From pathogens and computer viruses to genes and memes, contagion models have found widespread utility across the natural and social sciences. Despite their success and breadth of adoption, the approach and structure of these models remain surprisingly siloed by field. Given the siloed nature of their development and widespread use, one persistent assumption is that a given contagion can be studied in isolation, independently from what else might be spreading in the population. In reality, countless contagions of biological and social nature interact within hosts (interacting with existing beliefs, or the immune system) and across hosts (interacting in the environment, or affecting transmission mechanisms). Additionally, from a modeling perspective, we know that relaxing these assumptions has profound effects on the physics and translational implications of the models. Here, we review mechanisms for interactions in social and biological contagions, as well as the models and frameworks developed to include these interactions in the study of the contagions. We highlight existing problems related to the inference of interactions and to the scalability of mathematical models and identify promising avenues of future inquiries. In doing so, we highlight the need for interdisciplinary efforts under a unified science of contagions and for removing a common dichotomy between social and biological contagions. This study explores the gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties and mechanical performance of eight Fe-based alloys with varying elemental compositions and densities. Different parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients, linear attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, tenth-value layer, mean free path, fast neutron removal cross-sections, transmission factors were analysed using PHITS and Phy-X/PSD codes. Moreover, elastic modulus values were calculated for each alloy sample. Our results reveal that the S9 alloy, with high density and tungsten contribution, exhibited superior shielding and mechanical properties, achieving the lowest TF, HVL, and TVL values. In contrast, the low-density S1 alloy performed weakest, reflecting its lighter elemental composition. Intermediate alloys like MAR-302 and Cupero-Nickel showed balanced performance, suitable for moderate shielding needs. Strong correlations between elemental compositions, particularly high-Z elements like tungsten and boron, and shielding efficiency were observed. It can be concluded that optimizing elemental composition and density is critical for designing alloys with enhanced multifunctional properties. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

This study investigates the transient magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow and heat and mass transfer over an inclined, radiative, and permeable surface under the influence of viscous dissipation and Ohmic heating in a porous medium. A regular perturbation technique is employed to solve the governing coupled, nonlinear partial differential equations that describe the velocity, temperature, and concentration fields. The analysis focuses on key physical parameters, including the skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number, along with the corresponding field profiles. The results highlight the significant impact of inclination angle, porosity, and thermal radiation on the transport behavior. Specifically, thermal radiation is found to reduce both the temperature distribution and the Nusselt number, indicating a damping effect on thermal transport. Conversely, the presence of a heat source elevates the temperature while enhancing heat transfer. Additionally, the Soret number contributes to an increase in both temperature and solute concentration due to thermal diffusion effects. The findings correspond well with previously published studies. In other words, when the inclined angle, porous parameter, and radiation parameter are not considered, all outcomes closely resemble those of the previously published works. This study offers valuable insights applicable to various industrial processes, including chemical manufacturing and thermal management systems.

Transformative artificially intelligent tools, such as ChatGPT, designed to generate sophisticated text indistinguishable from that produced by a human, are applicable across a wide range of contexts. The technology presents opportunities as well as, often ethical and legal, challenges, and has the potential for both positive and negative impacts for organisations, society, and individuals. Offering multi-disciplinary insight into some of these, this article brings together 43 contributions from experts in fields such as computer science, marketing, information systems, education, policy, hospitality and tourism, management, publishing, and nursing. The contributors acknowledge ChatGPT's capabilities to enhance productivity and suggest that it is likely to offer significant gains in the banking, hospitality and tourism, and information technology industries, and enhance business activities, such as management and marketing. Nevertheless, they also consider its limitations, disruptions to practices, threats to privacy and security, and consequences of biases, misuse, and misinformation. However, opinion is split on whether ChatGPT's use should be restricted or legislated. Drawing on these contributions, the article identifies questions requiring further research across three thematic areas: knowledge, transparency, and ethics;digital transformation of organisations and societies;and teaching, learning, and scholarly research. The avenues for further research include: identifying skills, resources, and capabilities needed to handle generative AI;examining biases of generative AI attributable to training datasets and processes;exploring business and societal contexts best suited for generative AI implementation;determining optimal combinations of human and generative AI for various tasks;identifying ways to assess accuracy of text produced by generative AI;and uncovering the ethical and legal issues in using generative AI across different contexts. © 2023 The Authors

Internet of Things (IoT) services for personal devices and smart homes provided by commercial solutions are typically proprietary and closed. These services provide little control to the end users, for instance to take ownership of their data and enabling services, which hinders these solutions' wider acceptance. In this demo paper, we argue for an approach to deploy professional IoT services on user-controlled infrastructure at the network edge. The users would benefit from the ability to choose the most suitable service from different IoT service offerings, like the one which satisfies their privacy requirements, and third-party service providers could offer more tailored IoT services at customer premises. We conduct the demonstration on microclouds, which have been built with the Cloudy platform in the *** community network. The demonstration is conducted from the perspective of end users, who wish to deploy professional IoT data management and analytics services in volunteer microclouds. © 2018 IEEE.

An overview of existing urban software mobile applications of the transport and economic direction is given. A model of a functional rationalizer of consumer behavior is being built. The software model of the functional rationalizer of consumer behavior (SM FRCB) was developed for the first time. PMFRCB allows the user to expand the number of his preferred needs (occupations, activities) during the daily cycle through intelligent recommendations. Also, SM FRCB allows you to optimize needs (activities, activities) at the cost and rate of their use. The SM FRCB is made in Python_3 using the libraries matplotlib, collections, numpy, pyplot, mplot3d. The analysis of consumer behavior before and after using the functional rationalizer model is carried out. The graphical results of a structural analysis of the costs of old and new consumer behavior, analysis of consumer behavior within the boundaries of the theory of possibilities and the model of transport behavior of a resident before and after applying the functional rationalizer model are presented. The prospects of further improving the SM FRCB are considered.

This study investigates the neutron and photon attenuation properties of various Nylon-Based and Non-Nylon-Based Polymers as soft protection materials for space technology and related applications. We analyzed the material densities, mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half-value layers, mean free paths, effective atomic numbers, effective electron densities, fast neutron effective removal cross-sections, and energy absorption buildup factor values of several polymers through PHITS code and other computational tools. Nylon Type 11 (Rilsan) emerged as a standout, offering substantial resistance to neutron radiation, highlighting its potential in sectors where neutron shielding is paramount. Conversely, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), characterized by its unique composition, demonstrated superior gamma-ray attenuation capabilities, making it an attractive option for environments predominantly exposed to gamma radiation. Our results showed that the efficacy of PVC in gamma shielding and Nylon Type 11's (Rilsan) notable neutron attenuation, demonstrating their potential as lightweight and environmentally sustainable alternatives for specific applications where lead's heavy weight poses a challenge. While lead remains superior in gamma shielding due to its high atomic number and density, the tested polymers offer practical advantages in applications requiring weight reduction and environmental considerations. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In this paper, we use reinforcement learning to find effective decoding strategies for binary linear codes. We start by reviewing several iterative decoding algorithms that involve a decision-making process at each step, including bit-flipping (BF) decoding, residual belief propagation, and anchor decoding. We then illustrate how such algorithms can be mapped to Markov decision processes allowing for data-driven learning of optimal decision strategies, rather than basing decisions on heuristics or intuition. As a case study, we consider BF decoding for both the binary symmetric and additive white Gaussian noise channel. Our results show that learned BF decoders can offer a range of performance-complexity trade-offs for the considered Reed-Muller and BCH codes, and achieve near-optimal performance in some cases. We also demonstrate learning convergence speed-ups when biasing the learning process towards correct decoding decisions, as opposed to relying only on random explorations and past knowledge.
