To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

In this paper we provide an overview of current research trends, challenges and issues in the domain of smart energy efficient buildings. Based on current research and literature we discuss topics like technology integration, semantic interoperability, automation, and the importance of considering user needs. Furthermore, we introduce a living lab approach, which allows us to conduct research on these topics in a real smart building environment. This living lab is a system for enabling smart energy efficient building applications based on a middleware approach. We describe the software design and the real-world deployment of this system in ten rooms of a university and eight rooms of an office building.

Some of the main characteristics of Cloud Computing are reliability, scalability and ubiquity. This makes it especially suitable to support large groups on learning activities that require computer support in various settings, in and outside the classroom. In this work, we first analyze the use of Google Maps for supporting a learning activity in an urban environment, concluding that some important features are missing. We then propose an approach for taking advantage of cloud computing services for learning activities by integrating different services in a new application. A general architecture explaining this approach and a design for such an application as example are finally presented.

A novel derivative-free algorithm for solving quasilinear systems is presented. It resembles "classical" optimization approach but greatly simplifies computation, resulting in fast execution and numerical stability. Though the global convergence cannot be guaranteed, it turns out that the presented algorithm finds a solution as successfully as other commonly accepted methods. The algorithm is clearly developed and mathematically founded, and its properties are examined by comparisons with other methods.

This paper provides a strategy for supervising the motion of some mobile robots that evolve in the same environment. Some regions of the environment are assumed to have a limited capacity in terms of the number of robots that can simultaneously occupy them, and a set of possible trajectories is available for each robot. The solution comprises the construction of a specific Petri net model for the available trajectories, and the use of resource-allocation techniques based on restricted-capacity regions and on deadlock-free execution.

We report planar integration of tapered Terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) with spoof surface plasmon (SSP) structures. The SSP structure consists of one plasmonic coupler and periodically arranged scatters. The resulting surface-emitting THz beam is highly collimated with a beam divergence as narrow as 3.6°×9.7°. As the beam divergence is inverse proportional to the light emission area, this low divergence indicates a good waveguiding property of the SSP structure, while the low optical background of the beam implies a high coupling efficiency of the THz wave from the laser cavity to the SSPs. Since all the structures are in-plane, this scheme provides a promising platform where the well-established SP techniques can be employed to engineer the THz QCL beam with high flexibilities.
