Cryptographic hash functions play significant roles in information security applications, including data integrity. Facing hash collision attacks, several prevalent cryptographic hash functions have been proved not safe enough. In this paper, we propose a simple scheme for data integrity check called PN-HASH (Positive hash and Negative hash). PN-HASH is inspired by the negative representation of information, which is a research branch in the field of immune computation. This scheme computes two hash values of the input message and its negative representation. The resulting hashes are called the positive hash and the negative hash, respectively. The proposed scheme is simple but can improve the resistance to hash collision attacks. Furthermore, for more flexibility and higher security, we propose three extensions of PN-HASH. Security and complexity analyses show that PN-HASH could improve the security of underlying cryptographic hash functions, with approximately twice cost of them. To give exact examples, we present PN-MD5, an implementation of PN-HASH based on MD5.

In this work, we study a link-weighted and distance-constrained channel assignment problem in multi-channel mesh networks with stationary router nodes, such as community wireless networks. A good channel assignment is given as the one which can minimize interference of each link from its neighboring links and subsequently improve the network throughput. In response to it, we introduce an interference metric, namely, min-max i-value of an edge (MMIE), to explicitly accounts for interference among links that are at distance one. In addition, we further show that the link-weighted and distance-constrained channel assignment problem with respect to the interference metric is NP-hard in computation. This guides us to propose a new heuristic channel assignment algorithm called LD-CA algorithm. We study the performance of our algorithm by implementing it in a wireless simulation environment consisting of 25 nodes, each equipped with one 802.11 wireless card. The ns-2 simulation results show that in a multi-channel environment, the LD-CA algorithm significantly outperforms previously proposed channel assignment schemes by minimizing MMIE of all links.

In the wireless network of finite spectrum resource, some communication users probably do not allocate the spectrum so that their communication should be delayed. Thus it is necessary to arrange the communication time of the systems when we allocate the communication frequency. We construct a frequency-time spectrum model and propose a joint pre-allocation in a two-dimension space. Through the distributed games learning algorithm, each system could obtain its communication schedule, which makes the bandwidth utilization achieve a quite high level and arranges the global communication time as short as possible. The experiments show that our results have obvious superiorities in both bandwidth utilization and temporal performance relative to other allocation algorithms.

The main goal in proteomics is to describe the proteome in a comprehensive and accurate way, and enzymolysis is a key step in the process of large-scale proteomics experiments. For the same protein samples, using different proteases may introduce a strong bias into protein analysis results. This situation will make proteomics experiments irreproducible and will have a serious impact on the experimental results. To reduce this protease bias, we present EMQ (Error-Minimization-based Quantification for Protein), an approach based on error minimization. In contrast to the existing method, our model includes information on shared peptides, which are ubiquitous in mass spectrometric datasets. The abundance of shared peptides will be assigned to related proteins accurately, thereby determining the protein abundance. Based on this feature, we used the proposed model with several datasets, and compared its performance with the other. Finally, our model is shown to have better performance than other approach (average Pearson correlation of ~0.83 obtained by EMQ, while ~0.63 by other model). © VDE VERLAG GMBH - Berlin - Offenbach.

This paper proposes an energy-efficient and collision-free medium access control protocol TDMA-WSN for wireless sensor networks. The protocol is based on time division multiple access (TDMA) principle and reduces energy consumption by avoiding overhearing, collision and idle listening. Nodes in TDMA-WSN build schedules based on information about their neighborhood to determine when they can transmit to their neighbors and when they should listen to the channel or sleep. TDMA-WSN proposes a novel resolution with three-d-hop neighborhood information to avoid collision caused by the two-hop collision-free principle used in some protocols. TDMA-WSN can accelerate passing message by arranging schedule based on routing information from the upper-layer. The simulation results indicate that TDMA-WSN outperforms contention-based protocols (e.g., S-MAC) and scheduling-based protocols (e.g., NAMA) with significant energy savings.

Tumor type classification and candidate cancer-specific biomarkers discovery via semi-supervised learning

Identifying cancer-related differentially expressed genes provides significant information for diagnosing tumors, predicting prognoses, and effective treatments. Recently, deep learning methods have been used to perform gene differential expression analysis using microarray-based high-throughput gene profiling and have achieved good results. In this study, we proposed a new robust multiple-datasetsbased semi-supervised learning model, MSSL, to perform tumor type classification and candidate cancer-specific biomarkers discovery across multiple tumor types and multiple datasets, which addressed the following long-lasting obstacles:(1) the data volume of the existing single dataset is not enough to fully exert the advantages of deep learning;(2) a large number of datasets from different research institutions cannot be effectively used due to inconsistent internal variances and low quality;(3) relatively uncommon cancers have limited effects on deep learning methods. In our article, we applied MSSL to The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA) and the Gene Expression Comprehensive Database(GEO) pan-cancer normalized-level3 RNA-seq data and got 97.6% final classification accuracy, which had a significant performance leap compared with previous approaches. Finally, we got the ranking of the importance of the corresponding genes for each cancer type based on classification results and validated that the top genes selected in this way were biologically meaningful for corresponding tumors and some of them had been used as biomarkers, which showed the efficacy of our method.

In traditional multiple instance learning (MIL), both positive and negative bags are required to learn a prediction function. However, a high human cost is needed to know the label of each bag - positive or negative. Only positive bags contain our focus (positive instances) while negative bags consist of noise or background (negative instances). So we do not expect to spend too much to label the negative bags. Contrary to our expectation, nearly all existing MIL methods require enough negative bags besides positive ones. In this paper we propose an algorithm called 'Positive Multiple Instance' (PMI), which learns a classifier given only a set of positive bags. So the annotation of negative bags becomes unnecessary in our method. PMI is constructed based on the assumption that the unknown positive instances in positive bags be similar each other and constitute one compact cluster in feature space and the negative instances locate outside this cluster. The experimental results demonstrate that PMI achieves the performances close to or a little worse than those of the traditional MIL algorithms on benchmark and real data sets. However, the number of training bags in PMI is reduced significantly compared with traditional MIL algorithms. © 2016 IEEE.

A fundamental issue in wireless sensor network is to extend network lifetime while maintaining network coverage and connectivity. Protection for sensors themselves is another important concern. An Energyaware Coverage based Node Scheduling scheme (ECNS) is proposed to provide protection for sensors and guarantees network connectivity and desired coverage level. ECNS enables each node to decide whether it is eligible to turn off to conserve energy through local information exchange with its neighbors. Simulation results show that ECNS improves network performance with respect to energy conservation, load balance and network lifetime.

Differential Evolution is one kind of Evolutionary Algorithms, which has been successfully applied to solve many optimization problems. In this paper, a directed differential mutation (DDM), which utilizes the directional derivative to decide a suitable search direction and a proper mutation step size, is proposed. It is merged into the classical DE to form a new algorithm, named directed differential evolution (DDE). The performance of the DDE is tested on 23 classical problems for numerical optimization. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the DDE outperforms the classical DE on most functions.
