HAFNI-enabled largescale platform for neuroimaging informatics (HELPNI)

Tremendous efforts have thus been devoted on the establishment of functional MRI informatics systems that recruit a comprehensive collection of statistical/computational approaches for fMRI data analysis. However, the state-of-the-art fMRI informatics systems are especially designed for specific fMRI sessions or studies of which the data size is not really big, and thus has difficulty in handling fMRI ‘big data.’ Given the size of fMRI data are growing explosively recently due to the advancement of neuroimaging technologies, an effective and efficient fMRI informatics system which can process and analyze fMRI big data is much needed. To address this challenge, in this work, we introduce our newly developed informatics platform, namely, ‘HAFNI-enabled largescale platform for neuroimaging informatics (HELPNI).’ HELPNI implements our recently developed computational framework of sparse representation of whole-brain fMRI signals which is called holistic atlases of functional networks and interactions (HAFNI) for fMRI data analysis. HELPNI provides integrated solutions to archive and process large-scale fMRI data automatically and structurally, to extract and visualize meaningful results information from raw fMRI data, and to share open-access processed and raw data with other collaborators through web. We tested the proposed HELPNI platform using publicly available 1000 Functional Connectomes dataset including over 1200 subjects. We identified consistent and meaningful functional brain networks across individuals and populations based on resting state fMRI (rsfMRI) big data. Using efficient sampling module, the experimental results demonstrate that our HELPNI system has superior performance than other systems for large-scale fMRI data in terms of processing and storing the data and associated results much faster. © 2015, The Author(s).

Memory bandwidth optimization of SpMV on GPGPUs

It is an important task to improve performance for sparse matrix vector multiplication （SpMV）, and it is a difficult task because of its irregular memory access. Gen- eral purpose GPU （GPGPU） provides high computing abil- ity and substantial bandwidth that cannot be fully exploited by SpMV due to its irregularity. In this paper, we propose two novel methods to optimize the memory bandwidth for SpMV on GPGPU. First, a new storage format is proposed to exploit memory bandwidth of GPU architecture more effi- ciently. The new storage format can ensure that there are as many non-zeros as possible in the format which is suitable to exploit the memory bandwidth of the GPU. Second, we pro- pose a cache blocking method to improve the performance of SpMV on GPU architecture. The sparse matrix is partitioned into sub-blocks that are stored in CSR format. With the block- ing method, the corresponding part of vector x can be reused in the GPU cache, so the time to access the global memory for vector x is reduced heavily. Experiments are carried out on three GPU platforms, GeForce 9800 GX2, GeForce GTX 480, and Tesla K40. Experimental results show that both new methods can efficiently improve the utilization of GPU mem- ory bandwidth and the performance of the GPU.

New multimedia embedded applications are increasingly dynamic, and rely on Dynamically-allocated Data Types (DDTs) to store their data. The optimization of DDTs for each target embedded system is a time-consuming process due to the large design space of possible DDTs implementations. Thus, suitable exploration methods for embedded design metrics (memory accesses, memory usage and power consumption) need to be developed. This paper presents a design flow to tackle the optimization of DDTs in multimedia applications. By profiling of the original desktop application and using evolutionary algorithms, the proposed approach is able to find solutions 1584x faster than other state-of-the-art heuristics in an automated way. Moreover, we study the use of elitist Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) to explore DDT implementations, which offer 75% more optimal solutions to the system designer for the implementation of the final embedded application. To this end, we analyze the quality of the solutions by comparing three MOEAS and other optimization heuristics. Our results in two object-oriented multimedia embedded applications show that elitist MOEAs (NSGA-II and SPEA2) offer better solutions than simple non-elitist schemes (VEGA) and alternative well-known optimization heuristics.

Ground Control Stations (GCS) are essential tools to monitor and command real-world complex missions involving Unmanned Vehicles (UVs). As the number and types of UVs in the mission grows, implementing a robust and adaptable GCS, capable of simplifying and reducing operator' interactions and mental workloads, becomes an engineering challenge. To address it, this paper presents a new Adaptive-Real-Time (ART)-GCS that 1) allows to monitor and control a runtime changing number of heterogeneous UVs, 2) adapt its GUI to the mission requirements and operators workload to minimize their fatigue and stress, and 3) provide support to experiments with actual and simulated UVs. To show its benefits in real-world missions, this paper presents a field experiment where, for safety reasons, a simulated unmanned aerial vehicle has to find an oil-spill that must be enclosed by a containment boom dragged by two real unmanned surface vehicles.

This paper aims to provide control strategies for distributed micro-storage energy systems at the residential level to contribute to smart grid goals. The operation of local Energy Storage Systems (ESS) at homes in a Smart Community with distributed generation based of renewable energies is analyzed by simulation. Each individual home receive the active and reactive power set-points from the Smart Community Energy Management System (SCEMS), acting as an aggregator of resources in the community according to the expected demand and production. Besides, in case the ESS has got available capacity, once the SCEMS requirements are satisfied, it is used to inject the harmonic current components demanded by the household circuitry. It allows a local improvement in the power quality of the demanded current, and so contributes to the global power quality consumption of the community. Simulation results showing the operation of the local ESS are presented to validate the proposed control strategies. © 2016 IEEE.

As quantum computing systems mature and move from laboratories to production computing environments, corresponding software stacks are becoming key for their successful utilization. In particular, the expected use of quantum systems as HPC accelerators requires a deep integration with the existing and widely deployed HPC software stacks. Additionally, new requirements such as dynamic compilation and new challenges for tools and programming models must be considered. We tackle these challenges by developing the Munich Quantum Software Stack - a comprehensive initiative by the Munich Quantum Valley to offer a flexible, efficient, and user-oriented software environment. In this poster, we describe the core components and workflows, and how they will enable this transformation from quantum experiments to quantum accelerators. © 2023 IEEE.

The posit number system, which is proposed as a replacement of IEEE floating-point numbers, is in the spotlight of Arithmetic research due to the recent breakthroughs. This format claims to provide more accurate results with the same bitwidth than standard floating point, but the run-time variability during the detection of the posit fields involves a hardware design challenge. In this work, we propose parameterized designs for multiple posit functional units, including addition and multiplication, and integrate them as templates of the FloPoCo framework. The integration of the proposed algorithms within FloPoCo can provide synthesizable VHDL code for posit arithmetic of any possible configuration 〈n, es〉. Experiments show an improvement in terms of area and energy with respect to state-of-the-art works up to 35.9% and 30.8%, respectively.

The technological improvements of recent years made possible to give a boost to immersive technologies such as virtual or augmented reality. This impulse has lowered costs, making it possible for anyone to create content in 360 degrees. In education, this allows the student to be easily placed in contexts where otherwise a large number of resources would be needed. There are currently many applications for the creation of interactive activities, but few totally free and even less with the ability to integrate into different Learning Management Systems. It is difficult for teachers to implement interactive learning experiences and even more so to obtain detailed feedback from students. This article details the creation of an interactive learning and assessment activity, combining text, interactive videos and 360-degree scenes, capable of providing information on student interaction through an xAPI. This information will be collected in a Learning Record Store that can be taken as a data source by Learning and Content Management Systems, opening the opportunity to apply learning analytics techniques. As an example, we used a tool for creating a serious game that serves to prepare a laboratory practice of the subject Local Networks, providing a fast, intuitive and useful way to apply the methodology Flip-Game Engineering and Technology (Flip-GET) developed by researchers of the University of Cadiz. © 2019 IEEE.

This work presents an integrated recommendation system capable of providing support in healthcare critical environments such as Intensive Care Units or Stroke Care Units using Machine Learning techniques. The system can manage several patients by reading monitoring hemodynamic data in real-time, presenting current death risk probability, and showing recommendations that would reduce such probability and, in some cases, avoid death. This system introduces a novel method to produce recommendations based on genetic models and supervised machine learning. Lock-free simulation algorithm to enhance the performance of sequential and parallel DEVS simulators in shared-memory architectures

This paper presents a new algorithm for the Discrete EVent System Specification (DEVS) formalism that improves the performance of simulating complex systems by reducing the number of iterations through the model components in each simulation step. It also minimizes unnecessary visits to model components by propagating simulation routines only when necessary. Additionally, we provide two parallel versions of this new simulation algorithm that use work-stealing scheduling and avoid locking mechanisms without compromising the validity of the execution in shared-memory architectures. We implemented the proposed algorithms in the xDEVS simulator and evaluated their performance using the DEVStone synthetic benchmark. The results show that the proposed algorithms outperform state-of-the-art alternatives. For computationally intensive models, parallel implementations achieve high parallelism efficiency. Furthermore, they are more resilient to model complexity than the sequential algorithm, showing better performance for complex models even without computational overhead in state transition functions.
