Systems are often controlled using feedback loops. Fault diagnosis schemes are usually designed assuming that there is no feedback loop. Therefore fault diagnosis methods need to accommodate for the feedback loop. One such method is active fault diagnosis based on a fault signature system. This method is derived using the YJBK parametrisation, named after Youla, Jabr, Bongiorno and Kucera. It uses the derived fault signature system to determine the detectability of possible faults in the system. Deriving the fault signature system requires knowledge about the controller. This paper demonstrates the possibility of estimating the detectability of faults in the fault signature system using a gap-metric. The gap-metric has the advantage of only requiring knowledge about the plant. By using the gap-metric it is possible to estimate the detectability of faults without using information about the controller. © 2018 IEEE.

Global phenological field observations play a crucial role in validating remote sensing products and algorithms. However, due to the spatial mismatch and scale effect between the field observations and the pixels of remote sensing phenology products, a direct comparison often leads to scale errors and increased uncertainty. Therefore, evaluating the spatial representativeness of field observations for remote sensing product validation is essential. This study developed a novel “bottom-up” evaluation framework named MSPT ( M ain land cover type, S patial heterogeneity, P oint-area consistency and T emporal consistency), which comprehensively assesses the spatial representativeness of forest phenological field observations within the coarse spatial scale. Based on MSPT method, the capability of global forest phenological field observations to support coarse-scale remote sensing validation was evaluated. Compared with the general method, MSPT significantly improved validation performance. For the start of the growing season (SOS), the root mean square error (RMSE) decreased from 49.70 to 33.75 days, and the percent bias (PBIAS) changed from −0.14 to 0.03. For the end of the growing season (EOS), the RMSE was reduced from 83.42 to 42.53 days, and the PBIAS decreased from 0.15 to 0.08. These findings demonstrate that MSPT enhances the reliability of validation datasets and effectively reducing uncertainty in the evaluation of coarse AVHRR-derived forest phenology products. The framework offers new insights into resolving the scale mismatch between field observations and the pixels of remote sensing products.

Machine learning (ML) is revolutionizing research and industry. Many ML applications rely on the use of large amounts of personal data for training and inference. Among the most intimate exploited data sources is electroencephalogram (EEG) data, a kind of data that is so rich with information that application developers can easily gain knowledge beyond the professed scope from unprotected EEG signals, including passwords, ATM PINs, and other intimate data. The challenge we address is how to engage in meaningful ML with EEG data while protecting the privacy of users. Hence, we propose cryptographic protocols based on Secure Multiparty Computation (SMC) to perform linear regression over EEG signals from many users in a fully privacy-preserving (PP) fashion, i.e. such that each individual's EEG signals are not revealed to anyone else. To illustrate the potential of our secure framework, we show how it allows estimating the drowsiness of drivers from their EEG signals as would be possible in the unencrypted case, and at a very reasonable computational cost. Our solution is the first application of commodity-based SMC to EEG data, as well as the largest documented experiment of secret sharing based SMC in general, namely with 15 players involved in all the computations. The purpose of the experimental study presented in the paper is to generate new knowledge about the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles to survey buildings and structures for subsequent extraction of information about their condition in hard-to-reach or remote places. As objects for the pilot experiment, the following were selected: a residential building in an urban environment that has been destroyed during operation; an object of unfinished construction; a roadway on the carriageway. An unmanned aerial vehicle of the model: DJI Mavic Air was used to survey the objects. The results of the study of objects are recorded in the form of photo and video streams for each object. Comparison of the results of the inspection of objects by experts and unmanned aerial vehicles showed the possibility and necessity of using new means to collect information about the condition of buildings and structures. The primary processing of the obtained images revealed their features: the effect of illumination on the color characteristics of the object of study; the presence of a textural component that complicates the process of separating the defect from the background; the presence of objects in the image that are not related to the elements of surface destruction; the change in the initial size of the object over time. The detected features of the images allow the use of standard algorithms and processing and require the synthesis of unique trajectories of their application.

The main goal of the paper is to study the equilibria of a nonlinear system, proving the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium point in the positive ortant. We also provide numerically tractable conditions (by using Linear Matrix Inequalities techniques) to check the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point. A numerical study on the flow over a square cylinder in the vicinity of a wall is conducted for different Couette-Poiseuille-based non-uniform flow with the non-dimensional pressure gradient P varying from 0 to 5. The nondimensional gap ratio L (=H /a ) is changed from 0.1 to 2, where H is gap height between the cylinder and wall, and a is the cylinder width. The governing equations are solved numerically through finite volume method based on SIMPLE algorithm on a staggered grid system. Both P and L have a substantial influence on the flow structure, time-mean drag coefficient CD, fluctuating (rms) lift coefficient (C′L), and Strouhal number St. The changes in P and L leads to four distinct flow regimes (I, II, III and IV). Following the flow structure change, the CD , C′L, and St all vary greatly with the change in L and/or P. The CD and C′L both grow with increasing P and/or L. The St increases with P for a given L, being less sensitive to L for a smaller P ( 2). A strong relationship is observed between the flow regimes and the values of CD , CL and St. An increase in P affects the pressure distribution more on the top surface than on bottom surface while an increase in L does the opposite. © 2018 Techno-Press, Ltd.

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. A discrete-time stochastic LQ problem with multiplicative noises and state transmission delay is studied in this paper,which does not require any definiteness constraint on the cost weighting matrices. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the case with a fixed time-state initial pair. A set of coupled discrete-time Riccati-like equations can be derived to characterize the existence and the form of the delayed optimal control. Furthermore, the convexity of the cost functional is fully characterized via certain properties of the solution of the Riccati-like equations.
