Tower solar thermal power generation is a new type of low-carbon and environmentally friendly clean energy technology. In this paper, a single-objective optimization model is established with the maximum annual average thermal output per unit mirror area of the heliostat field as the objective function. By optimizing the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate, the annual average output thermal power can be maximized while meeting the rated power. The heliostat field is distributed in a circular shape. As the seasons change, the light intensity received by the heliostat field is uneven, so the optical efficiency of the heliostats is also different. We simplify the heliostat field into S area (area with higher optical efficiency) and W area (area with lower optical efficiency) based on the optical efficiency distribution of heliostats. At different locations, According to the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate generated by random functions, substituting these parameters into the efficiency model in this paper, and the random search algorithm is used to traverse the maximum annual output thermal power and the corresponding heliostat parameters. In the shadow occlusion loss model, we have grid to set up the heliostat and use the coordinate conversion to solve the shadow occlusion loss efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

In order to study the influence of seabed topography on sound propagation under non-ideal conditions, a simulation model of low frequency sound propagation of whole waveguide is established by using finite element method (FEM). The action mechanism of the topography with seamounts on the components of the seismic wave field is studied in time domain. The simulation results show that the propagation of various seismic wave components can be seen intuitively from the time domain. Scholte waves can be excited easily in a suitable range from the seabed, and can propagate along the seabed for a long distance with small attenuation and strong stability. The presence of a seamount allows Scholte waves to scatter, and Scholte waves can travel along the surface of the seamount to the back of the seamount. The path and energy intensity of sound wave change with the change of terrain. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The accurate prediction of the friction angle of clays is crucial for assessing slope stability in engineering *** study addresses the importance of estimating the friction angle and presents the development of four soft computing models:YJ-FPA-MLPnet,YJ-CRO-MLPnet,YJ-ACOC-MLPnet,and *** of all,the Yeo-Johnson(YJ)transformation technique was used to stabilize the variance of data and make it more suitable for parametric statistical models that assume normality and equal *** technique is expected to improve the accuracy of friction angle prediction *** friction angle prediction models then utilized multi-layer perceptron neural networks(MLPnet)and metaheuristic optimization algorithms to further enhance performance,including flower pollination algorithm(FPA),coral reefs optimization(CRO),ant colony optimization continuous(ACOC),and cuckoo search algorithm(CSA).The prediction models without the YJ technique,***-MLPnet,CRO-MLPnet,ACOC-MLPnet,and CSA-MLPnet,were then compared to those with the YJ technique,***-FPA-MLPnet,YJ-CRO-MLPnet,YJ-ACOC-MLPnet,and *** these,the YJ-CRO-MLPnet model demonstrated superior reliability,achieving an accuracy of up to 83%in predicting the friction angle of clay in practical engineering *** improvement is significant,as it represents an increase from 1.3%to approximately 20%compared to the models that did not utilize the YJ transformation technique.

Bridge structures are exposed to several chronic and abrupt stressors, among which the combined effects of corrosion and earthquakes pose a major threat to their long-term safety. Probabilistic risk assessment frameworks that quantify and propagate uncertainties inherent to these phenomena are necessary to mitigate this threat. This paper proposes a dynamic Bayesian network for state-dependent seismic fragility functions, capturing corrosion and seismic effects over time. Markovian transitions among deterioration states for different bridge components are developed, combining chloride diffusion and corrosion propagation models with non-stationary Gamma processes. State-dependent fragility curves are derived based on non-linear dynamic time-history analyses given possible degradation configurations of the structure, accounting for uncertainties in material, geometry, and deterioration parameters. Record-to-record variability is captured using synthetic ground motions. Results on a 4-span Gerber bridge showcase the suitability of the framework for describing life-cycle fragility, and its capacity for embedding in advanced algorithmic decision-making workflows is discussed. © 2023 The Author(s).

This preliminary study explored how to make otherwise passive bystanders into an integral part of a virtual reality (VR) experience using asymmetric game design. We present a fully implemented collaborative VR game, co-designed by Namibian school children. The team needs to solve puzzles, whereby one player, using a VR headset, enters the digital world of Candyland, communicating with the other teammates, who are using a printed puzzle book. Ten Namibian school children, split into three groups, evaluated the game. Both the children inside and outside of VR were excited and eager to play the game through, despite the game being too complex, with too little feedback and a number of design issues, which required much guidance from the researchers. © 2022 Owner/Author.

In many countries, recent boosts in the construction and renovation sectors and energy efficiency directives are driving a growing interest in the built environment among designers and maintainers. In this context, customized software solutions tailored for Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Building Energy Modelling (BEM) are proving to be indispensable for optimizing operational efficiency within the architecture, Engineering, Construction, Owner, and Operator (AECOO) sector and for facilitating the generation of buildings' Digital Twins (DTs). These DTs rely on accurate geometry and ancillary information (semantics, sensors, etc.) to define properties of single elements, enabling crucial simulations in structural conditions or energy needs. However, BIM and BEM model creation and their enrichment with semantic information are highly time-consuming and prone to manual errors. Hence, there is an increasing demand for automatic methods featuring a high level of geometric accuracy to reconstruct building elements, such as walls, floors, and openings captured via 3D reality-based surveying. This paper introduces an automated method for creating Boundary Representation (B-Rep) models from 3D surveying data for the generation of digital building replicas. The method is based on the detection and computation of topological elements from 3D reality-based point clouds. It proves valuable for architectural or design workflows and for conducting energy or quality system simulations. © Author(s) 2024.

The shift toward electric vehicles requires the development of an extensive public electric charging infrastructure. With the aim of simulating hundreds of configurations for charging stations, street directions, crossing, etc., we need to find the best solution in short periods of time to predict and prevent traffic congestion. Thus, we study different models to discretize and manage vehicle movements using a synchronous cellular automata, with an emphasis in reducing the amount of (frequently accessed) memory and execution time, and improving the thread parallelism. This is guided by the classical lemma of computer architecture "make the common case fast", thus optimizing those code sections where most of the execution time is spent. Experiments carried out for microscopic traffic simulations indicate that compiled languages increase run-time efficiency by more than 70×. Then several strategies are studied, such as storing future velocities of each vehicle so that neighbor vehicles can benefit from this information. Using a single 12-core PC, we get to a total run-time for a unidimensional simulation that is very close to that reached by supercomputers composed of thousands of cores that use interpreted languages. This may also greatly reduce the energy consumed. Although some performance degradation may occur when complex situations are introduced (crossroads, traffic lights, etc.), this degradation would not be significant if the length of the streets were large enough. © ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2024.

The electrification of road transportation requires the development of an extensive infrastructure of public charging stations (CSs). In order to avoid them contributing to increased traffic congestion and air pollution in a city, it is very important to optimize their deployment. To tackle this challenge, we present microscopic traffic simulations with a hybrid cellular automata and agent-based model to study different strategies to route electric vehicles (EVs) to CSs, when their battery level is low. EVs and CSs are modeled as agents with capability to demonstrate complex behaviors. Our models take into account the complex nature of traffic and decisions about routes and their predicted behavior. We show that a synthetic city is very useful for investigating the routing behavior and traffic patterns. We have found that a smart routing strategy can contribute to balancing the distribution of EVs among the different CSs in a distributed network, which is the CS layout that produces less traffic congestion. Contrary to our initial expectations, ensuring a balanced distribution throughout the city did not necessarily result in an increase in overall productivity. This observation led to a deeper exploration of the nuances of urban transport dynamics. Furthermore, our study emphasizes the superiority of time-based routing over its distance-based counterpart and highlights the inherent limitations of transportation within a city. © ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2024.

The increasing emphasis on sustainable retrofitting of buildings has brought attention to the need for optimizing trade-offs among critical objectives, such as time, cost, energy consumption, and risk. This study proposes an opposition-based multi-objective ant colony optimization (OB-MOACO) framework to address these challenges effectively. The framework incorporates opposition-based learning to enhance solution exploration and convergence in multi-objective optimization problems, specifically tailored for sustainable retrofitting projects. The study develops a time–cost–energy–risk trade-off (TCERT) model with four objectives: minimizing retrofitting time, cost, energy consumption, and risks. The model integrates constraints related to budget, project timelines, and energy efficiency to ensure feasibility and sustainability. A detailed case study of retrofitting a mixed-use building is presented, encompassing 11 aspects such as structural reinforcement, energy efficiency enhancement, and accessibility improvements. Results demonstrate the superiority of OB-MOACO over conventional methods like NSGA-III, MODE, and MOPSO in achieving Pareto-optimal solutions. Key performance metrics, including hypervolume (HV) and inverted generational distance (IGD), highlight the model's efficiency in balancing competing objectives. The study contributes to advancing sustainable retrofitting practices by providing an innovative, cost-effective, and energy-efficient decision-making framework. Implications for practitioners and policymakers are discussed, alongside recommendations for future research. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The deterioration of transmission lines has a profound effect on the reliability and safety of the power grid. Accurate estimation of their age is critical for effective maintenance and investment planning. This paper proposes a method that combines the percentage statistical health index (%SHI) with failure probability curve-fitting (FPCF) to estimate the ages of overhead transmission lines. %SHI assesses equipment condition through scoring and weighting, while FPCF correlates SHI with the probability of failure. Evaluation of 924 towers situated in various terrains across Thailand reveals discrepancies between estimated and actual ages, influenced by environmental factors. To enhance reliability, proactive maintenance strategies such as regular inspections and advanced monitoring are recommended. © 2024 The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers (KIEE).
