Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has applications in diverse fields, including sports management and behavior classification. Existing HAR methods can be categorized into three main approaches: camera-based, wearable sensor-based, and Wi-Fi sensing-based. Camera-based methods suffer from privacy concerns, while wearable sensor-based methods face limitations in battery longevity and continuous monitoring. Wi-Fi sensing methods mitigate privacy and battery issues but rely on costly Intel 5300 network cards or software-defined radio (SDR) platforms, limiting scalability. This paper presents a cost-effective IoT-based human activity recognition system using ESP32, leveraging its Wi-Fi sensing capabilities. The proposed system follows a structured workflow: (i) channel state information (CSI) is extracted from ESP32 modules, (ii) data preprocessing is performed using Hampel and Gaussian filters for noise and outlier removal, (iii) dimensionality reduction is achieved through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), and (iv) activity classification is conducted using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed system achieves an average recognition accuracy of 98.6 % across six human activities, comparable to high-end Intel 5300-based HAR systems, while significantly reducing hardware costs and improving ease of deployment. © 2025

This study aims to investigate the potential of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems for commercial buildings. Helio-Scope software is utilized to perform simulations to determine the ideal rooftop area for photovoltaic panels. The efficiency of photovoltaic systems is impacted by the shading effects of photovoltaic modules installed in parallel rows. To enhance energy output, the optimal distance between rows is determined, and it is found that 5-feet inter-row spacing provides the best results. The simulation results indicate that with 5-feet inter-row spacing, photovoltaic system has an energy generation of 371.6 MWh, specific yield of 1508.0 kWh/kWp, performance ratio of 82.1%, solar access rate of 98.9%, total solar resource fraction of 96.3% and a total irradiance of 1655.9 kWh/m2. The annual nameplate energy is 425.1 MWh, output energy at irradiance levels is 423.1 MWh, optimal DC output is 378.5 MWh, inverter output is 373.5 MWh, and total energy delivered to the national power grid is 371.6 MWh. The average daily DC inverter input power is 158881.5110 W and the average daily AC inverter output power is 152231.6311 W, showing an inverter efficiency of approximately 95.93%. Moreover, detailed testing of the installed PV system is performed on-site to make sure that equipment’s performance guarantees are achieved, the system is properly installed and its configuration is suitable for commercial operations. The maximum daily output energy generation of an installed photovoltaic (PV) system is 1.33 MWh, and its average energy generation is 1.09 MWh. The voltage of all strings is within the rated range of the inverter, with a maximum voltage of 835 V and a minimum of 698 V, as tested by PV string open-circuit voltage. The inverter efficiency test is also performed, with a maximum efficiency of 98.83% and fill factors ranging from 81.37% to 82.34%. Decentralised Update Selection with Semi-Strategic Experts

Motivated by governance models adopted in blockchain applications, we study the problem of selecting appropriate system updates in a decentralised way. Contrary to most existing voting approaches, we use the input of a set of motivated experts of varying levels of expertise. In particular, we develop an approval voting inspired selection mechanism through which the experts approve or disapprove the different updates according to their perception of the quality of each alternative. Given their opinions, and weighted by their expertise level, a single update is then implemented and evaluated, and the experts receive rewards based on their choices. We show that this mechanism always has approximate pure Nash equilibria and that these achieve a constant factor approximation with respect to the quality benchmark of the optimal alternative. Finally, we study the repeated version of the problem, where the weights of the experts are adjusted after each update, according to their performance. Under mild assumptions about the weights, the extension of our mechanism still has approximate pure Nash equilibria in this setting. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Explicitly Solvable Continuous-time Inference for Partially Observed Markov Processes

Many natural and engineered systems can be modeled as discrete state Markov processes. Often, only a subset of states are directly observable. Inferring the conditional probability that a system occupies a particular hidden state, given the partial observation, is a problem with broad application. In this paper, we introduce a continuous-time formulation of the sum-product algorithm, which is a well-known discrete-time method for finding the hidden states' conditional probabilities, given a set of finite, discrete-time observations. From our new formulation, we can explicitly solve for the conditional probability of occupying any state, given the transition rates and observations within a finite time window. We apply our algorithm to a realistic model of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein for exact inference of the conditional occupancy probability, given a finite time series of partial observations. This paper presents an experimental study that compares the performance of four selected metaheuristic algorithms for optimizing a time delay system model. Time delay system models are complex and challenging to optimize due to their inherent characteristics, such as non-linearity, multi-modality, and constraints. The study includes an explanation of the choice and core functionality of the selected algorithms, which are both baseline and state-of-the-art variants of self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA), state-of-the-art variant from the Success-History-based Adaptive Differential Evolution family of algorithms, with emphasis on diverse search (DISH algorithm), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm. The hyperparameters of the metaheuristic algorithms were set using the iRace automatic algorithm configuration framework. The paper emphasizes the importance of metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time-delay systems to develop more effective and efficient control strategies and precise model identifications. The experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art algorithms with specific adaptive mechanisms like population organization process, diverse search and adaptation mechanisms ensuring a gradual transition from exploration to exploitation. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the challenges and advantages of using metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time delay systems. The results provide valuable insights into the performance of modern metaheuristic algorithms and can help guide the selection of appropriate adaptive mechanisms of metaheuristics.

Flaviviruses,such as dengue virus(DENV),Zika virus(ZIKV),and Japanese encephalitis virus(JEV),represent a substantial public health challenge as there are currently no approved treatments ***,we investigated the antiviral effects of bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloids(BBAs)on flavivirus *** evaluated five specific BBAs—berbamine,tetrandrine,iso-tetrandrine,fangchinoline,and cepharanthine—and found that they effectively inhibited infections by ZIKV,DENV,or JEV by blocking virus entry and genome replication stages in the flavivirus life ***,we synthesized a fluorophore-conjugated BBA and showed that BBAs targeted endolysosomes,causing lysosomal pH *** studies on inhibiting ZIKV infection by BBAs revealed that these compounds blocked TRPML channels,leading to lysosomal dysfunction and reducing the expression of NCAM1,a key receptor for the entry of ZIKV into cells,thereby decreasing cells susceptibility to ZIKV ***,BBAs inhibited the fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes,significantly reducing viral RNA ***,our results suggest that BBAs inhibit flavivirus entry and replication by compromising endolysosomal trafficking and autophagy,respectively,underscoring the potential of BBAs as therapeutic agents against flavivirus infections.

Part-of-speech tagging is the process of assigning words in a given text to appropriate parts-of speech in order to reduce the disambiguation which may arise depending on the contextual usage of the words. In this paper, the problem of word sense disambiguation in Azerbaijani language is addressed by applying part of speech tagging on two varying data corpora, misspelled, and edited (clean) text using 3 different machine learning algorithms: Hidden Markov Model, Long Short-Term Memory, and Conditional Random Fields. The comparative analysis on the outcomes of the mentioned algorithms and their accuracy scores were analysed in the paper. The misspelled dataset for the experiments is provided by Unibank from their chatbot dialogues while the clean textual data was retrieved from the books and newspapers in Azerbaijani. The experiments showed that the Bidirectional LSTM has the highest accuracy scores for both edited (98.2%) and noisy (96.2%) data corpora. Suggested models can be used in the application of algorithms focuses on part of speech tags and syntactic structure of Azerbaijani language which is an agglutinative language belonging to Turkic languages family, thus enabling the research to be further investigated in other agglutinative languages with similar grammatical structure. © 2022 ACM.

Theory of phase reduction for systems with higher-order interactions: a route to Kuramoto models on hypergraphs

Phase reduction is a powerful technique in the study of nonlinear oscillatory systems. Under certain assumptions, it allows us to describe each multidimensional oscillator by a single phase variable, giving rise to simple phase models such as the Kuramoto model. Classically, the method has been applied in the case where the interactions are only pairwise (two-body). However, increasing evidence shows that interactions in real-world systems are not pairwise but higher-order, i.e., many-body. Although synchronization in higher-order systems has received much attention, analytical results are scarce because of the highly nonlinear nature of the framework. In this paper, we fill the gap by presenting a general theory of phase reduction for the case of higher-order interactions. We show that the higher-order topology is preserved in the phase reduced model at the first order and that only odd couplings have an effect on the dynamics when certain symmetries are present. Additionally, we show the power and ductility of the phase reduction approach by applying it to a population of Stuart-Landau oscillators with an all-to-all configuration and with a ring-like hypergraph topology;in both cases, only the analysis of the phase model can provide insights and analytical results. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

When dealing with sensor's data, it's important to keep track of what it's really happening in the tracked environments since failures, interruptions and misreadings must be expected at any time. Especially with logging processes involving extremely voluminous reports, an automatic method to detect entries that are not following the normal distribution of data (i.e. anomalies) should be the ideal solution. In the presented work the task performed by the autoencoder is to generate a reproduction error, used as metric for the classification of a sample in one of two classes: anomalous or non-anomalous. This paper is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in fault tolerance methods for cloud computing. Maintaining high availability and reliability of cloud environments requires fault tolerance. This paper explores fault tolerance in the context of cloud computing and discusses recent challenges and innovations in the field. Moreover, it examines the ongoing research efforts to improve fault-tolerance architectures. At the end of the paper, the paper presents system-level metrics that are relevant to fault tolerance.
