In Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems, the orthogonality of the spreading codes used to achieve multiple access over a channel is severely degraded due to multi-path interference. Expensive equalization techniques are needed to recover the transmitted signal. The Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) equalizer is a sub-optimal equalizer that is a good compromise between computational complexity and communication system performance. It uses computationally-intensive matrix inversion operations to perform equalization. In this paper, we address the computational challenges of implementing the LMMSE equalizer on Software Defined Radio (SDR) platforms. SDR platforms are favored by the wireless industry due to their significant benefits of reduced development costs and accelerated time-to-market. We present COordinate Rotation DIgital computer (CORDIC) Instruction Set architecture (ISA) extensions that speed up the LMMSE equalization algorithm. The costs and benefits of the ISA extensions are evaluated on the Sandbridge Sandblaster 3000 (SB3000) low-power, multithreaded SDR processor. The proposed ISA extensions provide significant performance improvements with little hardware overhead, while improving the accuracy of the LMMSE Equalizer.

Distributed formation control of manipulators' end-effector with internal model-based disturbance rejection

This paper addresses the problem of end-effector formation control for manipulators that are subjected to external disturbances: input disturbance torques and disturbance forces at each end-effector. The disturbances are assumed to be non-vanishing and are superposition of finite number of sinusoidal and step signals. The formation control objective is achieved by assigning virtual springs between end-effectors, by adding damping terms at joints, and by incorporating internal model-based dynamic compensators to counteract the effect of the disturbances;all of which presents a clear physical interpretation of the proposed approach. The combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity to meet up with high energy demands of buildings, increases pollution;deteriorating the environment and accelerating climate change. The idea of net zero energy buildings (nZEB) was developed to reduce building energy use and pollution. However, there are still many obstacles to implementing the nZEB idea, notably in sub-Saharan Africa, where energy consumption and pollutant emissions from buildings are particularly high. This article focuses on Cameroon, Senegal, and Côte d'Ivoire and proposes guidelines for making a smooth transition to nZEB in sub-Saharan Africa, as are examples of strategies that might be used to minimize energy consumption in buildings and pollution. The path has been shown to consist of the following steps: conducting a baseline assessment;creating building energy codes and standards;conducting a stakeholder analysis;carrying out capacity building and awareness-raising;setting up financing mechanisms and incentives;creating a strong supply chain;setting up a monitoring and evaluation framework;piloting nZEB projects;disseminating best practices;and scaling up adoption. Tower solar thermal power generation is a new type of low-carbon and environmentally friendly clean energy technology. In this paper, a single-objective optimization model is established with the maximum annual average thermal output per unit mirror area of the heliostat field as the objective function. By optimizing the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate, the annual average output thermal power can be maximized while meeting the rated power. The heliostat field is distributed in a circular shape. As the seasons change, the light intensity received by the heliostat field is uneven, so the optical efficiency of the heliostats is also different. We simplify the heliostat field into S area (area with higher optical efficiency) and W area (area with lower optical efficiency) based on the optical efficiency distribution of heliostats. At different locations, According to the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate generated by random functions, substituting these parameters into the efficiency model in this paper, and the random search algorithm is used to traverse the maximum annual output thermal power and the corresponding heliostat parameters. In the shadow occlusion loss model, we have grid to set up the heliostat and use the coordinate conversion to solve the shadow occlusion loss efficiency.

A methodology to automatically optimize dynamic memory managers applying grammatical evolution

Modern consumer devices must execute multimedia applications that exhibit high resource utilization. In order to efficiently execute these applications, the dynamic memory subsystem needs to be optimized. This complex task can be tackled in two complementary ways: optimizing the application source code or designing custom dynamic memory management mechanisms. Currently, the first approach has been well established, and several automatic methodologies have been proposed. Regarding the second approach, software engineers often write custom dynamic memory managers from scratch, which is a difficult and error-prone work. This paper presents a novel way to automatically generate custom dynamic memory managers optimizing both performance and memory usage of the target application. The design space is pruned using grammatical evolution converging to the best dynamic memory manager implementation for the target application. Our methodology achieves important improvements (62.55% and 30.62% better on average in performance and memory usage, respectively) when its results are compared to five different general-purpose dynamic memory managers. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

The popularity of small wind turbines would rise in future, because of electricity prices are still growing. Next generation of small wind-turbines can have higher efficiency values. Under wind gusts and turbulences, the system should be very sensitive to wind conditions. In this work, it is presented a control system that can improve the performance of commercial small-scale wind turbines by including active pitch and load control. We show the electrical design of a smart active pitch control to increase the energy generation of micro-wind turbines ( © 2022, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). The modeling, parameters identification, and linear and nonlinear feedback control designs of an electronic throttle control (ETC) system is considered. A commercially available ETC system made by Bosch is selected for our investigation. The unknown parameters identified are used in designing linear and nonlinear controllers. Simulations and extensive experiments were conducted. A real-time linear controller was implemented with the xPC Target. The ETC model is then extended to a separately excited nonlinear DC motor model. The nonlinear controller is designed using the input-output feedback linearization technique; the extension proves to be of solid theoretical value. The results presented in this paper can be considered as an interesting and important case study encompassing system modeling, parameters identification, linear and nonlinear controller designs, and real-time control. The techniques and methodology developed are applicable to similar and/or other types of systems.

Activity recognition, as an important component of behavioral monitoring and intervention, has attracted enormous attention, especially in Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) and Remote Health Monitoring (RHM) paradigms. While recently resource constrained wearable devices have been gaining popularity, their battery life is limited and constrained by the frequent wireless transmission of data to more computationally powerful back-ends. This paper proposes an ultra-low power activity recognition system using a novel adaptive compressed sensing technique that aims to minimize transmission costs. Coarse-grained on-body sensor localization and unsupervised clustering modules are devised to autonomously reconfigure the compressed sensing module for further power saving. We perform a thorough heuristic optimization using Grammatical Evolution (GE) to ensure minimal computation overhead of the proposed methodology. Our evaluation on a real-world dataset and a low power wearable sensing node demonstrates that our approach can reduce the energy consumption of the wireless data transmission up to 81.2% and 61.5%, with up to 60.6% and 35.0% overall power savings in comparison with baseline and a naive state-of-the-art approaches, respectively. These solutions lead to an average activity recognition accuracy of 89.0%—only 4.8% less than the baseline accuracy—while having a negligible energy overhead of on-node computation. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

According to complex of gearbox test online, this paper introduces a gearbox test system based on automatic shift manipulator. Optimal shift law plays an important role in improving work efficiency and prolonging service life of gearbox. It was more intelligent that judging optimal shift by using neural network. The shift procedure was a complicated nonlinear time-varying one, involving many variables, so the expert system was used to control shift procedure. Then it was a more personification procedure owing to fast and accurate operations. Good running state of system proved success for application of neural network and expert system in product test. Moreover the system had some guiding significance in intelligent and personification control of manipulator.

Material for a computer architecture class based on four progressively more complex microprogrammed circuits is described. The circuits and their associated microassemblers and simulators are discussed. Interestingly, the simulators allow students to understand the workings of the hardware more fully than is possible using the hardware alone.
