A Unified Software and Hardware Distributed Approach for the CAM/CIM Environment with the Occam/Transputer Model

The active involvement of the computer in the manufacturing process and the control of production is the basis for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). Technological development has opened the way to more flexible shoofloor automation. The key for the successful introduction of the computer integrated manufacturing concepts (CIM) is the ability to react fast and flexible to all new demands from the market side. In this paper we discuss a method based on the OCCAM/Transputer parallel approach to deal with at least a part of the complex demands on the structure and operation of the manufacturing environment. We use the concept of decomposing a complex system into a number of sub-systems which react with each other. The whole system is decomposed twice: horizontally into a number of functionally equivalent subparts and vertically into various levels of abstraction, all within the unified OCCAM model. The result is a hierarchical net structure which consists of local intelligent islands at various logical levels, which autonomously work in parallel and interact with the components of the adjacent logical levels. Omega - A RISC Architecture for Real-Time applications

Although the recently developed reduced instruction set computer (RISC) architecture has proven to offer impressive performance in general applications, it has its drawbacks in the field of multitasking real-time environments. The difficulties are mainly related to the large number of processor registers which must be saved and restored on every context switch. On the other hand, since this large number of registers accounts for most of the performance benefits, a concept had to be developed which preserves the advantages of the RISC architecture and provides for the necessary real-time capabilities. This paper describes a solution in which additional hardware performs a part of the save/restore task associated with every context switch. This approach yields a RISC architecture suited for the requirements of a modern process control system. Subject area. 4.1 Digital computer control Systems

A Multi-Microcomputer-Based Robot control System

When designing a multi-computer system it is necessary to keep in mind that the system should be expandable from a single computer up to full scale just by having to plug in additional components or boards and not by having to change the layout of the system or the basis of the application. Usually this is known as modularity. If the computer is dedicated to a special field of application, an additional design aspect is of great importance. This is the portability of the software, which means that the software should run without major modifications under almost all circumstances. This paper deals with the design and layout of a multi-computer system which is dedicated to robot control. It uses microprocessors as central units and is based on the design aspects mentioned above.

A Distributed computer System on the Basis of the Pool-processor Concept

During the last 6-7 years microcomputers have been accepted in industry. Parallel to this fact, there was and is an increasing demand in distributed systems, to cope with the necessities of the running process and the reliability considerations, because the distribution of computer performance over the process is not only a question of demand of performance. For systems in use mainly on the basis of a serial data transfer the distribution is doing nothing else but providing a smaller part of a process with a processing element. This paper deals with a computer system, capable of increasing the performance by using a pool of processors to give the user the possibility to implement as many as necessary. By this, he is no longer forced to provide his system with more performance than the minimum.
