This work develops a novel approach to exploit synthesized, approximate circuits for the ansatz of variational quantum algorithms (VQA) and demonstrates its effectiveness for NchooseK, a domain-specific language supporting quantum-based solving of constraint-based problems. Synthesis is generalized to produce parametric circuits of short depth in close approximation of the original circuit offline. This removes syn-thesis from the critical path (online) between repeated quantum circuit executions of VQA while reducing circuit depth, thereby resulting in higher fidelity results than the baseline without synthesis. Simulation experiments indicate improvements of 98% on average. Further, experiments indicate that this approach can obtain viable solutions when the baseline could not. All of this is achieved with an average variation in circuit depth of less than 10%. © 2023 IEEE.

Automated quality assessment using appearance-based simulations and hippocampus segmentation on Low-field paediatric brain MR images

Understanding the structural growth of paediatric brains is a key step in the identification of various neuro-developmental disorders. However, our knowledge is limited by many factors, including the lack of automated image analysis tools, especially in Low and Middle Income Countries from the lack of high field MR images available. Low-field systems are being increasingly explored in these countries, and, therefore, there is a need to develop automated image analysis tools for these images. In this work, as a preliminary step, we consider two tasks: 1) automated quality assurance and 2) hippocampal segmentation, where we compare multiple approaches. For the automated quality assurance task a DenseNet combined with appearance-based transformations for synthesising artefacts produced the best performance, with a weighted accuracy of 82.3%. For the segmentation task, registration of an average atlas performed the best, with a final Dice score of 0.61. Our results show that although the images can provide understanding of large scale pathologies and gross scale anatomical development, there still remain barriers for their use for more granular analyses. © 2024, CC BY.

Agriculture holds a crucial position in maintaining livelihoods and securing food sources, particularly in nations such as Ethiopia, where a substantial portion of the population depends on agricultural pursuits. However, meeting the growing demand for food production amidst population growth presents considerable challenges. Recent advancements in technology, particularly in the areas of Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and the Internet of Things (IoT) offer promising solutions to address these challenges. This paper explores the potential of integrating ML, DL, and IoT technologies in agriculture to revolutionize the sector. By harnessing data-driven insights, farmers can make informed decisions regarding crop management, soil health, and weather patterns, leading to optimized resource allocation and increased productivity. Moreover, IoT devices enable the real-time monitoring and control of agricultural operations, enhancing sustainability and productivity. Despite the opportunities presented by these technologies, there are also challenges to overcome, such as data quality, connectivity issues, and the need for farmer education. However, with concerted efforts and investment, Ethiopia and other agricultural regions can unlock the full potential of ML, DL, and IoT technologies to ensure food security, alleviate poverty, and drive economic development. This review paper offers perspectives on the present status, challenges, and future possibilities regarding the integration of ML, DL, and IoT in agriculture. It underscores the transformative potential of these technologies within the sector.

We have analysed mental health data for in-patient admissions from 1997 to 2021 in Scotland. The number of patient admissions for mental health patients is declining despite population numbers increasing. This is driven by the adult population;child and adolescent numbers are consistent. We find that mental health in-patients are more likely to be from deprived areas: 33 % of patients are from the most deprived areas, compared to only 11 % from the least deprived. The average length of stay for a mental health in-patient is decreasing, with a rise in stays lasting less than a day. The number of mental health patients who have been readmitted within a month fell from 1997 to 2011, then increased to 2021. Despite the average stay length decreasing, the number of overall readmissions is increasing, suggesting patients are having more, shorter stays. © 2023 The authors and IOS Press.

Vehicular network technology has made substantial advancements in recent years in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) has emerged as a novel paradigm with a substantial increase in data exchange within Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). VCC integrates cloud computing, vehicular networking, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. It enables Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), and Vehicle-to-Device (V2D) communication. VCC optimizes vehicle, cloud infrastructure, and IoT resources while addressing significant communication security and vehicle-user privacy challenges. To address these issues, we developed an RFID-based authentication protocol for VCC based on a Henon map using a hash function. In addition, we also incorporated a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) to resist physical tampering attacks. We validate the protocol's security formally and informally. The formal security analysis is conducted through a widely used RoR model. We use the Scyther simulation tool to verify the proposed protocol's security against various attacks. Moreover, we compare the performance of our protocol with similar existing protocols across important performance parameters such as communication and computation overheads and security attributes. The proposed protocol yields substantial improvements, demonstrating a 40.74% reduction in computation overhead and a 13.03% decrease in communication overhead as compared to related protocols, delivering both enhanced performance and resource efficiency. The analysis demonstrates its capacity to support secure communication in the VCC environment and satisfy desirable security attributes. © 2024 IEEE.

In today's age of collaborative machine learning where data sharing happens across organizations and privacy becomes a real issue. Old-school methods of securing systems work, but tend to lack against popular new attacks. The research uses a novel approach that uses quantum computing to reimagine what privacy means. An article which deals with the combination of quantum technologies and federated learning systems, specifically discussing how it may set a new standard for data privacy. The plan is to use quantum key distribution and entanglement-based protocols in order to fortify the defences of collaborative machine learning systems against adversarial attacks or unauthorized access, according a consortium statement. The approach to quantum -enhanced federated learning presented provides a solution not only with secure improvements but also implementing more extreme circumstances in decentralised learning scenarios, such as challenges due to different data available and regulatory demands. This paper provides a theoretical benchmark for quantum federated learning and focuses on the underlying concepts leading to excellent security guarantees. Applications and simulations show that this framework can be used in practice with effectiveness. Furthermore, this work benchmarks the scalability of quantum federated learning for different classical and common machine-learning models. The results are a major step towards the goal of making more sophisticated privacy solutions available and allow to create secure, private-first workspace for collaborative machine learning. By leveraging the latest in quantum computing along with specialized tactics designed to combat rapidly evolving data protection threats, this approach will provide a strong foundation for future applications of shared machine learning within distributed quantum environments. © 2024 IEEE.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that remains challenging to diagnose in its early stages. This study presents a novel 3D multi-scale Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model that utilizes resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data to classify different stages of Alzheimer's disease. The proposed model integrates multi-scale feature extraction from the hippocampal region, optimizing the detection of fine-grained and global patterns indicative of AD progression. The model was evaluated on a balanced dataset of 300 subjects, applying cross-validation to ensure robustness across multiple binary classification tasks. Our experimental results demonstrate a classification accuracy of up to 93% for distinguishing Alzheimer's Disease from Cognitively Normal subjects. High sensitivity, specificity, and precision were observed across all classification tasks, indicating the model's effectiveness in early-stage Alzheimer's detection. These findings suggest the proposed approach could enhance clinical diagnosis and facilitate timely interventions for AD patients. © 2024 IEEE.

An important issue in data mining and information retrieval is the problem of multiple similarity or n-similarity. This problem entails finding a group of n data points with the highest similarity within a large dataset. Exact methods to solve this problem exist but come with high time and space complexities. Additionally, various metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed, including genetic algorithms, gravitational search algorithms, particle swarm optimization, imperialist competitive algorithms, and fuzzy imperialist competitive algorithms. These metaheuristics are capable of finding near-optimal solutions within a reasonable timeframe, although there is no guarantee of achieving exact results. In this paper, we employ a parallelization technique using CUDA to expedite the exact method. We conduct experiments on textual datasets to identify a group of n textual documents with the highest similarity to each other. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed parallel exact method significantly reduces execution time compared to the best sequential approach and CPU multi-core implementation. Furthermore, it is evident that the proposed method requires less memory space than the exact method. © 2024 IEEE.

This study suggests a novel methodology for intelligent energy management in electric vehicles (EVs) through the integration of neural networks and fuzzy logic. Achieving enhanced energy efficiency for electric vehicles is a critical concern that is tackled in this research through the integration of neural networks' decision-making and pattern recognition functionalities with fuzzy logic's adaptability and learning capabilities. The proposed method seeks to optimize energy consumption, enhance overall performance, and extend driving range. The integrated system is subjected to rigorous testing using a meticulously planned experimental setup and simulation environment, which enables it to surpass the performance of more conventional approaches to energy management. The results emphasize the potential of the novel methodology to improve environmentally sustainable transportation options and propel the development of electric vehicle technology. This study not only offers valuable insights into efficient energy management but also establishes the groundwork for subsequent developments in the domain. © 2024 IEEE.
