relatively low pumping intensities which limits the maximum achievable frequency conversion efficiency. We experimentally investigate a new nonlinear intersubband metasurface design for second harmonic generation based on two-level nonlinear intersubband system that provides high nonlinearity combined with significantly reduced intensity saturation compared to the intersubband metasurfaces based on three-level intersubband systems demonstrated so far. © 2023 SPIE.

An e-Commerce company has been using an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for several years, but is still constrained in its implementation, this is reflected in the number of issue/change request tickets submitted by users who have not been able to reach ideal conditions. To overcome this problem, we need an appropriate reference model, the ERP system user acceptance model in companies. The study conducted factors that influence the level of acceptance of SAP ERP users in the XYZ group to then determine a model that is able to explain practically the level of ERP system user acceptance, which in turn can produce concrete proposals to increase ERP system user acceptance. Research is quantitative descriptive using factor analysis and regression analysis methods. The research method uses a questionnaire with a total of 107 valid respondents coming from 8 company names under the XYZ group in 6 Southeast Asian countries. The conclusion of the study is that there are 24 indicators and 4 factors that influence user acceptance of the SAP ERP system. These four factors are the low contribution of the ERP system, the quality of ERP systems and data, the development of ERP systems, and also the low quality of ERP system supporters. It is hoped that by optimizing the value of the 4 factors, the XYZ group can increase user acceptance of the SAP ERP system so that the system can provide benefits expected by the company to be competitive advantage. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

We report the temperature-dependent band structure and energy dependence of the electron-phonon interaction of the topological surface state (TSS) on the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Te3 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Despite the nonrigid-band-like band modification as the temperature increases, the degeneracy at the Dirac point (DP) was robust, indicating topological protection. The electron-phonon coupling parameter depends on the initial-state electron energy, varying from 0.13 (at the DP) to 0.02 (100 meV above the DP), in agreement with reported first-principles calculations. Our findings provide insight into the physical properties derived from TSSs at finite temperatures.
