Neutrino telescopes have been proposed as efficient tools for indirect dark matter searches, especially using the Sun as source for its good capability to capture dark matter and since we do not expect high-energy neutrinos from it. However, the last statement should be taken with caution because high-energy neutrinos may come from cosmic particle interactions in the atmosphere of the Sun and producing neutrinos. In this work, we describe an analysis of the ANTARES neutrino telescope optimised for the observation of neutrinos coming from the atmosphere of the Sun due to cosmic particles interactions. Focusing in the 10 GeV - 10 TeV energy range and using 2007-2012 data, the sensitivity obtained for the flux is approximately 1012 km-2 y-1, whereas the expected flux is two order of magnitudes below. From this, we can conclude that present high-energy neutrino telescopes dark matter searches in the Sun can indeed neglect this contribution, but could play a role in future detectors with better neutrino flux sensitivities in the 10 GeV - 10 TeV energy range and very good angular resolution. This paper compares the use of RGB and HSV histograms during the execution of an Evolutionary Algorithm. This algorithm generates abstract images that try to match the histograms of a target image. Three different fitness functions have been used to compare: the differences between the individual with the RGB histogram of the test image, the HSV histogram, and an average of the two histograms at the same time. Results show that the HSV fitness also increases the similarities of the RGB (and therefore, the average) more than the other two measures.

Distributed networked sensor systems have a potential applicability for developing a slope disaster monitoring system. A low energy consumption property and an eventual long running life are an important issue in this type of outdoor application. This paper proposes a probabilistic strategy to turn on/off each sensor node that could reduce an entire amount of consuming energy over the network. Effectiveness of the proposed probability assignment strategy is evaluated through numerical experiments, and convergence property is also investigated. Copyright © 2013 IFAC.

The paradigm of virtual world environment arises as an useful tool in diverse fields such as e-Health or education, where they provide a new way of communication and interaction with end users. Networking capabilities play an important role in these systems, which motivates the study and understanding of the gaming network traffic. The present work focuses on Open Wonderland, a system that provides the basis for the development of Networked Virtual Environments with educational or health purposes. The goal of this paper is defining a testing environment and modelling the behaviour of the outgoing network traffic at the server side.

Modeling the human brain as a network has been widely considered as a powerful approach to investigating the brain's structural and functional systems. However, many previous approaches focused on a single scale of brain network and the multi-scale nature of brain networks has been rarely explored yet. This paper put forward a novel framework to construct multi-scale common networks of brains via multi-scale spectral clustering of fiber connections among DICCCOLs. Specifically, the recently developed and publicly released DICCCOLs provide the nodal structural and functional correspondence across individuals, and thus the employed multi-scale spectral clustering algorithm divided the DICCCOL landmarks and their connections into sub-networks with correspondences on multiple scales. Experimental results showed the promise of the constructed multi-scale networks in applications of structural and functional connectivity mapping. As an application example, these multi-scale networks are used to guide the identification of multi-scale common fiber bundles across individuals and to facilitate the bundle's functional role analysis, which could enable other tract-based and network-based analyses in the future. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Web-based technologies are often built to capitalize on the flexibility and fluidity that is supported by the internet, with the value of 'access anywhere'underpinning a blurring of boundaries across home and work. Yet the home is well known in HCI to have a unique set of qualities that can usefully be drawn upon when designing to support domestic life. In this paper we ask what it means to design domestic web-connected technologies, placing the aesthetic and material properties intrinsic to the home and home life at the centre of our design exploration. We present three concepts that were selected and prototyped from a broader process of research-through-design: Tokens of Search provides tangible handles to web resources;Hole in Space connects the home intimately to a remote place;and Manhattan enables the tangible exploration of events in the community, putting the home at the centre. Discussions in the paper consider not only how aesthetics is articulated in the material and digital properties of the artefacts, but also how a consideration of the properties of the home can create a potentially new design space to explore. As the penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems on building rooftops increases, the accumulated effects of the rooftop PV output fluctuation on the electric utility are no longer negligible. Energy storage systems have been used to smooth PV power, especially when the building load becomes low. Commercial buildings are increasingly expected to charge or discharge plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which can be regarded as distributed energy storage. This paper presents an alternative power system for commercial buildings, which compensates for rooftop PV power fluctuation by charging or discharging PHEV batteries, and moreover, participates in tracking frequency regulation signals. The proposed system is designed and implemented using steady-state and dynamic models of power converters and controllers. Simulation studies performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK verify that the objective can be achieved under various conditions, determined by such factors as the maximum voltage, minimum state-of-charge, and desired PHEV charging end-time.

Most of the parameters proposed for the characterization of the emotion in speech concentrate their attention on phonetic and prosodic features. Our approach goes beyond by trying to relate the biometrical signature of voice with a possible neural activity that might generate voice production. The present study affords emotional differentiation in speech from the behavior of the biomechanical stiffness and cyclicality estimates, indicators of tremor. The emotion under study is the stress produced when a speaker has to defend an idea opposite to his/her thoughts or feelings and compared when his/her speech is self-consistent. The results presented show that females tend to relax vocal folds and decrease tremor and males tend to show the opposite behavior. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

There are some problems in researches on supply chain control of pharmaceutical chain enterprises under dynamic environment. The authors establish a new paradigm of computer simulation analysis and adaptive control, the core strategies of which are data-driven and agent's computing. The paper constructs a feedback closed-loop cycle mode that is data collection and processing, data-driven mode discovery and performance identification, data-driven control output. Then an adaptive dynamic control strategy is established based on active induction and emergency intervention control. Contents of the new strategy include: supply chain modeling of pharmaceutical chain enterprises based on CAS, adaptive control paradigm of supply chain in pharmaceutical chain enterprises, program design of control and system behavior assessment based on epsilon machine. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Information technology (IT) supports companies' business processes and decision making through the use of technologies and tools that are provided by suppliers. Companies that are suppliers and consumers establish relationships through contracts of purchasing products and consulting, for example. These relationships, i.e., the companies involved and the information exchanged between the parties are considered elements of Software Ecosystems (SECOs). All of these elements can be considered SECO assets and need to be supported via SECO governance since their organization and evolution represent an IT architecture. So, IT companies or their IT divisions can use the ISO/IEC 19770 standard for Software Asset Management (SAM) in order to control costs and optimize software investments. In this sense, this paper describes a SECO Governance approach for enabling an IT architecture based on SAM. © 2013 IEEE.
