Aiming at a quantitative understanding of basic aspects of pedestrian dynamics, extensive and high-accuracy measurements of real-life pedestrian trajectories have been performed. A measurement strategy based on Microsoft Kinect TM has been used. Specifically, more than 100.000 pedestrians have been tracked while walking along a trafficked corridor at the Eindhoven University of technology, The Netherlands. The obtained trajectories have been analyzed as ensemble data. The main result consists of a statistical descriptions of pedestrian characteristic kinematic quantities such as positions and fundamental diagrams, possibly conditioned to the local crowd flow (e.g. co-flow or counter-flow).

In this paper, we address the column-based low-rank matrix approximation problem using a novel parallel approach. Our approach is based on the divide-and-combine idea. We first perform column selection on submatrices of an original data matrix in parallel, and then combine the selected columns into the final output. Our approach enjoys a theoretical relative-error upper bound. In addition, our column-based low-rank approximation partitions data in a deterministic way and makes no assumptions about matrix coherence. Compared with other traditional methods, our approach is scalable on largescale matrices. Finally, experiments on both simulated and real world data show that our approach is both efficient and effective.

Manual sleep stage classification is a tedious process that takes a lot of time to sleep experts performing data analysis or studies on this field. Moreover errors and inconsistencies between classifications of the same data are frequent. Due to this, there is a great need of automatic classification systems to support reliable classification. This work extends the work by Herrera et al. (International Journal of Neural Systems 10.1142/ S0129065713500123), inspecting the use of two techniques to improve the accuracy of sleep stage classifiers based on support vector machines from electroencephalogram, electrooculogram and electromyogram signals. Moreover, three different support vector machine multi-classifiers have been tested to evaluate and compare their performance. To accomplish these tasks, three different feature extraction techniques are applied to the electroencephalogram signals. First, the joint use of these feature sets, together with the electrooculogram and electromyogram information, is inspected (and compared with the use of each feature extraction method separately). Second the possibility of using nearby stages information to predict the current stage is inspected. Results obtained show significant improvements in the classification rates achieved using the two proposed techniques. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Astronomical images are characterized by having a high component of noise, a non-homogeneous background, and a great number of sources (objects) difficult to identify even by experts. All these factors are especially remarkable in high wavelength images such as infrared and radio. Hence, great efforts have been done to solve the automatic detection of sources in this type of images. In this paper, we propose a new approach based on multiscale decomposition and the recently developed Distilled Sensing method. Their combined use allows the minimization of the complex background effects as well as the highlighting of the sources. The experimental results obtained using public infrared and radio images demonstrate the validity of the approach, detecting a greater number of true sources than the original Distilled Sensing and the well-known SExtractor algorithm.

This paper describes the use of ant colony models for photographic rendering, that is, for the depiction or interpretation of photographic images. A description of a previously proposed ant-based edge detection method called pherographia is given in order to contextualize this paper's proposal. Then, the application of the KANTS algorithm to photo-rendering is introduced. KANTS is ant-based clustering algorithm described by a set of equations that model the local behavior of simple units (ants). These units represent data samples. When moving on a heterogeneous 2-dimensional lattice of vectors, global behavior emerges from the local interaction between the ants, which self-organize into clusters. In this paper, a data set consists of the RGB values of a digital (or digitalized) photograph. Two different approaches for the initialization of the environment are tested, each one resulting in radically different output images: when the environment is initialized with the RGB values of the same image that is used to generate the data set, the final result is very similar to the original photo; a random initialization of the environment leads to an abstract interpretation of the photo. The results are contextualized within previous swarm artworks by the authors.

The Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observatories recently discovered gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral. A short gamma-ray burst (GRB) that followed the merger of this binary was also recorded by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM), and the Anticoincidence Shield for the Spectrometer for the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), indicating particle acceleration by the source. The precise location of the event was determined by optical detections of emission following the merger. We searched for high-energy neutrinos from the merger in the GeV–EeV energy range using the ANTARES, IceCube, and Pierre Auger Observatories. No neutrinos directionally coincident with the source were detected within ±500 s around the merger time. Additionally, no MeV neutrino burst signal was detected coincident with the merger. We further carried out an extended search in the direction of the source for high-energy neutrinos within the 14-day period following the merger, but found no evidence of emission. We used these results to probe dissipation mechanisms in relativistic outflows driven by the binary neutron star merger. The non-detection is consistent with model predictions of short GRBs observed at a large off-axis angle. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Based on nonlinear finite element method (FEM), the effect of back berm has been systematically studied. It is found that the lateral displacement of embankment could be reduced by back berm effectively, and the stability of embankment increased rapidly with the width of back berm enlarged. There is a critical value of width of back berm, that the stability of embankment is no more increased with the width of back berm enlarged than critical value. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Effective design of shared mediated spaces, information and connectedness requires theory and practice from a range of disciplines such as found in European projects like Together Anywhere, Together Anytime (TA2) and the EIT ICT Labs Mediating Presence activity. Building on this work we continue to investigate the changes in the European digital media industry such as changed traditional distribution of media content and the progressive integration of (social) communication means in information distribution and shared mediated spaces. Our past research has given valuable insights in how to design and evaluate systems and services that provide a high quality of experience, in how trust is established in mediated environments, and how the formation of tacit communication between participants in new distributed and connected media is negotiated. In the new Seventh Framework Program project COnnected Media and Presence from European Institute of technology (COMPEIT) we aim to enhance the quality of experience in face-to-face and broadcast communication further in three domains: 1) Spatial connectedness, 2) Social connectedness and 3) Information connectedness, by developing three key services: Shared Experience with Tangible Interaction (SETI);Broadcast Presence Studio (BPS) and Mixed-Reality Interaction (MRI). The quality of experience of these services will be enhanced in terms of for example: spatial connectedness, by providing shared spaces and supporting spatial features such as eye contact;social connectedness, by using natural means for interaction suiting different settings and activities;and information connectedness, by providing better means to share, manipulate and use information suiting different task or activities. In this paper we will discuss the background of this work and give an overview of our planned future work in COMPEIT. © 2013 ACM.
