LMI stability analysis for a micro RNA - Messenger RNA interaction mathematical model

The micro RNA-messenger RNA dynamics is a topic of constant interest. In this paper we analyze the stability of equilibria of a mathematical model associated to this interaction. After proving the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium point in the positive ortant, we provide numerically tractable conditions (by using Linear Matrix Inequalities techniques) to check the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point. An illustrative numerical example is closing the paper along with some conclusions. © 2019, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

Rehabilitation exercises are a very useful method of physical therapy. Rehabilitation exercise assistant systems are of three types. The first type provides a platform to perform designed rehabilitation exercises, the second type of system encourages and guides the performer in executing rehabilitation exercises, and the third type of system evaluates the performance of rehabilitation exercise schemes. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating the performance of rehabilitation exercise schemes. However, most of these methods do not consider the effect of compensatory movements. Compensatory movement occurs when a performer performs a rehabilitation exercise with nontarget musculature. This work proposes a system that can evaluate rehabilitation exercise performance by detecting the compensatory movements effectively. The core classification algorithm of the proposed system is designed based on CNN deep learning algorithms. The architecture of the proposed algorithm is concise, and thermal imaging is employed to reduce the interference. Therefore, the proposed system can detect the compensatory movements effectively on time, so that real-time rehabilitation exercise performance evaluation is achieved.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Computational models of acoustic wave propagation are frequently used in transcranial ultrasound therapy, for example, to calculate the intracranial pressure field or to calculate phase delays to correct for skull distortions. To allow intercomparison between the different modeling tools and techniques used by the community, an international working group was convened to formulate a set of numerical benchmarks. Here, these benchmarks are presented, along with intercomparison results. Nine different benchmarks of increasing geometric complexity are defined. These include a single-layer planar bone immersed in water, a multi-layer bone, and a whole skull. Two transducer configurations are considered (a focused bowl and a plane piston), giving a total of 18 permutations of the benchmarks. Eleven different modeling tools are used to compute the benchmark results. The models span a wide range of numerical techniques, including the finite-difference time-domain method, angular-spectrum method, pseudospectral method, boundary-element method, and spectral-element method. Good agreement is found between the models, particularly for the position, size, and magnitude of the acoustic focus within the skull. When comparing results for each model with every other model in a cross comparison, the median values for each benchmark for the difference in focal pressure and position are less than 10% and 1 mm, respectively. The photonic spin Hall effect is a manifestation of the spin-orbit interaction of light and can be measured by a transverse shift δ of photons with opposite spins. The precise measurement of transverse shifts can enable many spin-related applications, such as precise metrology and optical sensing. However, this transverse shift is generally small (i.e., δ/λ<10−1, where λ is the wavelength), which impedes its precise measurement. To date, proposals to generate a giant spin Hall effect (namely, with δ/λ>102) have severe limitations, particularly its occurrence only over a narrow angular cone (with a width of Δθ<1∘). Here we propose a universal scheme to realize the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect with Δθ>70∘ by exploiting the interface between free space and uniaxial epsilon-near-zero media. The underlying mechanism is ascribed to the almost-perfect polarization splitting between s and p polarized waves at the designed interface. Remarkably, this almost-perfect polarization splitting does not resort to the interference effect and is insensitive to the incident angle, which then gives rise to the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect.

A framework for synchronizing a team of aerial robots in communication-limited environments

This paper addresses a synchronization problem that arises when a team of aerial robots (ARs) need to communicate while performing assigned tasks in a cooperative scenario. Each robot has a limited communication range and flies within a previously assigned closed trajectory. When two robots are close enough, a communication link may be established, allowing the robots to exchange information. The goal is to schedule the flights such that the entire system can be synchronized for maximum information exchange, that is, every pair of neighbors always visit the feasible communication link at the same time. We propose an algorithm for scheduling a team of robots in this scenario and propose a robust framework in which the synchronization of a large team of robots is assured. The approach allows us to design a fault-tolerant system that can be used for multiple tasks such as surveillance, area exploration, searching for targets in a hazardous environment, and assembly and structure construction, to name a few. In this paper, we discuss an application of the method of laser-speckle correlation for studying the blood coagulation process. A module for recording and processing speckle images based on a debugging kit for the Atxmega128A1 microcontroller has been developed. The results of testing the developed module as part of a laboratory setup based on a semiconductor laser using standard reagents are presented.

Optimization underpins many of the challenges that science and technology face on a daily basis. Recent years have witnessed a major shift from traditional optimization paradigms grounded on batch algorithms for medium-scale problems to challenging dynamic, time-varying, and even huge-size settings. This is driven by technological transformations that converted infrastructural and social platforms into complex and dynamic networked systems with even pervasive sensing and computing capabilities. The present paper reviews a broad class of state-of-the-art algorithms for time-varying optimization, with an eye to both algorithmic development and performance analysis. It offers a comprehensive overview of available tools and methods, and unveils open challenges in application domains of broad interest. The real-world examples presented include smart power systems, robotics, machine learning, and data analytics, highlighting domain-specific issues and solutions. —The mathematical model for many problems is arising in different industries of natural science, basically formulated using differential, integral and integro-differential equations. The investigation of these equations is conducted with the help of numerical integration theory. It is commonly known that a class of problems can be solved by applying numerical integration. The construction of the quadrature formula has a direct relation with the computation of definite integrals. The theory of definite integrals is used in geometry, physics, mechanics and in other related subjects of science. In this work, the existence and uniqueness of the solution of above-mentioned equations are investigated. By this way, the domain has been defined in which the solution of these problems is equivalent. All proposed four problems can be solved using one and the same methods.
