This paper presents some implementation details of a three-phase to three-phase matrix converter prototype. The bidirectional semiconductor switches were built using discrete IGBTs and fast diodes. Design aspects such as protection against overvoltage and short-circuit, commutation process of bi-directional switches, and input filter are addressed in this paper.

controlling an aircraft during a flight is a compelling condition, which requires a strict and well coded interaction between the crew. The interaction level between the Captain and the First Officer changes during the flight, ranging from a maximum (during takeoff and landing, as well as in case of a failure of the instrumentation or other emergency situations) to a minimum during quiet mid-flight. In this study, our aim is to investigate the neural correlates of different kinds and levels of interaction between couples of professional crew members by means of the innovative technique called brain hyperscanning, i.e. the simultaneous recording of the hemodynamic or neuroelectrical activity of different human subjects involved in interaction tasks. This approach allows the observation and modeling of the neural signature specifically dependent on the interaction between subjects, and, even more interestingly, of the functional links existing between the brain activities of the subjects interacting together. In this EEG hyperscanning study, different phases of a flight were reproduced in a professional flight simulator, which allowed, on one side, to reproduce the ecological setting of a real flight, and, on the other, to keep under control the different levels of interaction induced in the crew by means of systematic and simulated failures of the aircraft instrumentation. Results of the procedure of linear inverse estimation, together with functional hyperconnectivity estimated by means of Partial Directed Coherence, showed a dense network of connections between the activity in the two brains in the takeoff and landing phases, when the cooperation between the crew is maximal, while conversely no significant links were shown during the phases in which the activity of the two pilots was independent.

This paper presents the investigation on the performance of active suspension system in the electric vehicle (EV) conversion, controlled by the stability augmentation system algorithm [9] and a newly proposed SAS-Skyhook algorithm. The evaluations were done using a validated 7-degrees-freedom (7DOF) of vehicle's ride model. The mathematical modelling of the vehicle model is described. A worst case scenario of random road profiles was considered to evaluate the performance of the active suspension system. The method of subjecting the random road profiles input is also described. It was found that in general, the active suspension improved the EV conversion's ride comfort performance significantly, compared to the passive suspension system. In terms of the comparison between the active suspension system controlled by the SAS and SAS-Skyhook algorithms, the ride comfort performance provided by the SAS-Skyhook algorithm is the most significant.

Actuators based on magnetorheological fluids represent an innovative technology to optimize brakes and clutches. Compared to conventional electromechanical systems, MRF actuators show improved and advanced characteristics featuring a smooth adjustable torque, a fast response time, a noiseless operation and a reduced design space. In the present paper, the authors propose an actuator design for a MRF based clutch combined with an integrated electric drive. The actuator design is a further development with enhanced performances considering the torque capacity. Both functionalities of this actuator can be controlled widely independent due to a suitable adjustment of the magnetic field. Therefore a model and a new control strategy are developed. The capability of this concept is proven by measurements of a new proof-of-concept prototype that provides an appropriated ratio between coupling and motor torque of 5:1. This highly integrated mechatronical actuator system allows the design of innovative applications whereby novel features are feasible.

An algorithmic framework is developed for automatic deployment of car-like robots based on Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formulae over a set of regions of interest in the environment. The environment and the regions of interest are a priori known, and the robot has non-negligible size and restricted steering capabilities. The approach relies on constructing a probabilistic finite-state abstraction of the car-like robot and on finding a trajectory (run) in this abstraction such that the probability of satisfying the LTL formula is maximized. The feasibility of our approach is supported by simulations under Matlab environment. © 2011 Faculty of Auto control.

Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) represents a major public health concern. In this paper, we present a dynamical systems model that describes how a behavioral intervention can influence weight gain during pregnancy. The model relies on the integration of a mechanistic energy balance with a dynamical behavioral model. The behavioral model incorporates some well-accepted concepts from psychology: the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the principle of self-regulation which describes how internal processes within the individual can serve to reinforce the positive outcomes of an intervention. A hypothetical case study is presented to illustrate the basic workings of the model and demonstrate how the proper design of the intervention can counteract natural trends towards declines in healthy eating and reduced physical activity during the course of pregnancy. The model can be used by behavioral scientists to evaluate decision rules for adaptive time-varying behavioral interventions, or as the open-loop model for hybrid model predictive control algorithms acting as decision frameworks for such interventions.

In this paper an anti-slip predictive controller is designed and implemented in order to control the rear wheels of a V-PRA (Variable Powered Rear Axle) vehicle. The control algorithm is EPSAC, a Model based Predictive control (MPC) strategy. It uses explicitly a model of the system for the prediction of the future system output, in order to calculate the optimal control input which will bring the system to a required setpoint. The main goals of this predictive controller were setpoint trajectory following, disturbance rejection and maintain overall the stability of the V-PRA vehicle. Although the process is nonlinear, being influenced by several parameters, linear discrete-time ARX models could be obtained based on system linearization around an operating point. An initial SISO controller was developed and tested, based on a Simulink model of the process. The control performances were tested successfully in presence of all kind of disturbances, denoting a robust controller. © 2011 IFAC.

The intrinsic thermodynamical factors that dominate the stability of nanocrystallines are investigated through the microcosmic process of grain *** results suggest that nanocrystallines grows at a certain temperature and the critical temperature is determined by the vacancy formation energy and diffusion activation energy of the *** on the hypothesis,a simple model is proposed to predict the size-dependent critical temperature of grain *** this model,we investigate the thermal stability of nanocrystallines V and Au,compared with the results *** is shown that the critical temperature decreases with decreasing size,showing an evident size *** research reveals that the thermal stability is dependent on the energetic state of the nanocrystallines and the mobility of the inner atoms.

The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is one of the most widely used techniques for image compression. Several algorithms are proposed to implement the DCT-2D. The scaled SDCT algorithm is an optimization of the DCT-1D, which consists in gathering all the multiplications at the end. In this paper, in addition to the hardware implementation on an FPGA, an extended optimization has been performed by merging the multiplications in the quantization block without having an impact on the image quality. Tests using MATLAB environment have shown that our proposed approach produces images with quality comparable to the ones obtained using the JPEG standard. FPGA-based implementations of this proposed approach and the Loeffler's algorithm are proposed and compared in this paper using an Altera Startix FPGA family with the synthesis and implementation tool Quartus II. Results show that our approach outperforms the well known Loeffler's algorithm in terms of processing-speed and resources used. © 2011 IEEE.
