Abnormalities in motor-control behavior, which have been associated with concussion and head acceleration events (HAE), can be quantified using virtual reality (VR) technologies. Motor-control behavior has been consistently mapped to the brain’s somatomotor network (SM) using both structural (sMRI) and functional MRI (fMRI). However, no studies have integrated HAE, motor-control behavior, sMRI and fMRI measures. Here, brain networks important for motor-control were hypothesized to show changes in tractography-based diffusion weighted imaging [difference in fractional anisotropy (∆FA)] and resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) measures in collegiate American football players across the season, and that these measures would relate to VR-based motor-control. We further tested if nine inflammation-related miRNAs were associated with behavior-structure-function variables. Using permutation-based mediation/moderation methods, we found that across-season ∆FA from the SM structural connectome (SM-∆FA) mediated the relationship between across-season VR-based Sensory-motor Reactivity (∆SR) and rs-fMRI SM fingerprint similarity (psobelperm = 0.007 and Teff = 47%). The interaction between ∆SR and SM-∆FA also predicted (pFPerm= 0.036, PB₃perm = 0.058) across-season levels of ∆miRNA-30d through permutation-based moderation analysis. These results suggest (1) that motor-control is in a feedback relationship with brain structure and function, (2) behavior-structure-function can be connected to HAE, and (3) behavior-structure might predict molecular biology measures. © 2022, CC BY.

The unpredictability of random numbers is fundamental to both digital security [1, 2] and applications that fairly distribute resources [3, 4]. However, existing random number generators have limitations—the generation processes cannot be fully traced, audited, and certified to be unpredictable. The algorithmic steps used in pseudorandom number generators [5] are auditable, but they cannot guarantee that their outputs were a priori unpredictable given knowledge of the initial seed. Device-independent quantum random number generators [6–9] can ensure that the source of randomness was unknown beforehand, but the steps used to extract the randomness are vulnerable to tampering. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a fully traceable random number generation protocol based on device-independent techniques. Our protocol extracts randomness from unpredictable non-local quantum correlations, and uses distributed intertwined hash chains to cryptographically trace and verify the extraction process. This protocol is at the heart of a public traceable and certifiable quantum randomness beacon that we have launched [10]. Over the first 40 days of operation, we completed the protocol 7434 out of 7454 attempts—a success rate of 99.7%. Each time the protocol succeeded, the beacon emitted a pulse of 512 bits of traceable randomness. The bits are certified to be uniform with error times actual success probability bounded by 2−64. The generation of certifiable and traceable randomness represents one of the first public services that operates with an entanglement-derived advantage over comparable classical approaches. Deep learning (DL) has shown great potential for enhancing channel state information (CSI) feedback in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, a subject currently under study by the 3GPP standards body. Digital twins (DTs) have emerged as an effective means to generate site-specific datasets for training DL-based CSI feedback models. However, most existing studies rely solely on simulations, leaving the effectiveness of DTs in reducing DL training costs yet to be validated through realistic experimental setups. This paper addresses this gap by establishing a real-world (RW) environment and corresponding virtual channels using ray tracing with replicated 3D models and accurate antenna properties. We evaluate whether models trained in DT environments can effectively operate in RW scenarios and quantify the benefits of online learning (OL) for performance enhancement. Results show that a dedicated DT remains essential even with OL to achieve satisfactory performance in RW scenarios. © 2012 IEEE.

MENAHIA (Middle East and North African Health Informatics Association) is the International Medical Informatics Association chapter dedicated to the Middle East and North Africa region. This region is rapidly growing in terms of the use of health informatics or what has been recently coined digital health. Human health is highly affected by the health of the environment, animal health, food, nutrition, climate change, and many other factors that are beyond the biological or genetic structure of human beings. The impact of animal health and the health of the environment on people's health is an old phenomenon but recent reemerging and appearance of diseases have clearly demonstrated the link between these. The Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that almost all of us have been suffering from is an example of this. A number of countries in the region have already shown the depth and the work that they do to integrate the concept of 'One Health' in the public health surveillance system as they have described the work that has been done to capture data from databases other than those dealing with human beings. The examples that were provided to monitor the health of animals, agriculture, environmental health, climate change, and man-made and natural disasters are just examples of what countries have been registering in their databases and informing the health authorities of these changes and emerging trends. © The Author(s) 2023.

One Health seeks to integrate and balance the health of humans, animals, and environmental systems, which are intricately linked through microbiomes. These microbial communities exchange microbes and genes, influencing not only human and animal health but also key environmental, agricultural, and biotechnological processes. Preventing the emergence of pathogens as well as monitoring and controlling the composition of microbiomes through microbial effectors including virulence factors, toxins, antibiotics, non-ribosomal peptides, and viruses holds transformative potential. However, the mechanisms by which these microbial effectors shape microbiomes and their broader functional consequences for host and ecosystem health remain poorly understood. Metaproteomics offers a novel methodological framework as it provides insights into microbial dynamics by quantifying microbial biomass composition, metabolic functions, and detecting effectors like viruses, antimicrobial resistance proteins, and non-ribosomal peptides. Here, we highlight the potential of metaproteomics in elucidating microbial effectors and their impact on microbiomes and discuss their potential for modulating microbiomes to foster desired functions.

We derive nonlinear wave equations describing the propagation of slowly varying wave packets formed by topological valley-Hall edge states. We show that edge pulses break up even in the absence of spatial dispersion due to nonlinear self-steepening. Self-steepening leads to the previously unattended effect of a gradient catastrophe, which develops in a finite time determined by the ratio between the pulse's nonlinear frequency shift and the size of the topological band gap. Taking the weak spatial dispersion into account results in the formation of stable edge quasisolitons. Our findings are generic to systems governed by Dirac-like Hamiltonians and validated by numerical modeling of pulse propagation along a valley-Hall domain wall in staggered honeycomb waveguide lattices with Kerr nonlinearity.

With the evolution of the 5G, 6G and beyond, device-to-device (D2D) communication has been developed as an energy-, and spectrum-efficient solution. In cellular network, D2D links need to share the same spectrum resources with the cellular link. A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can reconfigure the phase shifts of elements and create favorable beam steering, which can mitigate aggravated interference caused by D2D links. In this paper, we study a RIS-assisted single cell uplink communication network scenario, where the cellular link and multiple D2D links utilize direct propagation and reflecting one-hop propagation. The problem of maximizing the total system rate is formulated by jointly optimizing transmission powers of all links and discrete phase shifts of all elements. The formulated problem is an NP-hard mixed integer non-convex non-linear problem. To obtain practical solutions, we capitalize on alternating maximization and the problem is decomposed into two sub-problems. For the power allocation, the problem is a difference of concave functions (DC) problem, which is solved with the gradient descent method. For the phase shift, a local search algorithm with lower complexity is utilized. Simulation results show that deploying RIS and optimizing the phase shifts have a significant effect on mitigating D2D network interference. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The technology of next generation sequencing brought about evolution in research that based on sequence which replaces the microarray due to its advantages. The RNA-Seq is a high-throughput gene expression data that uses NGS technologies. The problem of high-throughput RNA-Seq datasets is the high of dimensionally (variables > observations) that need to reduce their dimensions to predict and classify. In this work, ensemble-based on the approach of selection the feature is proposed to choose small optimal genes from various RNA-Seq cancer datasets. The approach combines two filters to select the features (SNR and t-test). In addition, SVM-RFE is used as an embedded feature selection. The SVM classifier used for validating and testing the selected genes using the accuracy measure. The results show the ability to select small optimal genes with high accuracy. Consequently, the genes which are selected will be used as biomarkers to diagnose cancer. © 2019 IEEE.

The European eSafety initiative aims to improve the safety and efficiency of road transport. The main element of eSafety is the pan-European eCall project—an in-vehicle system which idea is to inform about road collisions or serious accidents. As estimated by the European Commission, the implemented system will reduce services’ response time by 40%. This will save 2,500 people a year. In 2015, the European Parliament adopted the legislation that from the end of March 2018 all new cars from the EU should be equipped with the eCall system. The limitation of this idea is that only small part of cars driven in UE are brand new (about 3.7% brand new cars were sold in 2015). This paper presents the first concept of an onboard eCall device which can be installed at the owners’ request in used vehicles. The proposed system will be able to detect a road accident, indicate the number of vehicle’s occupants, report their vital functions, and send that information to dedicated emergency services via duplex communication channel. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.
